MR Donation Drive 2012

Postby Andrew » Mon Apr 23, 2012 2:55 pm

The donation link is on my frontpage once again. I dislike doing this, but need to appeal to folks that haven't donated before - if you enjoy this site - please consider doing so.

The MR PC is dying fast and I need a little help. Cheers folks :D

But badly need the support of as many people as possible to get things back on track at MR.

Anyone from these boards that donates - please let me know and I'll make you part of a special Donator Group that I can perhaps send out discount coupons to and also make that noted in your profile.

How proud you will be to show that off! :P

Thanks folks...

First and foremost. Don't close the site. Scale back, make it a part-time gig, use cheaper hosting, whatever it takes, but do not close the site. It'll be like a blackhole that makes the already-struggling MR scene EVEN worse. My personal plea.

That said, I'll help anyway I can. I'm working on a release for 2013 and need the exposure. I plan to buy ads on your site. I'd like to look into getting a "bonus track" on your MR9 compilation (unless it'll be too late by then). I'll join MRX and buy the digital Fireworks Magazine--I've been meaning to do so anyway. A suggestion about MR Records, though. Please, for the love of goodness, consider selling via CD Baby. It is a much better way to try to sell the music primarily because they'll do the shipping around the world and most importantly, their music sampling system is a hell of a lot more streamlined. I'm also interested in donating but right now my two income household is down to one right now. I'm holding off all my donating (political, charitable or otherwise) until we get that fixed, which--hopefully--is in just a few weeks.

I read the comments on the page and indeed, the scene is pretty bad although quite frankly, I think that the advertisers that pulled out would themselves be doing a lot better if they stepped out of 1997 with their own site designs. I can't believe all the labels and music stores Still streaming raw MP3 clips rather than using sophisticated HTML5 players that will work on phones--where an increasing amount of web traffic is going. The main reason why Frontiers CDs get 99% of my music buying money is because they have a Great "web radio" player that works in RealAudio Player, Winamp, Windows Media Player, iTunes/Quicktime player (and thus, on Androids and iPhones) as well. I bought over 30 CDs last year because of the music I heard on their website while I was at work. I suggested this to the guys at Lion Records and they told me to go look at their Youtube channel. Sorry, but I'm not doing that. The web radio option is great because all I have to do is press play and sit there and listen to the music--I don't have to go making my own playlists. If you're a band, a youtube channel makes sense but I feel music stores could be doing a lot more to grow their customer base. The old "put up a website, wait for customers to come" strategy just ain't gonna cut it anymore. Pretty ads and text only does so much to motivate me to buy music and I AM a music producer. :-/

Anyway, that's enough ranting from me. I hope this all works out. I often wish I could win the lottery because I would put SO much money into businesses like yours and others to really get this scene the exposure it richly deserves. If Melodic Rock weren't being made, I just wouldn't buy music anymore.
Best regards,
~ Dairenn

I would also suggest selling Cd's digital. I bought over 25 Cd's last year, and I believe all were digital format, not a single CD. This year I have bought 6 new releases (Jeremey's, JSS, Jack Blades, House Of Lords, Shy, Van Halen), plus about 7 or 8 older releases. MOST OF WHICH if it wasn't for this site, I never would have heard of them. Your one of the few sites were I like the reviews most of all. I do not always agree with them, but you always try to point out something positive about the CD, you still may not like it, but.....
I emailed you and asked if we order from your advertisers (instead of amazon, Itunes, Rhapsody, etc...) if that helps you?
Let me know.

I donated just after Christmas and ordered the Rick Springfield tribute album a few weeks ago - does that count?

I did the same. Wish I could do more. And will soon enough. Tough times these last few weeks.
