The Royal Engagement Ring

Postby SteveForever » Wed Nov 17, 2010 1:16 pm

I was freaked out while watching the news when they showed Kate wearing Diana's ring...I'm sorry but I think its super weird to wear that ring.
Does anyone else see that as creepy? :?:

Nope...it's a fitting tribute from a son to his mother, and an expression of love for his betrothed.

I though it was great.

Here is the interview about how he proposed:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookou ... ton-to-wed

He said this, "It was my way of making sure that my mother didn't miss out on today," he said. William's mother, Princess Diana, was killed in a 1997 car crash.

I thought it was really cool he put it that way.

At first, I thought bad omen because of how bad their marriage was. But then I looked at it more that it was the one thing he wanted of his mother's when she died and she would have been so happy for them and the significance of why he wanted to give her the ring was moving. It's such a beautiful ring and historical, too.

He loves his mother very much. I thought it was a lovely gesture.

Creepy. Diana was the most beloved of the Royal Family and probably still is. I think Kate is already going to be carrying a huge burden of comparison and that iconic ring won't help. I get that it's his mom's, but she wasn't just any mom.

After the Queen dies, the monarchy is in for a total revamp as far as its postion as a relevant entity in both political and social circles.

Diana is way overrated as far as contributing anything of lasting value to the British Empire or its subjects during her time with the royals.

Her ring perhaps can be thought of as a tangible bond to be passed on to her son's future spouse. Nothing more, nothing less as far as the gift's impact on anything of a greater nature concerning the kingdom.

Not at all; it's a way of keeping his mother close, keeping her a part of his life.

I have, and wear, both my parent's wedding rings. They split up when I was 6 months old, divorced when I was four. My mother gave me hers on my 18th birthday, and I asked my dad for his for my 21st. Wearing them is a way of keeping them in my heart and my life, and is a tangible reminder that they did care for each other once. I have no doubt that Prince William sees the engagement ring in the same way; no matter how sour his parents relationship went, there was a period when they loved and cared for each other, and they shared their love of their sons. The ring is physical reminder of that, and now he's giving that reminder to the woman he wants to be the mother of his own children.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

I think it's fine he gave it to her. I know a lot of people who have engagement rings from previous family members passed down, and if it means something special to the couple, that's all that should matter.

I heard on the news this morning during talk about this that the ring wasn't an original anyhow, for some reason I always thought it was. Apparently when Charles and Diana got engaged, he told her to pick out a ring after the fact, and she chose that one from a collection. They didn't say how many rings just like that were made though.

I get the sentiment,

and I get that by giving her this ring it appeases all the people who would have got on his case if he had spent thousands of pounds on a new one while the UK is in financial meltdown,

but for me,

I think he should have bought her a new engagement ring specially designed for her and should have given her a different piece of his Mother's jewellery as a gesture.

Purely because I think an engagement ring should look good on a woman's hand. I don't think that ring suits her.
Just sayin'.

Just what I need to listen to on a daily basis...two British fucks getting married! Who gives a shit. I always hear this mindless shit on the news about "America's fascination with the Royal Family". Says who? I could give a fuck about these rich dopes and care even less about who they're bending over and giving the business to! Here's hoping she gets caught getting gang-banged in a bar and the wedding gets called off  I'm not sure I can listen to this shit for the next 9 months. This "British Royal Family" reminds me a whole lot of Paris Hilton...they're famous for absolutely no apparent reason!
