It was the byproduct of a hazing ritual from his team mates.

He just needs to have it touched up a bit and shortened. I think it's a cool new look. :)

I get the hazing part, but he ain't pledging a fraternity, and his membership on the team didn't hinge on him him going along with any of it. Sure, let them have fun but what kept him from shaving it all off before appearing that way in public? The only answer I can come up with is that he knew it would draw attention and gets people talking, just like Jessica Simpson saying she never brushes her teeth, but just swishes Listerine around in her mouth. Stupid controversy is all that keeps Lindsay Lohan in the headlines, too.

Rip, this is common with every team, every year, in the NFL. Players have to carry other players' equipment, they're often made to wear dresses and other women's clothing, and even duct taped to the goal posts. He's not doing this for attention. Believe me, I would have been the first one to jump on his ass if I thought so!

PS I think there's a "waiting period" on him shaving his head to get it back to normal.

So what happens if he doesn't go along? Social alienation?

Pretty much. And a lot of lost respect too. This happens in all 4 major sports, especially baseball and football.

It's hazing. It is a rookie tradition to get hazed and is just how teammates interact with a young guy or a rookie. Look at the attraction Dez Bryant got for not carrying Roy William's shoulder pads. People went nuts simply because it's tradition to haze rookies, all out in fun of becoming a closer team amongst teammates, esp the veterans.

Hazing happens at any level, starting in highschool. The best are the stories about how rookies have to sing a song in front of the whole team during lunch or dinner time. Last year for the Steelers, some of the rookies had to put on skits of veteran teammates. One did one of kicker Jeff Reed beating up a paper towel dispenser. They said it was a major laugh and hit for the team.
