'Celeb Rehab' Rocker Mike Starr Dead

3/8/2011 2:58 PM PST by TMZ Staff

Former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr died in Utah ... TMZ has learned.

Mike Starr

Starr appeared on the third season of "Celebrity Rehab" back in 2009 -- and was arrested last month for felony possession of a controlled substance. Salt Lake City cops say he had 6 Xanax pills and 6 Opana (painkiller) pills when he was busted.

Starr was 44 years old.

Mike's dad tells TMZ, "It's a terrible shock and tragedy."

UPDATE: Police tell us Starr's body was found in a Salt Lake City home today. Cops say they were called to the house at 1:42PM.

Story developing...

I never heard of this band.

Xanax is a garbage drug that people abuse and I've seen it cause paranoia and the inability to cope in social situations without. People need to face their fears, not suppress them. This drug leads down the road to fucking nowhere.

He just made a cameo on this past season's "Celebrity Rehab" as one of their success stories, brought in to encourage the new cast. Sad to hear.

i've admitted here that i take vicodin for a back injury i suffered years ago but its the only drug i take.i have a lot of issues with sleep and even anxiety but i refuse to take xanax or even ativan and a lot of that is due to my addictive personality.i quit smoking, drinking and all drugs about 12 years ago and i could've easily went back down that road but i haven't.i know someone who takes 120 or more xanax a month and thats mainly to sleep at night.when they run out they go through hell.

Cue the fuckin pity party. When are people going to stop self-medicating and face the pressures of life with good old-fashioned human resiliency and perseverance?

I thought he was doing ok...guess not. I never take anything cause of stuff like this. I always have had trouble sleeping all my life, but I do not trust any medication for it. Been depressed too, but I pull out of it on my own.

Was just about to type pretty much the same sentence. Seemed like he had beat his addiction. :( Recall Layne Stayley's (sp) mom being on the program and pleading to him to work Drew's program and not end up like her son (his addiction killed him). Very sad.

Ya, sad. Was watching that Celebrity rehab and Drew Pinsky seems to really care for those quiet ones struggling with it. Mike last season and Leif Garrett this season.

Yeah I saw an episode one night not too long ago with Eric Roberts on it too, just sad to see.

Very serious, verslibre. I am kind of stuck in the 60's, 70's and 80's Classic Rock music!

Yeah, but still. It's been kind of hard to miss them these last twenty or so years.

Are you familiar with Hurl Jam and Nirwanka, I mean Pearl Jam and Nirvana? Soundgarden?

i'm not big on grunge at all but Alice In Chains is one band i really liked.they have the most haunting but beautiful sound yet it was melodic enough to me that i liked it.there was more than just noise there like with a lot of the bands from that movement.

here is a sample clasicrockldy of some Alice In Chains....

I totally agree with you on this one. I've never seen anyone use Xanax for anything except to get high, or zone out and not deal with life. It always makes the symptoms worse once it sinks its hooks in.
