We are a lucky generation.....

Postby Deb » Fri Jun 01, 2012 7:22 am

.....when it comes to music/vocals. I was doing some monotaneous accounting work this afternoon, so I put my IPOD on and up came this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbkOZTSvrHs&ob=av2e LOL, love that song, I'm an absolute sucker for the whoo whoo whoa's in the chorus.

Got thinking to myself, they just don't make them like him and Perry and lots of other very gifted male vocalists from our era. I'm pretty hard pressed to even come up with a couple GREAT male vocalists from my daughter's (22 yo) generation. Can think of a few gifted female vocalists lately, but am I just having a brain fart, as I can't seem to think of any males that stand out lately????

To be honest, Farnham predates Perry by about 10 years. Still, those are two of the best male singers alive today, and John Farnham is one of the very few I would put on the level of Perry when it comes to live performances.

Last male vocalist that really impressed me was Marc Anthony. Having the technical voice is only part of it, and most of the singers you hear are raw on the singing side. Potential? Yes, but raw as all get out. Having the voice and the control is very rare.

Patrick Monahan of Train is really a great singer. If he was born a decade earlier, I could see him having no problem as a power ballad guy, maybe in the style of Rik Emmett.

An older singer who was deceptively powerful was Johnny Mathis. And talk about control. The way he cranks his own volume knob from 0 to 100 during the second half of Misty is amazing.

I'm tired of good singers. American Idol and shows like that have made me despise crooners. I'm now a fan of Lemmy and Motorhead.

"we are a lucky generation". Well isn't that exactly what the generation before us claim, and the generation before that generation claimed, and so on and so on?

Patrick Monahan is my age (43) and happened to grow up in the same city I did. Train has been around since the early 90's I think. So that makes him born at the right time maybe, if he graduated 86/87? Just not "discovered" I guess for quite a while?

Last night, during our show setup, the club had Sirius radio playing an 80s station.

This song came on...I haven't heard it since 82 - when it came out.
Mike Reno really did have a good voice....nice sustain on the held notes. 8)

Love this song - I used to sing along with the Background singers on the harmonies and "oohs" -
and it all came back immediately last night. 8)

Damn, how could I have forgotten this little guy. :) I adore his old school style R&B vibe, this probably isn't the best song to showcase his vocal abilities, but it's just all kinds of fun. Grammy performance............. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJR_NzpN ... re=related

One of the few modern artists' albums I've bought lately...........he reminds me a little of Michael Jackson. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_kFTZyecTU
