FILM RECOMMENDATIONS

Postby S2M » Sun Aug 01, 2010 5:27 am

Watched a bunch of movies this week, and wish to recommend a few choice titles..

I'm BIG into Japanese and Chinese period pieces, especially epic war movies involving martial arts...and I watch these in their intended language...Mandarin, while sub-titled in English...

The Warlords - Jet Li film set in the 1800s...awesome!

Red Cliff 1 & 2 - EPIC Chinese war movie set in 208 A.D.

The Runaways - story of the all girl rock group from the mid-late 70s...Lita Ford, Joan Jett, Cherie Currie...etc. Didn't particularly enjoy this movie...it felt disjointed and rushed. Focusing on drug use and sexual experimentation....3 out of 10

Clash of the Titans - sub-par remake of the Harry Hamlin, Lawrence Olivier movie from 1981. Visually stunning, yet 30 minutes shorter than the original...Neeson failed to save this movie...5 out of 10

The Losers - or as I like to call it, the A-Team redux. Mindless movie about left to die soldiers who seek revenge on the CIA...only saving grace is Zoe Saldana...damn she's hot....so if you like your movies sans intelligent, well thought out plot lines....this movie is for you....the 'real' Losers.....4 out of 10

Cop Out - basically a more comedic Hollywood Homicide...Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan make this film...Morgan is comic genius. I laughed my ass off the whole time...nothing earth shattering, but gut busting funny....9 out 10

Brooklyn's Finest - Best cop movie I've seen since forever. Gere, Cheadle, and Hawke are stunning in this movie from the people who brought you Training Day. 10/10

Repo Men - starring Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, and Liev Schrieber....futuristic movie about artifical organs being financed from a company called The Union...and if you are past due on your replacement liver...on the 96th day they send the Repo Men to reclaim it....awesome premise...falls short in execution...I have another movie called, REPO: THE Genetic Opera...that came out first. Dealing with the same plot. Still gotta watch that. 7/10

Operation: Endgame - decent assassin movie pitting TWO 5 man assassin teams against each other. Jeffrey Tambor, Ellen Barkin, and Ving Rhames star...I don't know what it is but I find Ellen Barkin highly attractive...ever since Ocean's 13....8.5/10

....to be continued

Saw this a week ago too, and agree totally. Made-for-TV quality, and definitely seemed rushed. Barely showcased any of their music, either.

I almost picked this up on Blu-Ray yesterday, then talked myself out of spending the $20 to put it in my Netflix queue. Glad I did. I'll still watch it, but don't expect much.

Glad he's still laughing since he's now found himself in the Nicholas Cage School of Financial Success.

I appreciated it more after watching the documentaries. Definitely not formulaic.

Ellen Barkin has always looked sleazy to me, just like Kirstie Alley. Except now she's old and sleazy. I just got thru watching RAMBO Extended Cut for the 2nd time (probably 4th considering all the rewinding/rewatching I did), and Julie Benz is hot even when she's covered with blood and mud. She's almost as sexy as Diane Lane.

Nope. I almost never watch movies, but did recently and may have posted about it. But if you haven't seen "From Paris With Love", that is a must see. One of John Travolta's best performances.

hmmm...I need to track this one down. I've seen most of his films, but somehow missed this one. How far back does it date?

Everybody seems to love the full version, but haven't been able to find anything other than the short cut around here. Must get around to ordering it, I guess. Seems like John Woo is back, now that he doesn't have to deal with Hollywood.

The Russell Crowe Robin Hood flick surprised the hell out of me. Despite the bad press, this was a great old school summer blockbuster.

lol ... I still haven't seen any of The Godfather series, Scarface any of The Lord Of The Rings series or any of the Harry Potter movies. Furthermore, I don't watch those marvel comic cartoon movies (Iron Man, Transformers, Batman, etc.). All boring bullshit to me. I'm too fucking immersed in Investigation ID, Forensic Files, 48 Hours, Snapped, City Confidential and shows of the like. :)

Yea, the strange thing is, the post-release reaction was so uniformly hostile across the board. From the geeky online film websites to mainstream publications, nearly everyone panned it. Almost makes you think Hollywood and the press has turned against Crowe for being a prick in interviews. The director, Ridley Scott, apparently viewed the film as a quasi unofficial follow-up to Gladiator. While I wouldn't go that far, it's got some of that same magic. Looking forward to the dvd.

Addiction to "Snapped" is one of the reasons I don't up my life insurance policy. I don't want anyone making an obscene profit from my untimely death.

I hated Clash of the Titans! I never saw the original but I was a Classics major in college and it really bothered me how they made some changes to the myth that didn't make it any better. That and whatshisface acted and looked no different than he did in Avatar.

Recently, I liked How To Train Your Dragon and The Karate Kid remake... Inception was okay, mostly overhyped...

It's definitely entertaining and for a "reimagining" it pays plenty of homage (too much probably) to the original, but none of the new characters comes close to having the charm or venom of the originals -- not a single one. That is the film's #1 flaw.

I thought Inception was great, very well done. How to train your dragon is really entertaining too, if you don't mind being seen in a "kids" movie, you will enjoy it.
