The diehards seem to love it, which is an amazing feet since I've never seen a fanbase with more differing opinions on how to rate the back catalog than Magnum fans. Never seen a band that deviated style so much from album to album either. Be interested to see the wombat's thoughts on this one.

well, I'm impressed, and I think he nailed it. I think All My Bridges was the first real old-school Magnum song since the reunion, but they have certainly upped the game a bit this time around. One of the most original bands out there (and that's very hard to do these days!), and I only wish I could see them live. Bob Catley is simply one of the most consistent and finest singers out there.

Rob's another one that I like his delivery. Whether it's a rocker or ballad, he always throws the song down with passion or emotion.

Supposedly this year, a new MB20 album will be recorded. Rob Thomas is interesting as having a very average vocal range and a VERY unique style of delivery to the point that he is instantly identifiable. The last solo album was pretty much Rob Thomas doing his self-proclaimed 80s album and turning into the new Phil Collins, but I see nothing wrong with that at all.

I think he is sabotaging himself in the long run by doing both solo and MB20 as opposed to building one into a live act that can draw large numbers of people --> you make more money playing to 25,000 people than to 5k (solo) or 10-12k (MB20).

Very good songwriter, and having a bit of the MB20 rock will be nice to hear again.

Judging only from the audience this music will attract, I predict that bolded band will be the beer/pee break

I would venture to say that, considering the above-mentioned bands, there are probably several bands listed there that are either as popular or less so than Mr. Big.

No offence Lynn, but Gwar? Avenged 7Fold? Garbage. Hell, ALL of these bands are garbage/shit/vomit. Mr. Big is too, but why are they playing this festival? I would pay to see the audiences faces when they break into "To Be With You." I am sure the crowd will just eat that song up.

For the love of God, isn't there a Rock n Roll festival that isn't metal on one side or Air Suppliest on the other? You know, middle of the road? Jesus...

My point was they will attract a younger audience. And many have heavier music. I'm picturing an audience demographic. Not saying I think Mr. Big is bad or the others are good

Add The Cult to those 3 you bolded and that's about the only 4 I'd want to see off that list. And possibly Alice Cooper?

And Dean, their new cd is very heavy, nothing accoustic or comparable on it to TBWY.

Heavier than any cd Journey has ever done, for that matter. Very modern with heavy guitars/bass, and if you replace Eric Martin for a less melodically-inclined vocally, it's not far off from a lot of current modern rock bands. I see why a lot of people love it, but give me Magnum any day ;)

I like Alter Bridge, though I like the first 2 albums way better than their latest. Even they seem a little out of place among that list too..

I get where you're coming from, I like all their albums including this heavier one, but saying that.....I was just listening to American Beauty, and it's quite heavy and fast, and kind of sung in almost upper range. And as much as I like that one, I hope they don't add it to the setlist as a constant. It is very fast and choppy and there is no way he can sing that one with any kind of soul/delivery. I could see that one tearing his killer pipes apart trying to do that one night after night. Grrr, can't be doing that, I'm going to want some more soulful solo stuff after Mr Big.

Going to have to have a listen to some Magnum, I don't think I've ever heard anything of theirs that I recall anyway. First time I even heard of Bob Cately is when he and JSS joined EM on stage for a singalong to To Be With You at the Gods 2002 (have an audio boot of Eric's Gods 2002 set). Some great bands on that Gods bill, one show I'd love to have seen.

ahh yes, that would be the song with JSS and Bob where JSS's mic was apparently turned off as you can't hear one word from him.

I wouldn't be surprised if you never heard Magnum as they never really broke out outside of the UK. They tend to operate in the same musical vicinity as Phil Collins-era Genesis, but don't sound like them, and Bob Catley certainly didn't have Phil's popularity as a solo artist to bring fans to the band. Some variation of pomp and progressive rock, with some more mainsteam commercial hard rock and aor thrown in there in the later albums.

Hard to pick a starting point because of how different each album was compared to the previous one. In Journey terms, think of the switch in musical style from Frontiers to Raised on Radio....and do that change on EVERY album for 30 years. It's both a blessing and a curse.

Not sure what the best compilation album is, but the only album that almost all the fans agree on being very good is On a Storyteller's Night. The production isn't the best, but it may be the best set of songs in one album that they have done. Just be prepared for a very British-sounding band, and not commercial American rock....for the most part. It's a very original sound that is either one the best bands you've heard....or something totally average that you have no interest in ever hearing again. There is no such thing as the "casual Magnum fan".

as one of the least favorite songs on the album, if they NEVER played it live, it wouldn't bother me at all! Doesn't do a thing for me. Probably hard to do soulfully, but it's fairly low-pitched for him, so I doubt it would be that difficult on the voice.

Maybe that's what it is, it's just not his usual delivery, I like the song but not my favorite vocal (if that's possible  ) on the album. All The Way Up, I Get The Feeling and Kill Me With A Kiss are more of my fave vocals on it. I give the guy major kudos for singing straight up live on this studio album over those 2 powerhouses, at 50 yet!

I missed this. By far the one band that doesn't fit in here is Gaslight Anthem. These guys are not hard rock at all. Put it this way, they are much like the E Street Band. The lead singer, Brian is awesome. A very clean cut, straight ahead popping rock band if you will.

Oh and Deb, aside from Gaslight Anthem, of that list, as shitty as it is, I would go see Mr. Big before any of those bands.

Kgdjpubs(fuck, can't you get an easier name to say? I hate typing out your avatar name!), you say this as if i think Journey is heavy. Journey has never put out a heavy record save for Evolution. I am on record as saying Journey aren't even a rock band. I consider them a choppy pop band with a dusting of rock mixed in, but definitely not a true rock band, and that's ok too, not a sin. I am sure Mr. Big would rock Journey's asses into the ground, and I would take Martin's vox over Pineda's anyday too.

use Kevin....everybody else does. Asked about changing name to that (which is what I use on the main board, but it was taken here) and was suggested to wait for new board.

There's probably some amount of truth in that, but the line between rock and pop is pretty blurry. I'd generally call Journey rock....but not hard rock by any form. And no, there isn't any issue with them not being a hard rock band.
