I hate it when....

Postby Memorex » Sun Mar 31, 2013 12:38 pm

...the politics of actors, musicians, etc. surpass their talent and/or success.

It happens frequently. Think of Rosanne as an example. Pretty genius in her creativity and pretty loud mouthed, but the balance was always tipped toward her craft, until it wasn't. And she will likely never come back from it.

You see someone like Alec Baldwin who seems to teeter back and forth but somehow has managed not to fall off the ledge (for many at least - I love the guy).

Martin Sheen is a perfect example of someone that can really take politics and his beliefs and be very vocal, but his endless talent surpasses it.

I think someone like Bruce Willis knows he's probably not the most talented actor in the world, so his beliefs are there, but he keeps a little more quiet about it.

I'm writing this because of all the Jim Carrey news this week. Frankly, his movies have not been good enough in recent years to rise above the fact that he has been insulting more than half the nation. He has probably just lost himself a lot of potential movie-goers. In his position, I think he could better support his cause without being so insulting. It's sad really.

Just my thought for the evening. Back to work.

Hence the reason I've changed my avatar. Not saying I won't watch any more of his movies, because I'm sure I will. He is being an idiot though, and I think he should keep his opinions to himself.

I'll watch if he does something worthwhile.

Jason Biggs on the other hand... I'm not catholic, but what a piece of shit that guy is and this isn't the first idiotic comment of his. I mean, have some respect if your in the public eye. He never had any talent in the first place, so it's not like he is in danger of somehow not being taken seriously anymore.

So a man devotes his life to Christ and kisses the feet of the poor and somehow that's worth a shithead comment from someone whose claim to fame is sticking their dick in a pie. I kind of officially despise this guy, if I even cared. I wonder how the over one billion Catholics feel about him. Douche.

This is what happens when "movie stars" confuse what they do with real life....

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Mentioning Rosanne Barr(f) in any conversation is an intent credibility killer unless discussing drugs, fugly obnoxious Z grade celebrities or contraceptives.

Jim Carrey was always an idiot and this latest episode just further proves this point.

All that being true, my point was that her success was such that it overshadowed everything and at some point, it stopped and now people almost forget and just see her as this crazy old bat.

This is exactly how I've "weeded out" my album collection, started with U2 maybe ten years ago.

Let's not forget to add Toby Keith, Clint Eastwood, Chuck Norris, Ted Nugent, dead as a brick Charlie Heston...

You also left out Gene Simmons.

Well Jaxmanjoe, it works both ways.

I'm guessing that was his point, since I think all the previously mentioned celebs were left-leaning. (though I haven't heard about the Jim Carrey thing yet... I'll need to look that up.)

The big difference is all the individuals who jaxmanjoe named were born in America. All these fucking yahoos like U2 and such, they were not even born here yet they come to our country and tell us how it should be run. They need to go back to their own country and tell them how to run it. At which point they'd probably be kicked in the nuts for it. They come here because they know they can get away with it.

I did mention Bruce Willis, who is right-leaning.

Toby Keith is still popular and such. Clint still churns out great movies. Chuck Norris became his own thing. He's kind of like Baldwin in that regard. He never had a ton of talent to begin with, but he is far more respectful than some of the others I mentioned. Nugent - He's been the same since day one. And of course Heston again was very talented and much more respectful than these other folks.

Both sides here have very respectful people who talk intelligently about their ideals and both sides have yahoos and cooks.

When someone comes out and says a gun owner is a mother fucker just for being a gun owner, that's just stupid. Carrey seems a little unhinged lately. And when someone degrades the pope, it's stupid.

Now let me clarify. I'm talking about entertainers that tip the balance. I could care less who says what, but these people are trading success for the views and doing it in a way that is neither helpful nor productive. We can say stuff all day long on this board because our income doesn't depend on people liking us on this board. That's my point.

Great post! I agree completely. If Carrey had come out and stated his opinion respectfully, I wouldn't have a beef with him. I wouldn't AGREE with him, but at least I'd still have respect for him. Same goes for the rest of them. I would say that out of everyone on the right, Nugent would have to be one of the most extreme. I don't agree with everything he says either, but he does have some of the same ideals I have.

I just get sick of these damn actors that come out against gun violence and weapons, yet star in movies where they kill over and over with them. Just STFU already. These are the same stars that are against pollution and push saving the environment, yet fly all over the world in jets living the life of luxury that is anything BUT bad for the environment. Fuck them. Nothing but a bunch of hypocrites with silver spoons sticking out of their asses.

The trick is to not give a shit. Tom Cruise has been crucified in the press for years because of his "bizarre" beliefs and personal stunts, in no way does it make him less of an actor.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Tom Hanks is another outspoken one but like Cruise, his body of film work shouldn't be missed simply because of his opinions.
I just don't like Jim Carey, nothing to do with politics. This thread was the first I've heard about his political leanings. If I delved into the history of outrageous quotes from Hollywood and started taking them to heart, I'd probably cancel my cable and Netflix subscriptions. Everyone in Tinsel Town eventually says something that will bring down the left or right hammer on them. If it's not being preached to me through the content they're starring in though, e.g., Battlefield Earth, I really don't have an issue with it.

Definitely not one of Travolta's finest.
But more or less, we're on the same page. People who get hung up on that stuff should be bitchslapped.

For me it's more subtle. I just lose interest. I never purposely don't watch someone. I just kind of move on. I think that's what happens for a lot of people.

Yep. Like I just did. I'm not commenting about law abiding citizens who just want to buy ammunition, or someone who wants to own a rifle. I'm talking about assholes who use their popularity and status to stand above the people who helped them earn their millions of dollars and disrespect them in public repeatedly. Law abiding citizens who buy these items do not shove their opinions down these celebrities throats and chastise them for their beliefs. We're supposed to be supportive of them though when they tell us we're all inbreds and dumb asses for wanting to own or possess firearms? And I'm supposed to be respectful talking about these guys? YEAH.

The kick in the gut to me though is how many of these guys (and gals) have several movies where they blow the shit out of people with the same weapons they're "against". Fuck them.

I can...when John Mellencamp left the stage and on the big screen came this 20 minute video clip ragging on war, Bush, etc. I didn't go to his concert to see that and I never will pay to see him again because of it.

I love Mellencamp tot his day and his talent is just incredible. But I did worry when he started down that path. I knew people that really took offense. And you'll kind of notice the slide of his career coupled with his outspokenness.
