2012 Small Works on Paper Exhibition Kicks Off Jan. 5 in North Little Rock
December 19, 2011
The 2012 Small Works on Paper art exhibition will kick off its statewide tour at the William F. Laman Library at 2801 Orange Street in North Little Rock. Presented by the Arkansas Arts Council, the exhibition will be on display at the library from Jan. 5-29. An opening reception is slated for 6-8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 6, at the library. The public reception is free and will include talks by the artists.

Hours for the exhibition are 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Thursday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. To view the complete 2012 touring schedule and the list of the artists whose work was selected, visit www.arkansasarts.com/programs/swop.aspx.

Now in its 25th year, the annual Small Works on Paper exhibition showcases artwork no larger than 24 x 24 inches by Arkansas artists who are members of the Arkansas Artist Registry, an online art gallery coordinated by the Arts Council. The selected work is chosen by an out-of-state juror, who also selects pieces for purchase awards. Purchase award winners receive the cash amount equivalent to the value of their selected works. Funded by entry fees, the purchase award pieces become part of the exhibition’s permanent collection.

The art will be on display in 10 galleries throughout the state in a year-long touring show. The 2012 show features 40 works, which were selected from 246 submissions by juror Marcia Goldenstein. Goldenstein is a professor of drawing and painting at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She has been a visiting artist at numerous institutions around the world and her paintings have appeared in many solo and invitational exhibitions in the United States, Europe and China and are included in a variety of museum, corporate and private collections.

“When I agreed to jury the 2012 Small Works on Paper traveling exhibition I never imagined how difficult it was going to be to select 40 works from a total of 246,” said Goldenstein. “Especially noteworthy for me were the categories of photography and drawing. The range from new technologies (phone cameras) to domestic (stitchery) presented a wonderful variety of media and image making. I believe that this exhibition reveals the best of the rich variety of materials and ideas.”

Six artists were selected to receive purchase awards totaling nearly $2,000: William Barksdale of Cotter; Ginger Grahn of Paragould; Neal Harrington of Russellville; Dennis McCann of Maumelle; Jason McCann of Maumelle; and Mike Means of El Dorado.

Thanks GI! I am working on new work always. Problem is one I started got ripped. So back to the drawing board........don't throw tomatoes!

I know most of you won't be able to attend. But I sure appreciate the support! It is just as hard to get known in the art world as it is in the music business.

I appreciate every bit of input you guys can give. I love what I do, and it took my aunt's own words to encourage me today to a higher level. My family is kind of out to lunch on my art. Her words made me feel much better. e-mail between her and I today. Her words are in blue. I love her so much.

I received your Christmas card and I wanted to thank you for that. My artwork has been labeled as quirky, odd, and by some just disturbing! LOL! And what do those same people think of Pacaso's art work? Half faces with eyes in places where they don't belong and etc. They should be more impressed with your talent of artistry and detail you put in your paintings and drawings. Unlike most people who can't even draw a decent stick person! I guess the latter have never read descriptions by Lewis Carrol (Author of Alice in Wonderland), J.R.R. Tolken (Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit), and Peter S. Beagle (The Last Unicorn). I was a fan of these writers as a child and loved their imaginative writing. I loved books that took me to new worlds with strange creatures and wonder. Mom and Dad I think are proud, but they don't quite get it either. They don't need to "get it" just be proud of you and your talent. I may not "get it" either, but I am so proud of you and your talent and all of your accomplishments.

Some people are so in to "scenery" art, and what I call the "picture perfect" art, they forget there are other kinds of art. The kind of art I don't get is the kind that looks like they took a wide paint brush you would paint a house with, and they go in one direction with one color on the canvas, they might cross over it in the opposite direction with another color and off to the side a swipe with a different or coordinating color and then splatter it with paint and it hangs in doctors offices and corporate buildings and art galleries at the cost of $$$$$$$$$. It just seems anyone could do that. But they come up with a title called "Hues of Spring" or some other fnacy title.
It just seems like anyone could do that sort of art. (If that is real art)

Daryl wrote a short story one time titled "They plain white bucket" I don't even remember how it went but it was about if we were all the same,
like the plain white bucket then how boring this world would be. If I ever find it I will send you a copy. Being different is what makes each of us unique.

You just keep on doing the art that you like doing the most. But if you can do paintings of people as well as the type of art such as "When Stinky met Smelly", then that makes you a VERY talented artist.

Some artist have just one style and you have many! It doesn't matter what other people think. Was any of their art work chosen to be in gallery? I think not!!

No more news. Love you. Love Aunt Kay

Oh well, what can you do? LOL! I have always been the different child. But I guess the world would be a bit boring without a little whimsy and wonder. I love you very much, and I hope your feeling better soon.
End of the message.
