What is our society coming to?

Postby hoagiepete » Fri Sep 02, 2011 4:38 am

Another brawl involving kids sports. A kid tackles a ref. Coaches (plural), supposedly mentors of kids, attacks a ref. Check out the big dude trying to kick and stomp on the guy.

This is sick. I'm trying my hardest to not consider this a race issue, but it is damn tough after watching the video.

Parents, coaches and kids that do this need to be put away...for a long time. They do not belong in this society. Nip it in the bud. If kids are brought up this way, it will only get worse.

I was a full time girls' softball coach for 12 years ('96-'08) at both the recreational and tournament levels. Both are ASA Certified/Sanctioned positions. And while the tournament level of play is much more competitive, it was very rare that there was any kind of "episode" - and when there was, it was usually limited to a parent questioning the focal abilities of the umpires. At the Rec level however, participation is open to everyone who wants to play which leaves the door open to a lot of unacceptable behavior - nearly always by the parents and/or other adult spectators.

It nearly always starts the same way: One of the parents doesn't like the ump's call and continues to cat-call from the stands making an ass out of themselves as well as annoying the spectators for the other team. Team B is finally fed up with the mouth of the person from Team A's side and tells them to shut up. Then it goes back and forth until
A: One of the two decides to let it go
B: The ump ejects the parents for disruption of the game
C: It escalates until eventually there's a fight with supporters from both bleachers rushing to backup their side.

The fact that option C: even exists is a very sad commentary on what some people consider acceptable behavior.

Watching that video made me sick to my stomach. There is absolutely nothing the ref could have possible done which warrants being bum-rushed and tackled like that. And for that one guy to try and stomp on the ref's head,... well, I think we all recognize that kind of tactic and where someone learns to fight like that. People who are raised in an environment where resorting to violence is a viable "next step" in the natural progression of things will harbor that mentality and teach it to their kids because it's what they know.
And perhaps the saddest thing of all is if you had the opportunity to sit down with the individual(s) who threw the first punch and ask them why they did it, they would instinctively justify their actions and have no remorse or guilt whatsoever.

You're right. This kind of behavior shouldn't exist especially at the youth sports level. These parents/adults are failing their children.

Sometimes the hardest thing for these kinds of rabid fans to hear and accept is that at he end of the day when everyone has gone home and the field house has been locked up and the the only sounds coming from the once teeming park are the sounds of sprinklers clicking around, it's just a game.

Whether it's a McDonald's parking lot, the streets of LA after a perceived wrong verdict or a 13-14 year old football game, the thuggish mob-like behavior is exponentially more prevalent by the demographic in that video than any other.

Wow. I'm hoping he gets at least 5 years for that. That whole scene is wrong on so many levels that I'm not sure where to begin. First, it seems as though each child had a parent there for the fight, with neither having the fucking brains to back out. Second, this guy pummels a kid half his size, ignoring both the law and common decency. Pending an investigation into whether or not this was organized and condoned by the parents, I'd cite both parents and let them spend some time in jail, with the male doing a few years. That's just ridiculous.

True.

That football story reads like a "Monday/Dem" behavior manual, too.

I'd like to see the outcry, rage and protesting that would have occurred had the colors in that video been reversed. Could you imagine the elation of the race baiters like Sharpton and Jackson had that ref been black and those pummeling him white?

Also, I see where this guy isn't pressing charges, just like Reginald Denny. :? The local prosecutor better go after them on his/her own. That is just intolerable on so many levels.

I canNOT see them not....maybe that's why the dude held off, maybe they told him "we got this."

That's the only way I can see not pressing charges.
