In the case of religion, brainwashing or an uneducated guess. Take your pick.

This implies that God, the one you believe in, is narcissistic and needy, and needs to be worshiped and praised. Seems dumb to me. I think the "true path," if such a thing exists, involves living a life full of caring, sharing, family, justice and a moral code defined by one's self ... not some archaic book of bullshit with the vaguest of generalities.

No thanks. I'd rather be guided by decision making based on what I believe to simply be the right thing to do. Seems to me that if God didn't want murder, rape, war and other forms of chaos he'd do something about it. But I see no evidence of that, so I'm going to speculate that he condones it, doesn't exist, is completely indifferent or wants us to make our own decisions.

And the Koran says something and so do books of all of the
other religions. You only believe what you do because that's what you've been exposed to ... just like them. Most "religious" people have it in their makeup to have to have everything make sense and have an urge to belong, and the "God" issue is one of life's toughest question ... and most manipulated. But if you switch out geography, I'm quite sure that Christians would be running around holding the Koran and praying several times a day and the Muslims would be in Church on Sunday listening to readings by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Call it indoctrination, brainwashing or anything else, but please don't call it faith. Faith, in this sense, is grounded in love, and that's something reserved for a parent, child, friend or spouse.
Real events, actual
shared moments and a bond that is
real. Not some prehistoric book of generalities based on nothing. The bible, at times, is a pretty good guide on how to live your life, but mostly it is nothing more than what most people would consider common sense generalities, sprinkled with a lot of fear tactics and bullshit. Just like the Koran. I say fuck them both and live your life based on simple universal truths like love, generosity, justice, compassion, kindness and family. And I don't need a book to tell me that.
