I think it is highly irresponsible for any physician to recommend such a long and strenuous course of action at 39 weeks, where blood clearly must be diverted from the placenta to her muscles. No one, I repeat, no one could assure her that this was a safe choice."

Excellent addition to Dave's point above that school degree/professional licensing qualifications are not the sine qua non of someone being right. Just like you can look hard enough for a lawyer to bring a frivolous case for you, you can find quack doctors to recommend asinine and dangerous things for you.

Like Michael Jackson's doctor.

Blow jobs for all men at the finish line? Where the fuck do we sign up for this? I'd finish the marathon for sure, either way. :P

I read about her and all I can say is that I would not have done
it. There are other ways of garnering attention when you're w/child,
pretend to feel faint, throw up, tell folks it's your birthday, but run
for miles, not I!!

During labor oxygen is also diverted from the fetus during contractions so this doctor is probably a supporter of every woman having a c-section, too. But he's right, no one could assure her that it was a safe choice...but they couldn't assure her that it was unsafe either.

Numerous studies have been done on the effects of exercise on the fetus and none have proven any association with adverse outcomes in healthy women.

I am not advocating that all pregnant women train for and run a marathon-that would be insane. In fact, I specifically tell women that if they have not already been exercising regularly they should only start a walking program. No woman should begin running during her pregnancy, she should also not run if any complications come up or if she doesn't tolerate running. This woman had already been training, she had already been running before her pregnancy. She was healthy and had no pregnancy complications-besides, she walked at least half and based on her time she obviously did not push herself at all....she saved the pushing for a few hours later.

99.999999% of all pregnant women will never run a marthon-or anything more than a 5K for that matter, but to those that do-safely....kudos to them!

Oh, don't you worry, Dave, I know there are PLENTY of people that know more than I do about the subject....it's just not you.

I'm just telling you what the evidence says-that's all.

And I think the answer is pretty fucking clear.

I wouldn't think it's my place to ask my self why someone else chose to do anything.....

Yeah, ok, you've gone through life never questioning someone's motive(s).

DAMNIT!!!

Of course I've wondered why people would make choices, I just don't think I should judge them based on what I think they were thinking.

PS Thanks for the spelling tutoring.
