I saw it, and I didn't think it had anything that the band would find controversial. It's like they wanted to do a BEHIND THE MUSIC on VH because there isn't one already. One bad strike against it was that it was SORELY missing original VH music on it. It would have been so much better with VH music.

It also had too much "stock footage" for entertainment.. the stock footage that had nothing to do with the band, but which was used to "illustrate" certain things. I'm not talking of the band stuff, but the other "stock footage". When you see it, you'll know what I mean.

The interviews were pretty good and insightful.

I haven't seen Van Halen : The Early Years even though I plan on watching it when I get the chance speaking as an old VH fan but the cover itself is a classic similiar to their debut album. I wouldn't compare theVH DVD to the VH1 Behind The Music specials at all more like The Compleat Beatles the rockumentary on the Beatles from the 80's.

I disagree. The entire gist of the VAN HALEN THE EARLY YEARS DVD is to mirror the BEHIND THE MUSIC formula. It's like an hour long... if you take out the useless "stock photography footage", you get a 45 minute documentary. It tries to be shocking in some parts... when some of the past roadies say some stuff that the band used to do while on tour. It was nothing shocking, to say the least. Nothing close to Led Zeppelin, anyway. No Van Halen music... just Van Halen-like music in the background. The interviews were pretty good, and insightful.. but that's it. It's only for the hardcore VH fan... if you're not one of them, steer clear of this DVD.

On the other hand, the COMPLEAT BEATLES video... if you're talking about the one that David Warner narrated... that was a excellent video. It was an hour and a half... well put together, and very insightful. That video is miles better than VAN HALEN THE EARLY YEARS DVD.
