In the wake of the Reggie Bush scandal....

Postby S2M » Thu Sep 23, 2010 2:21 am

....here's something else to ponder. All you UCLA fans that love John Wooden, better think again. I wanted to post this a week ago...but somehow forgot. I'm a DUKE fan, and Coach K fanatic. And I always hear how The Wizard of Westwood is the gold standard by which college coaches are compared. BUZZZZ. WRONG! I'd have to say that with his tarnished 11 titles, and his 88 game win streak he may look like the standard, and due to his general goodguy nature his seedy side gets overlooked....To me, Adolf Rupp, and Coach K are the gold standard. Neither universtiy has been on probation, and no sanctions have been levied against either....however, there is a deep dark secret within Bruin history....his name is Sam Gilbert - a UCLA booster who financed those 11 titles...ever wonder why not ONE player, no matter how poor, needy...ever left UCLA early for that NBA money? Well the answer is that Gilbert was paying these boys to stay and play....and Wooden knew about this and looked the other way. In the late 70s, AFTER Wooden retired, the L.A. Times did an investigation of Gilbert. The NCAA levied sanctions against UCLA, but no championships were vacated...Imagine that? Selective enforcement.

“If the UCLA teams of the late 1960s and early 1970s were subjected to the kind of scrutiny (other schools) have been, UCLA would probably have to forfeit about eight national championships and be on probation for the next 100 years. - Bill Walton"

If schools back then were held to the same scrutiny that colleges and universities are today, John Wooden would be a footnote.

you cant compare era's no matter what you think... and its unfare to go back to the mid sixties and have sour grapes...lets face it the talent level in basketball at that time was SOOO DIFFERENT and what the NCAA was about back then... is sooo different than what it is today... in the late 60s and early 70s... TV wasnt so much an influence yet... and coaches were getting paid squat...

and to say it again... YOU CANT COMPARE ERAS.. ever... COACH K is up there in todays godl standard... but leave Wooden out of it...

You CAN compare eras because the whole point is Wooden cheated...a little payola happened, and he looked the other way. There is no 'eras' in cheating. No kids ever left early for the NBA from UCLA, no matter how poor and needy they were. Why leave when you are getting paid?

And what does sour grapes have to do with it? Seriously, you live in a sexy state, wise up!
