General Intelligent Discussion & One Thread About That Buttknuckle

No evidence yet of suicide. There were a lot of texts between musicians here in LA on Thursday. I heard he's been doing a lot of living and boozing in hotels. This might just be an accident. Im erasing my previous post. It's sad bands like Winger, Whitesnake and Warrant get a bad rap. It's the videos that spoiled their images.

Blind Faith, brilliant ballad just like Let It Rain.

He always seemed to have a great sense of humor too. Always got a huge laugh out of Ode To Tipper Gore, lol.

IMO, there's no ballad like Let it Rain, maybe I Saw Red comes close...

Yeah I like I Saw Red, but Let It Rain is more of a fav for me.

"Blind Faith" is a hell of a song, too.

Agreed, that's why I mentioned it as just as much a favorite as Let It Rain. He was definitely a talented songwriter/musician.

Never saw this before, it's great.

I remember when I saw them live thinking he was one big dude. Had to be over 6 ft, and had an arm span like an airliner. Just a great stage presence.

Last time that I saw Warrant (1997 at Birch Hill in Old Bridge, NJ -- I miss that venue!) my friend and I got to meet him after the show and I do remember him being really tall. I'm not a short woman (5' 7") by any means, but I remember him having to lean down a little when we were talking. I had him sign my DRFSR, Cherry Pie, and Dog Eat Dog CD inserts, and I remember him scolding me a bit for not having Ultraphobic and Belly to Belly with me saying, "What happened? You stopped???" I apologized for not having gotten them yet and admitted that BTB really wasn't my thing. I think I picked up Ultraphobic shortly after.

I *so* wish that there was video out there of the first time that I saw them at Birch Hill, when he did "Bohemian Rhapsody," accompanied only by his keyboard player and it was... simply stunning! I wish there were digital cameras back then, because that whole show was just an incredible performance. During the show he walked among the audience singing and shaking hands/high-fiving everyone and ended up with one of the large bars as his stage. He was *so* on top of his game back then. 8)

He was tall. I'm 6 4 and he was maybe a little bit shorter than me or around the same height so he was at least 6 feet tall. When the Doors had their 40th anniversary night on Sunset strip in Hollywood Nov 8, 2006, I was looking for some friends at the Rainbow and Janie was standing outside and I walked right by him. I regret now not saying hi to him

That's cool you got to meet and talk with him 8) . I wish I could have seen him live more than once, but just thankful to have gotten to see that one show. I still like Warrant, like the new album and Mason's a good vocalist, but Jani was one of a kind for sure.

This news really made me sad when I heard about it. I can remember getting into Warrant right when their first disc came out-a buddy of mine in HS played guitar and he'd always be working on songs from DRFSR. I did not get to see them live in their heyday, or with all 5 original guys together, but everytime I saw them Jani kicked ass. He was outstanding solo as well. When he toured with DuBrow and Adler, a buddy of mine, his g/f & me drove Jani to the gig from the Red Roof Inn in Lemont, IL to Nelly's Piper (I think it was called at the time). I'll never forget knocking on his hotel door like "hey, dude, your ride's here." He chatted and signed stuff in the car, and then had us on the bus. He commented on my Darkness shirt saying he really loved that band. My favortie show might have been on Metal in America, though, right when he came off Fit Club. He sounded great, rocked the house and was cool after the show. I'd put Uncle Tom's Cabin in my Top 50 of all time for sure. I had a feeling things were never going to work out with all the original guys over the last couple of years, but I figured he'd do some solo records and tours. He'll definitely be missed. One hell of a talent gone too soon.

Did you ever hear "Back Down To One?" I have it, but have probably only played it all the way thru a few times. Pretty good stuff, more modern sounding.

If i remember correctly and of course i might be wrong....Didn't Ode To Tipper Gore get taken off that album or was it an album bonus track? Back in the day i seem to remember that song wasn't on all pressings of Cherry Pie.

Definitely pick up Dog Eat Dog if your a Warrant fan and don't have it.Really a brilliant album that never got its due.

Tipper Gore was part of the reason we have "parental label warnings" on albums now, which was the whole point of the song. She is the one who launched the campaign for it in the government. So as some bands do, they made a "clean album" and an album with the warning label. Ode to Tipper Gore was on guess which one? I remember seeing a thing about these hearings on VH1, and the rockers realized that the warning labels kind of backfired on the government....because which albums do you think teens flocked to?

There were 2 versions of the Cherry Pie album, the one with "Ode" had a warning label of course. I remember seeing both.

And agreed, Dog Eat Dog is a great album.

Jani must've suffered from horrible bouts of depression probably got worse when he was drinking. Can't mix pills and booze and he being in the rock biz should've known that first hand.Doesn't matter much now but he probably was very lonely being away from family and not really knowing who you can trust among all the sharks out there on the road. His career never recovered after the grunge sound took over in the early 90's.In the span of a few years he did earn three or four million selling platinum albums and a couple smash hit singles so he did taste success although it was not sustained for a lengthy period. He had plenty to be proud of and very few musicians experience the success he was able to have even if it was in a brief time period.

I heard about that. What is wrong with people? It doesn't matter if you think he is dead or not. YOU CHECK!!! I touched my Mya knowing he had already passed. It is the right thing to do. It doesnt matter human, animal. You check because that could be you needing help. It is my understanding jANI was already long dead. Doesn't matter! People are too much concerned with their own comfort and less for the survival of humanity!!!!

(I know I will probably get flack for mentioned a dead cat in the same breath as as a dead human. I only make the comparison because it is my latest experience with death)

RIP JANI....

Dog Eat Dog is a fantastic album, my favorite from Warrant, but they were/are more than just an average hair band. Jani was one of my favorite songwriters.
