What Music Genre Will Rule the 2010's?

Postby Yoda » Thu Aug 23, 2012 12:50 am

The 70's were ruled by disco, progressive rock, and arena rock toward the end. The 80's were ruled by new wave, AOR music, and hairbands. The 90's were ruled by grunge, alternative rock, and gangsta rap & hip hop. The 2000's, in my opinion, has turned out to be the worst decade of music since I've been on this earth! I used to think that about 90's music, but I have done a complete 180 on 90's music and appreciate it a lot more today than I did back when it was popular (except for Nirvana...lol!) Still, I say the 2000's and so far this decade, the music has been by far the worst crap ever! While I've never been a fan of hip hop music, I can at least appreciate the fact that the 90's rappers had a little more talent than these jokers (but that's not saying much...lol!) Today's popular music that rules the airwaves is filled with pointless lyrics, over use of autotune, and hardly anyone who knows how to play their own instruments. Sure, you have a few great artists sprinkled in here and there, but nothing that stands out as music that would have a loyal following for decades after. The only band of the 2000's (that enjoyed top 40 success) that I really like has been Evanescence. That's about it! And top 40 radio doesn't play them anymore either.

So, with that said, do you think this decade will continue on with the same crap that's "popular" or will this crap implode in the next few years, leading into something better (or worse) as the decade moves along?

Here is what I ask: Let today's "hottest hits" die along with the overuse of auto tune, hip hop, and pointless songs about "th' club". I don't care what it is...just let it be from someone who knows how to sing without a lot of "artificial" use, knows how to write music & lyrics that sound somewhat intelligent, and for Pete's sake, let the music come from real instruments.

Wow I couldn't agree more, Yoda. There is a major lack of talent in the industry and a over saturation of marketing. So much music/vocals etc. is computer generated today. You're right there is a few talented bands and artists that break through, i.e. Matchbox 20, etc. But for the most part, you don't have to have talent, the marketing machine can make anybody, and I mean anybody, a pop/rock star.

A perfect example is Mr Big's last album 'What If...' Alot of people didn't like the raw and real sound of it. There was no overdubbing or anything. Give me 4 extremely talented musicians making rock music and I'm more than happy, I'll take a vocal strain on a random note here or there. To me that's as real as it gets and I'm much happier than with an album of autotunned, overdubbed pop crap for the most part that's on the radio now.

Sure I will enjoy listening to the odd catchy pop tune on the radio once in awhile, but would I actually pay to see that band/artist LIVE......probably not. Talent will always win out over marketing for my music $$.

The industry is all about profit and appearance, get the "music" out as quickly as possible for the least amount of money and don't waste money searching for talent either. Just grab somebody who looks good on camera and let auto-tune do rest.

Yep, you pretty much hit the nail on the head on this one. Unfortunately, I think the 1980's kind of started the "looks" craze. Oh course, most of the artists back then at least created their music.

The problem with music now is that it is not creative and not so much original work anymore, but the younger generation which also happens to be the marketing target doesn't mind this one bit.

Plus with the internet and youtube, anyone can almost be a "star" to some degree without any creativity. It's turned into doing the weirdest shit that makes people popular now. 98% of the dumb shit entertainers do these days is done just for sole purpose of attention, because the more attention they create for themselves, the more popular they become.

I think part of it is the American Idol stuff too. Don't get me wrong, I think there has been some decent talent to come from the show (Carrie Underwood, Daughtry) but it's all manufactured stuff.

Exactly, The days of starting a band in your garage and learning how to play and write songs is long gone. Shows like American Idol provide the same fame and fortune minus the hard work, it's laziness plain and simple.

Bingo, IMO too many kids are addicted to gaming these days, where as other generations some kids were in their garages or basements playing their guitar (drums/bass/etc.) trying to emulate their favorite guitar/rock gods. Kids used to save up for guitars and such, lol instead of games and gaming systems.

Halestorm are rock's best hope. First new band I've been excited about in years.
