No VH live album from the DLR era?

Always wondered why they never put out a live CD from the Roth era. I'm sure the early live stuff would have been awesome!

Of course, it took Led Zeppelin until 2003 to put out a real live album...

I don't even know if quality materials exists from that era for a live album. That would be a huge seller.

It was talked about in '00. The big rumor du jour then was one of my all-time favorites. Summer tour to support a double dave era live album kicked off with a July 4th show @ RFK in DC.

I remember reading something about a Roth era live album. If it was Eddie, Al, or Mike (I can't remember) they said a live ablum would be a bad thing, a live video/DVD would be the better way to go because with DLR it was a VISUAL show, it had to be seen to be believed.

Look at the live videos for Unchained and So This Is Love. As much as I diss DLR I wouldn't mind seeing something like that.

I agree completely that a large part of the DLR era magic came from his showmanship and stage presence. He was larger than life!!

But I also think that is why he struggles so much now...he still wants to be larger than life and he is not.

I think there will be a live album celebrating the original Van Halen in the near future, possibly on the 30th anniversary of the split between Eddie & Dave, because they're such a legendary band.

There's a few boots of the DLR era, and most of them aren't pretty. Dave was a personality more than a singer. I've got a few boots, and they're fun because they give me a glimpse of something I am way too young to have ever experienced, but musically, I don't think it would be doing the band any favors to have it available to the masses. In a carefully controlled studio situation, I think he's a very unique vocal talent...no one could've sung those songs quite like him, but live he was either somewhat drunk or more concerned with putting on a show than singing in tune or remembering all the words. There's video of a Diver Down show in Maryland, and the much-circulated 1983 US Festival video as well...unfortunately the video quality isn't really up to commercial standards, so i doubt they'll ever see release.

I think the memory of those DLR shows is a lot better than the shows actually were (at least musically), and my guess is that the brothers have heard the tapes and realize this.

I saw VH once with Roth and the reason I can think of for them never releasing live Vh with Roth is simple....the guys were all blasted during those days. The quality of the music live the time I saw them was terrible. I bet Eddie doesn't want to be remembered for his live performances those days. It wasn't just David or Eddie...all four were hammered.

I think it should also be noted that Dave has never released any solo live material either.

You'd think the EEAS band would've made a great live video, but I think even Dave knows he's not much of a singer live. He's a showman and a personality, but that's a lot harder to pull off on record than it is in an arena with a huge sound system. Dozens of singers have put out live albums of their old bands' hits (Paul Rodgers, Fish, Paul Di'Anno, John Wetton, Brian Wilson, etc). I'm sure any number of labels would've jumped at the opportunity to release something from one of DLR's recent tours that featured almost all Van Halen material, and I'm sure Warner would've released a live album or video from the Roth/Sheehan/Vai/Bissionette lineup, but think the general belief was/is that it wouldn't do Dave's legacy any favors. I have some DLR-era bootlegs, and it's obvious that they put on a great show, but musically Roth was a severe weak link in the band onstage.

Well, I remember going to see this new band called Journey. Ronnie Montrose was opening for them.

but, there was some band we never heard of who opened before Montrose

And I can tell you this, that was the best 6 bucks I ever spent and no one in that hall had any complaints about David Lee Roth's voice that night

There might not be a LIVE era release of the original VH anytime soon but I know they have put out some great performances LIVE with DLR . As a 15 year nerd at the time I witness this in 1982 on the Diver Down tour in Los Angeles and they put on a great f**kin show . And I was SOBER that night guys. haha. Theyve got some good boot videos out there and they can easily go in there and fix the sound with no problem. Rock on guys

i have a pretty good sounding 1984 tour, Dave's favorite word was F**k. used every time he got a chance. But I am surprised they never did release a live CD-ERIC
