That song absolutely flat out, stone cold SMOKES.

I agree. To me that's a toss-up between Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do and Relentless for the all-time best Dave or Sammy songs (solo or VH). I shit my pants the first time I heard "Relentless". The lyrics are SO Dave.

"I've got no place for second place
And I lead with my face
Well, I've been places with my face
You wouldn't go without a pistol."

Yep.
AMAZING in every way, musically, lyrically just a nasty ass tune.

"Look into my eyes.....RELENTLESS....I will not BE denied."

How totally cool is that little intro to Black Sand, too?

Took all day to weigh in on this beyond 7 Wishes NAILING Relentless.

'78-'84

1) I'll Wait -----Every era has "One Of These." A song so incredible and so incredibly DIFFERENT that it's just unstoppable
2) Secrets ---Enjoy very much hearing the band and Dave in a pensive mood.
3) Big Guitars----I'm gonna kinda cheat and tack Little Guitars onto this gem of love song
4) D.O.A.--- may have made it on the strength of Edward's intro alone. Then the body of the song kicks in and it's game, set, match.
5) Little Dreamer----'Nother terrific intro and I never get over the lines "Remember when they voted you least likely to succeed? Then I had to tell them you were armed with all you need."

'86-'96

'96
Both Me Wise Magic and Can't Get This Stuff are superb and top out that year's earlier "Humans Being" by a country mile. Darker Dave stuff.

1) Finish What You Started---The Sammy era "One Of These" Dunno where Edward found this sound, never captured it live but thank GOD it's on 0U812.
2) Man On A Mission--- Undeniable message. Terrific hard rock
3) Don't Tell Me----Filthy kind of slow-burner with amazing chorus and crunchy/heavy Ed guitars)
4) Spanked ---little bluesy feel (least to my ears) and some fine raunch. I just can't relate to that "both feet up watching TV" lyric, though. :)
5) "5150"---awesome intro and great main riff. A song that is sneaky cool.

'98

1) Dirty Water Dog---the short-lived Cherone era's "One Of These"
2) W/ Out You---love rubbing it in to the III rippers that this was a #1 single.
3) One I Want---Like the urgency and drama of the song
4) Fire In The Hole---Very close to classic VH heavy rock,
5) From Afar---something very different and pretty hard, the reverb/echos Ed used were pretty cool.

Just downloaded Relentless, and YEAH, wow!!!

I love this board for that. I hadn't even heard of Sammy's solo album until I started coming here and I'm so in love with his version of "I Love this Bar" it hurts. LOL

Pretty easy to come up with a list as all the following songs (16) are on a special CD which never leaves my car and it's one of the most spinned CDs @ home.

Dave era:

1.Panama - one of my all time Dave/VH faves hands down
2.Little Dreamer - cool as hell
3.Ice Cream Man - all Dave, the dirty shameless sexy rock star he is
4.Dance The Night Away - VH brilliance
5.Jump - although it's been played everywhere ad nauseam,I still love it to pieces with both Dave and Sammy.
(I'll never ever forget the MEGA mindblowing sound of it and 40000 people jumping all at once when Sammy said so,an entire stadium going NUTS! The best concert ever in Rotterdam at Ahoy in '93.)

bonus:I'll Wait - for all the obvious reasons

Dave solo:Just Like Paradise

Sammy era:

1.Dreams - perfect guitars, drumming and THAT awesome voice.
2.Feels So Good - so good,so good,so good...make you feeeeeel nice!so nice LOL
3.Love Comes Walking In - haunting tune
4.Black and Blue - an infectious tune, love the vocals
5.Poundcake - smokin' intro,God bless the drill. Special Sammy delivery

and another 4:

Man On a Mission - love at first hearing, still love it after all this time
Love Comes Walking In - haunting tune
Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do - one of the best sounding VH song out there, the intro is a killer
Not Enough - a sentimental Sammy is all I want sometimes, this song makes my heart sing

Um,Gary who? (sorry,but no.)

78 - 84

Romeo Delight - The best of the Dave era!!! Fast riffs, catchy and heavy, and Gary did a good job on it on the "III" tour.

Meanstreet - Killer intro!!!! Great lyrics, and killer chorus.

Ice cream man - Their best cover. Dave at his cheekiest and a awesome heavy ending

I'll wait - Great pop song. Very underated, and Michael McDonald of the doobie brothers handles most of lyrics.

Jump - Have to put it in there!!!!! Simple....

86 - 96

5150 - Title track off album, and best song VH has ever done!!!! Big statement but it is, VH on top of their game. Best vocals ever, best guitar playing ever, smokes on "Live without a net".
Whole album badly needs remastering!!!!

Humans Being - How I wished a full album would've been done around this time instead of a Hagar/Ed feud. Some good writing around this time. Essential stuff. Dark, moody, angry......HEAVY!!!!!

Feelin - Best track off "Balance", Dark and moody too. Hagar at top of his game.

Summer nights - Great intro, Great party anthem, Great live too.

Right now - Should've been a single and crossover hit

Wow, this is like asking someone otpick their favourite child! As I don't have any children, fine by me...

DLR Era:
Dance The Night Away
Ice Cream Man
Panama
Could This Be Magic?
Jump (I know, I know...)

Sammy:
Right Now
Dreams
When It's Love
Can't Stop Lovin' You
Top Of The World

'The Dream is Over' comes close (what a chorus!)

When DLR left VH, I was so childish and really didn't want to like the new VH. I bought 5150 and loved in but then never purchased anything VH after that for quite some time. Finally I saw them blow Bon Jovi off the stage a few times at Wembley and the love was reignited. Now, I have to say, by the time I finally admitted to myself, I prefer Sammy Era now, DLR comes back. No he doesn't...yes he does...no he d...(ad infinitum)

A good topic that I just can't resist and I have to agree with VH101 that this is definitely subject to change.

Dave
Atomic Punk
Light Up The Sky
Romeo Delight
Little Guitars
House Of Pain

Sammy
Get Up
5150
A.F.U. (Naturally Wired)
Pleasure Dome
Amsterdam

Gary
Without You
One I Want
Year To The Day
From Afar

It was hard to leave Unchained off of this list but, since it was only 5 songs, I had to leave it off. Judgment Day or The Dream Is Over were also tough to ignore but Pleasure Dome is a great song, too. Decisions, decisions.
