Stage Collapses During Cheap Trick Concert (Video)

5:20 AM 7/18/2011 by THR staff

Gale force winds knocked down a stories tall structure 20 minutes into the band's set at Ottawa Bluesfest.

A thunderstorm with gale force winds caused a stage to sway backwards and collapse at this weekend’s Ottawa Bluesfest while the band Cheap Trick was playing.

Described as several stories tall, the steel structure shook momentarily then fell to the ground at around 7:20 p.m. on Sunday, July 17 as the iconic rock band was 20 minutes into its set. “It was pretty freaky," one concertgoer told Canadian Television.

Members of Cheap Trick escaped uninjured, but one man on stage was taken to hospital after an object pierced his abdomen. He also suffered a fractured leg and pelvis and was reported to be in serious condition.

Cheap Trick frontman Robin Zander later wrote on the band’s Facebook page, “Fortunately the band and crew are all lucky to be alive and we'll see you down the road. And all the best to our truck driver Sandy." Cheap Trick next plays Lewiston, New York's Artpark on Tuesday.

The festival, which was ending its 12-night run on Sunday (Soundgarden, A Perfect Circle, The Black Keys and Jane’s Addiction were among the headlining acts), canceled all subsequent performances. The storm caused power outages throughout area.

See video of the collapsing stage in the ABC News report below and check out photos posted by guitarist Rick Nielsen at Cheap Trick’s official site

Surprised more people haven't commented on that stage collapse. It's a total "holy shit" kind of moment.

I just now watched the video though I heard about it on the news this morning before I left for work. I think I heard that one person was seriously injured but no one was killed.

Wow!!
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

TheOldAR may post somewhere, someday. He misses it. He has some great posting ideas. His hip hurts though, but he can still post. It's just raspy.

Damn! The video is no longer available.... But still, that had to be terrifying for everyone on and around the stage and its rigging. Anyone who has worked as a roadie/stage hand/etc. knows that shit is HEAVY and when it starts movin' & shakin' it's time to head for safer terrain! Glad no-one was killed.
