Reunion II CD

Postby locobenno » Sat Jun 26, 2004 8:13 pm

G'day all, just wanted to blab on a little about this whole Roth vs Hagar frontman topic. I've never had the fortune of seeing either version of the band live, but from what I can gather from bootlegs that I've heard and own, Hagar comes across alot better on the live stage.

I recently got a hold of a high quality version of "Reunion II"; (if you haven't heard of it) its kind've a best-of bootleg that was put together by a group of traders and then digitally remastered and pressed. "Its a collection of live songs that people all wanted to hear live again". Well with the exception of "Litte Dreamer", this thing is horrible, and to me its all down to Roth. Showman yes, singer no. I was so disapopinted, I was looking forward to getting this for years.

And to compare it to Hagar bootlegs, well even when Hagar's lost his voice or its an audience recording, he just sounds so much better.

I'm by no means referring to Roth era studio material here, just the live stuff I've heard. Roth's studio performances are great, 1984 is probably my favourite Van Halen album ever, so yeah I'm not going down that road.

Here's hoping to seeing them on the road this time out.

Cheers and beers

I'm in a similar situation... I like Sammy better than I like Dave...
Dave era VH rocked, but so did Sammy era VH... I own all albums...
I just happen to like Sammy era better...

But the simple fact is Sammy voice is still as strong today as the day he joined VH, whereas DLR voice has gone (according to most people who've seen him live... some DLR fans will say he still sound great even if he sang out his arse...)

The simple facts are DLR was the best singer VH had, until 1985, then they got another singer who was the best singer they had from 1985 till today (and who I like better)... end of story...

Everyone can bitch and moan about who is better than who, but the simple fact is Sammy is in VH, and DLR is a lounge singer in Vegas...

That'd be nice!!!
I saw Sammy on his Marching To Mars tour in Melbourne 6 or so years ago, and I saw him at Rockfest in Wisconsin about 4 years ago... both shows seriously rocked!

The only VH concert I saw, was the Gary era tour a few years back, which was OK, but not great...

If Mike Tramp & JSS can come to Australia, so can bloody VH!!!!
Cheers,
Richard

Marching in Sydney

Postby locobenno » Sun Jun 27, 2004 1:05 pm

Yeah dude, I caught Sammy on his Marching tour in Sydney, good ol' Bondi Hotel (Selina's I think). He played for three hours and he just kept going, was awesome. Another bonus was seeing The Poor in support, LOVE that band.

<sigh> Yeah be great to see the boys out here, but alas, I may have to let my mates talk me into flying to LA in August to see them...and that'd be tops on too many levels but its money that I can't justify spending. Have you been reading about the 4 and 5 star packages being offered by some promoters/ticket agencies? Some dudes have been getting to watch the soundcheck (1.5 ish hours) and then hanging out in the "rings" during the show. I'm thinkin' about it...

I'd love to go to LA, but with a new baby to look after, it ain't gonna happen for me...
I'll just have to make do with JSS & Mike Tramp...
Cheers,
Richard

I always said Sammy was the better singer. But... There's still something about the Dave era that is just fucking special! even though he's not a singers singer.
