First CD You Purchased

Postby JRNYMAN » Fri Sep 07, 2012 4:13 am

hoagiepete suggested in the "First Album..." thread that someone should start a thread dedicated to the first CD we/you/I ever purchased for those of us with already monstrous album collections who basically started over with the advent of digital technology.

And, since I'm already here, I might as well kick it off. :D

Pete brings up a good point. Like many others, I had amassed a fairly large collection of vinyl which I was oh-so careful with, holding them by the very edge, replacing them into their covers as soon as I was finished listening to them and before I got another one out. I can't remember the actual number of records I had, but it was well over 300 - all of which were stored in Peaches record crates (there's a blast from the past, huh? 8) )

The day I bought my first CD was also the day I bought my first CD player. This was in April of 1986. It was a Pioneer 5-disk carousel (which I still have - sentimental reasons, I guess...) and it cost $350.00. My how times have changed. And, the first CD I bought was Journey ROR.

Side Note: That same day, I also per-ordered the much anticipated Boston: Third Stage. After a decade of waiting and rumors every other month that "Did ya hear, Boston's back in the studio...?" it was actually going to happen. I'll never forget the first time I listened to "Cantcha Say" on my home system, cranked way up and sitting in the "sweet spot" of my living room...... I literally got goose bumps!

Anyway, the change from vinyl to digital disk was bittersweet at first. I hated the thought of updating (which, of course meant replacing) my album collection was daunting and somewhat depressing. However, with every disk I bought, the more I looked forward to replacing them with this new technology that was soooooo crisp and clear with no hiss and most noticeably, no clicks and ticks! Interestingly enough, some of the audio editing software that would come along later featured the addition of those very things to your digital recordings.

I never did replace all of my vinyl. The important stuff of course but I decided to leave some of those memories on their original medium and move on. 2 things happened when I moved into the digital age with my music:
1. The care I used to show my vinyl went out the window for some reason with CD's. Most of my CD's haven't seen their original jewel case since the day I bought them. Strange....
2. I bought CD's like a madman - way more than when I bought vinyl. I now have somewhere in the neighborhood of 750 CD's and approx. 100 live performance DVD's.

OK, so I didn't mean to turn this into a novel but I'm sure many of us share the some of the same stories when it comes to buying our first CD and moving into the digital age.

The Alan Parsons Project - Eye in the Sky

The CD still sounds good - after 28 years.

1st ever I think was Hysteria. MAYBE Escape and Departure. Got them at around the same time, and I don't remember the timetable.

Survivor - Vital Signs.

Still have it, and much like you bought with my first cd player in 1985. Portable player for @ $189. I was also 18 and got my first credit card that same day.

Survivor's "When Seconds Count." I didn't even have a CD player at the time, but the store didn't have the cassette version. So when I got home, I had to ask my brother to copy it to a cassette for me on his CD/cassette player.

I was maybe around 13 years old when I bought my first CD's. I didn't own a CD player yet at that time. But my brother who was in his late teens at the time already had a CD player, so I would listen to my CD's on his stereo, and my records and cassettes on my stereo. A year later I bought my own CD player.

Raised on Radio.

I had an album collection of over 700, all in pristine condition and it was stolen. Completely heartbreaking. That was over 20 years ago and I've yet to completely replace all of it. I mean, I have far more than 700 CD's/MP3 Albums, etc. but some of the vinyl I had I simply cannot find anywhere.

Here's a cool little story about this. One day back then I got a little package in the mail from my dear friend Lora. She sent me a couple hard to find or unreleased Journey things to help me "restart" the collection. :) One of them was the 12" release of Only Solutions. Very cool. For me that part always rises above the loss.

GREAT album.

First one I begged my dad to buy me for $2.99 was "Destroyer" and still have it.

First album I bought on my own I believe was Van Halens "Fair Warning".

How many people here still have their vinyl and play it?

Funny but I had some left over vinyl up until around '05/'06 but the last time I had an actual record player that I could play it on was the summer of '84.

I don't have as many as I used to, having sold them to a friend of mine, but I still have my Rush (just added the new one too), Styx, Journey, and Leppard albums.

I don't recall the very first vinyl that I purchased, but I do remember the very last vinyl I tossed out the window of a speeding car.

Interesting read, of sorts. I always considered everything an album. I mean, an album is just a collection...photos, songs, artwork, etc. The medium may be tape, vinyl, CD, or DVD. And even within each of those, there are different formats...reel to reel, 8 track, cassette, ep, lp, super, blu-ray, etc.

Something else I always thought interesting...a 'record'. Does that mean some vinyl or acetate disc? No. The word record is just short for a recording.

Bottom line, we still have today and may always have, records and albums. Perhaps the only real way to differentiate is by decade, or defined era.

Thots?

Bought my first CD player in '89 and the first CD i bought was the single live disc Captured by Journey which instead of being a double CD like the double album it was actually one CD. Not long afterward i got AC/DC Back In Black and KISS Destroyer
