Snubbed by Sammy?!

Postby VH101 » Thu Jun 15, 2006 12:59 am

At the June 11 Dallas show for the current Livin' It Up tour, there was no sight of the "Cabo Village" (the Cabo Wabo-themed experience that is to include barbecues with Mexican fare, sand volleyball, mariachi bands, and last but not least, authentic Waboritas made with Cabo Wabo tequila). The entrances to the seating areas were blocked off until the supposed showtime, leaving thousands of fans sitting around or milling about the concession areas of Smirnoff Music Centre (amphitheater).

Does anybody know what the deal was? My guess is that the city of Dallas pulled the plug on the pre-show festivities. I'm still waiting for a response from redrocker.com.

Oh, and by the way, the show was mediocre to slightly enjoyable at best. I never thought I'd leave before the concert was over, but it just didn't measure up to my expectations. :(

Did the Dallas fans throw bottles at the band for this snub? (Sorry, Journey forum insider joke).

Sorry to hear that. Makes me think twice about going July 1.

the politicians and councilmen are always throwing up roadblocks to this kinda thing.
My guess is they tried to shake the Red Rocker down for a bunch of bogus fees for the fun stuff he created and he told them to get bent.

Yeah. And Journey had trouble giving Generations away at some shows. All kinds of red tape in this business. I wouldn't blame Sammy. Now, why did the show itself disappoint?

Sammy's set was solid. It was "The Other Half" that disappointed. Some songs were great (e.g. "Humans Being" and "Good Enough"). Some songs were just about awful (e.g. "Right Now"). Part of the reason their performance suffered is because Sammy's too nice! He autographed more stuff than I've ever seen, and was absent on some vocals. Also, not being a basketball fan, I didn't appreciate the game updates after each song. Sure, it's the Maverics first time to the finals, but hey, if I'd wanted to hear about basketball I'd have gone to the sports bar down the street.

My signature line below sums up the major factor for the disappointment...

 hey, 101. How about the liner notes to Red Voodoo when hagar, presumably with a straight face, wrote something like, "to Vic, the greatest guitarist i've ever worked with" or something ridiculous to that effect.
Sam the man hizself is a better axeman than Johnson.

They did that to him in 2003 at DTE (Pine Knob) here in Michigan. He wanted to sell Cabo Wabo and they wanted him to pay them some crazy amount of scratch, somehting like 10g's because Smirnoff was a sponsor.

He told them to f**k off, didn't sell any then came around in 05 with the first gen of that Cabo Village and sold crazy amounts.

It's VERY good, but very expensive. It goes anywhere from $50-70 a bottle. I had a friend who worked at a liquor store who gave me a deal. I'm not that much of a tequila fan, but this is very smooth. I've only drank it straight so far! lol! I did buy some mixes in the store the other day and I'm going to give it a blended try. Party at my house!

You know that Jamaicans and Puerto Ricans have a rum rivalry going that rivals the Hagar/Roth or Augeri/Perry debates?

Well, if it's making him enough money to where he is thinking of being able to do FREE shows soon, I'm all for it! About the same price as a ticket and it will last me longer!

Ohhh yeah!

The Blanco's good. The Reposado's awesome. Still trying to save enough for the Añejo. But, if it's anywhere near the quality of Don Julio or Honorable Añejo, look out!

Cabo Wabo is the ONLY tequila I can drink and it's GREAT. IMO, Patron don't got shit on it. lol
I'm a bartender, so I made sure that Cabo was in the bar. Introduced Waboritas to a LOT of people.
I'm a big fan of the Repasado. Blanco is pretty good, but the Anejo, The most expensive one, is rather nasty to me. I'm still waiting for the New one to come out "Golden Eagle". I believe it's going to be upwards of $125 a bottle.
Think I'll stick to the $36 bottle of Repasado and just get a SHOT of Golden Eagle. lol.

Good stuff, Maynard...reposado, mainly...as straight, pre-going out shots
and in margaritas. It is a bit pricey, but not out of line with other comparable tequilas. 8)

I met Sammy a few years ago, and he was very friendly to me. But I agree his solo band the Waboritas aren't great. I have all their albums and DVD's because Sammy is my favorite singer. But if Sammy replaced all the Waboritas tommorow, I wouldn't care.

Sure if you're used to a cheap mixto like that nasty Cuervo Gold, Cabo Wabo is expensive. But actually Cabo is some of the cheapest priced 100% agave tequila out there, at least for the blanco and reposado, which are $30 and $40 respectively, here in TN, and should be even cheaper out west (most tequilas are much cheaper in Cali than out here). While most tequilas don't have much price difference (often $5 or so) between the 3 aging varieties, Cabo's anejo is much more than the other two. I don't like anejo though, so that's not a problem I have to worry about. Anejo is too woody to me (which is exactly what it's supposed to be - aged longer in wood). Reposado is just woody enough for me most of the time (some tequila's rep. is still too woody). So some tequilas I like blanco, some rep. Just depends on the tequila.
Anyway, Cabo is far from the best, but for the price, it's hard to beat. Not considered a premium tequila by most tequila affectionados, but certainly a good mid-level. I like it! And if you're just going to shoot it or make marguiritas, it's a waste to buy a premium tequila anyway (and don't use anejo). Best to drink it straight, room temp, sipped from a snifter glass.
You wanna talk expensive, I can name some $200, $300 bottles of tequilas. Even a $1000!

And don't get me started on Patron. That's the worst excuse for a 100% tequila made. Way overpriced and way overrated. I hear so many people claim it's the best and that's all they drink, but the fact is most of the time they haven't tried much else (maybe Cuervo). LOL. Ask most any tequila affectionado and they'll tell you the same (Patron sucks).

Cabo is awesome. It's somewhat expensive (I just graduated from college last month, so my budget is a bit tight) but it's honestly my favorite tequila. Mmmmm....

Why don't you post a review of that show, AKay?

Gig reviews. I wanna hear about it. Niggy. Tom Kiefer, another one who blew it out and had the surgery and is now recording and touring. All's not lost.

Was it here that someone mentioned Kiefer's voice being shelled? When I saw Cinderella here last July, he sounded great, but yeah, it was a little rough on Sunday. He belted out one long high blastin' note on Nobody's Fool and we're like, 'THAT should help the voice out a lot!". Cinderella's show was about the same as last summer's. They did up my favorite's "Last Mile" "Coming Home" and "Shake Me" of course.

Now, I went for Cinderella, because I'm not much of a Poison fan, but I have to say they were the better of the two and I was quite impressed by the show they put on. Lots of energy, sounding tight, maybe some lip synching(kidding!) Took me a while to recognize Bobby Dahl. He just ....looked different. Maybe because they were sober! CC did this great solo tune called, "I Hate Every Bone in Your Body But Mine" It was actually a pretty good tune. Ricki had a great drum solo and they had the crowd rockin'! Wraped it up with Talk Dirty and it was a killer show!

I just didn't get backstage to see if Brett really is bald.

Did they play We're An American Band?

RE: Kiefer. yep, sometime after Heartbreak Station his voice completely and suddenly blew out. Had the Elton John/Rod Stewart surgery after a while of trying to rehab it but only being able to talk, not sing.
