You seriously have the Giants "on the fringe" with a 5-4 record and 4 straight losses? I'm on record right now saying the Giants won't make the playoffs this season!

Obviously those are teams that have some things to work out to be considered top 10 material. The Giants are on a 4 game losing streak but they still have some room to turn it around, thus on the fringe. They are only 2 games out of the division race, and still have Philly to play and Dallas to play, Dallas who they already beat. They aren't out of this thing yet.

A team without Chris Henry. Just like Denver beat a NE team without Bruschi, Harrison, Vrabel, and Seymour

You mean the 2009 Patriots? :?

WTF are you talking about dude? You do realize that none of these guys play for the Patriots, right? Denver beat the Patriots fair and square. The Patriots were certainly not playing well earlier in the season and the game went to OT, but Denver won the game. That said, Denver doesn't scare me, even a little. If they make the playoffs, they're a one and done team. It's been a nice little run for them, but Kyle Orton is still Kyle Orton!

I'm trying to assert that the Patriots are down 4 guys on defense. Through retirements, and releases. Bruschi, Harrison, Vrabel, and Seymour, the heart of the defense is gone. So when a team beats the Patriots, it doesn't beat the same team that went 18-1. Now the Patriots have had historic trouble with Denver, I get that....and the teams that NE crushes they would crush no matter who was retired, hurt, released....etc. But the teams that NE loses to are teams that would be beat if those 4 players were still here. And we are talking about being here LAST year. Not in 1985, John. Seriously, Hannah, Grogan?!?!

My Brady question was legit. 11 games won with Cassel. Superbowl with Brady. End of story. Who is missing matters. Especially for a team that is known to annilhilate everyone they play....

BTW, no fanboy here....I'm a Lions fan, remember?

I think the point is we are talking this year. It's one thing to talk about someone on the roster that's injured. It's a whole different story to talk about guys released/retired. I don't think anyone ever said Team X who beat Team Y is beating the same Team Y from Z years ago here?

That's like me running around discrediting people who beat the Cavs next year if LeBron signs elsewhere.

See....this is what irks me....illogical assertions. Whether someone is hurt for the entire season, or retired....the point is they aren't playing. There is absolutely no difference between Brady being injured, and out for the year....and Harrison beinig retired, and out for the year.

There is a huge difference. Brady, a player in his prime, is out of the game beyond his (and the team's) control and would be playing but for circumstances outside both his and the team's control. A player who is retired is done by his own choice. There's a huge difference there. Not to mention the considerable impact that even getting one season older can have on a player's performance in the NFL. There's just no way of telling how effective retired player(s) X (Y, and Z) would be if they weren't retired.

I still don't get the point you're trying to make. Players retire and players get injured. You play the teams as they lie. That's sports. Did you think the players from the 07-08 Patriots were going to play together forever or something?

That's not the point. I'm sorry, I don't even know your name.

It just rattles me to no end when players, and fans get all giddy when they beat a perrenial powerhouse....a powerhouse that doesn't have the same players anymore. Yeah, let's get all excited that you beat the Patriots in '08 without Tom Brady. That's my point.

uhh... weren't you just up there a few posts trying to nullify the Broncos' win over the Pats this year because they didn't have guys who have mostly retired? So basically, you're not allowed to get excited over beating the Patriots (a very good team, even last year) unless its the exact 07-08 lineup ?

I'll indulge you...only because you're a Patriots fan! The Patriots won 11 games last year because they had and have some VERY good players on offense and their offensive scheme is brilliant! I said prior to this season starting (and it's somewhere on this forum) that Matt Cassel would be nothing in Kansas City, and proved to be correct. If you seriously believe that the Patriots won because of their defense last season, you're either not watching the games or simply don't get football. This vaunted defense that you seem to think the Patriots had last season ranked 25th in the NFL in points given up, which is AWFUL! Their secondary last season couldn't cover ANYONE! The ranked 15th in sacks and 15th in interceptions. Their defense last season was only one of eight NFL teams not to score a TD. They ranked 20th in forced fumbles. They were simply not a defense who ever made any big plays! Furthermore, Rodney Harrison, who was a great player in his day, had been a non-factor and mostly injured his final couple of seasons. Richard Seymour has been one of the most overrated players in football since the Patriots drafted the guy. Very average player, in my opinion. Bruschi was completely useless his finally two seasons and simply couldn't play any longer. The only guy out of the group you mentioned that I think had ANY value at all was Vrabel. He was always a very smart player and I didn't agree with the Patriots cutting him loose. That said, he is another old player who has seen his best days.

If you want to bang the drum about the Patriots defense, last season wasn't the season to do it. Even though coming into this season I had ZERO confidence in the Patriots defense, it has been VERY solid and VERY underrated. The season is halfway over and only the Colts have given up fewer points in the entire NFL than the Patriots. This team has a pretty solid defense and Jerod Mayo and Vince Wilfork are two dominant players. Merriweather is Rodney Harrison reincarnated! This team will definitely make some noise when the playoffs roll around and I believe their defense will be a huge part of it. I still don't think their defense is great, but it's young (the Patriots all of a sudden have one of the youngest defenses in the league after having one of the oldest last season) and still improving every week.

Excelent post, however you didn't answer my question. Why did the Patriots only win 11 games last season?

EDIT: I guess you did halfway answer it in your first fews lines...but I was thinking you were gonna join my belief that if Brady doesn't go down in game 1, that the patriots are in Superbowl.

Answer this, and answer honestly.....Why did the Patriots only win 11 games last year?
