"One Born Every Minute"

Postby Angel » Fri Mar 04, 2011 6:09 am

Has anyone watched this show on Lifetime? I have watched two partial episodes and had to turn it off!

Sorry B, SJ and others but yes, I'm about to get on my midwife box....don't read further if you're just going to bash me for it.

Every woman that said she wanted to have an unmedicated birth was treated like a freak. It's sad that women have to write out two and three page birth plans just to get what they want. Women that were screaming during the delivery were made fun of, they were told things like "Stop screaming, it's time to act like a mother." I wanted to strangle the nurses and literally had to turn it off-it just makes me SO mad that this is how the media portrays birth! If women want an epidural, let them have one, that's fine, it's their body, their choice. By the same token if they don't want one, that's their choice too. I also hate how the doctors and nurses take all the credit. It's the mama giving birth that is amazing, not the nurse!!!

OK, discuss.....if you so desire!

I just glad I'm not the one who has to do it.

I have watched three or four episodes of it. I like it. I don't pay no mind to the nurses. What I am watching it for are for the couples who are having a child. What they do and what they talk about while the mother is in labor... then delivery, then to see them after the baby is born.

My first child decided to stop in the birth canal. The top of her head was peeking out. The nurses rushed her father out of the delivery room, told me to sit up and bend over, since they were going to give me a shot in the spine, so the doctor could use forceps to deliver her. They did let daddy back in to watch the delivery and cut the cord.

When my son was due to arrive... I was again in labor at home. (this was early labor) I called in and let them know that I had started contractions. I timed them, then told the nurse. She suggested a warm shower and a mild mixed drink or wine to calm my nerves. Later, when the contractions really started to hit, we went down to Kaiser and checked in. My son was a big baby, so I was complaining of pain. I asked for some pain meds to take the edge off, but since I had a mixed drink (very mild mixed drink), the nurse said I couldn't have any pain meds, since they didn't know how much I drank! My son's birth weight was 9 pounds and 3/4 ounces, and I had to have him naturally! He did some damage to me during the birth! What I can't understand is why the advice nurse told me to have a mild mixed drink or wine in the first place to calm my nerves!

There are some nurses out there that just rub people the wrong way. And not every nurse treats their patients like freaks. Nurses are there to monitor vital signs and take care of the patient. And they should make sure that they mother has the type of birth she wants.

Number three, and the last child. I was lucky that I was in a teaching hospital, and they asked me how I wanted the birth to proceed. I could have my daughter naturally without pain meds. Get one shot of pain meds, or go epidural! Whatever my choice was, they didn't give me any grief over it. The nurses were wonderful, helping me give birth, since the father wasn't there, and he didn't want to take any birthing/coaching classes.

I don't know where this hospital is, but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone if they treat patients like freaks just because they want to have the type of birth they want.

MG, are you talking about the black woman who was soon to be grandma? I agree, she was a hoot!

Actually, I think homebirth is a safe option as long as mama is screened properly meaning she has no complications, she lives close enough to get to a hosptial within 15 minutes if complications come up etc. The unassisted birth makes me a little nervous but it's a woman's choice and if they educate themselves about birth that makes it a little safer. As far as leaving the placenta attached (which is called a "lotus birth" I believe)...that's kinda weird but to each his own-some cultures eat the placenta.

I'm glad they had a good experience!!

Angel, I know what you mean about doctors making you feel ashamed for yelling when it hurt so bad. As I have said before, I had my first and second natural. And the doctor for Rose tried to make me feel bad because the back labor was so bad I felt I was being electrocuted through all my nerve endings!   It was the worst pain of my life! She said, "Hush, you'll bother all the other mothers, they are showing how brave they are." I wanted to grab her bottom lip and pull it over her head. See if she yells! LOL!

She also left Me and Rose, with Rose having a chord wrapped around her neck and did not "bother" to try and save her. It was my Lamaze teacher and nurse who stayed by my side even after her shift, comforted me, and put her fingers up inside me and gave Rose's head a twist. She was just trying something on a whim..........Rose spun, and the chord came free and saved her.
