absolutely wonderful singer, good song, and an abysmal video. Not sure how horrendously overexposed counts for "artsy". Very amateurish--as are most all of the Frontiers videos.

I'm still surprised Free came out of retirement. Regardless of the fact that the voice never changed, it was career suicide. Doesn't sound like the voice has changed one iota in the past 15 years.

and for those interested in trivia.......when Free left Unruly Child, the replacement was none other than Kelly Hansen, who is now with Foreigner.

which would have been SO much better with Hansen. Some very good songs, and some (at least, to me) awful vocals. Going from Hansen to Keeling is a tremendous step down.

well, that said, I never cared too much for the Free-fronted UC album either. A couple of great songs mixed in with a bunch of filler. Signal was MUCH better. Mark Free always struck me as a Class A singer who did a bunch of singing with Class B-C bands. Great voice, but some very patchy albums overall.

apart from a few songs, thoroughly average and pretty weak lyrically. Understand that the "I'm a rock star and this is what it's like to be a rock star" lyrics don't move me at all, and the first KK album was full of that. The second album was still pretty patchy also. The Iron Eagle song was quite good though.

Without the presence of Carmine Appice from Rod Stewart (and other) fame, I doubt they would have been signed. Without a singer as good as Mark Free who could elevate the material somewhat, I don't know if they would have been signed even with Carmine on board.

Hmmm....well you gotta know that Mark was one of the main song writers in every group he's been in. he usually lets the guitar player come up with the music, while he lays the melody and writes the lyric...so when you criticize the B and C bands he's played with, what exactly are you criticizing?

just to me that you have one of the best singers out there singing with some very average bands (generally). Free can sing circles around the vast majority of singers. A very soulful singer with a great feel for melody and better vocals than many singers who made it big.

That said, I don't think that being a great vocalist has anything to do with being a great songwriter. Steve Perry is a great singer, but a very average songwriter by himself. Fortunately, he had help from some good songwriters to write or co-write with. Bob Catley has never written a song, but when you have Tony Clarkin around, you don't need to. Same with Danny Bowes who had Luke Morley around to write great songs for him to sing.

Free's two best albums, to me, were Signal (who had Mark Baker), and the demos released as the Mark Free - Long Way From Love solo album written by the Randall sisters.

as said before, Mark Free (or Marcie Free) is one of the BEST singers out there, who did everything from very melodic AOR to hard rock. Quite a large body of recorded work, including about 200-300 demos for just about everyone--including Jonathan Cain.

Hey, sorry -- didn't mean disrespect toward anyone. I was watching the video and kept thinking she reminded me of someone, and it was bugging me so I just started tossing out names. I have nothing but empathy for anyone who has been thru that kind of a struggle, but I know I have no clue what it's like to be in that particular situation. I was excited to hear about this album and will be getting a copy soon.

I think this says everything...and more.

http://www.lazyrocker.com/index.php?opt ... &Itemid=66

After the ‘Tormented’ album there was a long time of silence around you. You made an impressive decision in your life which takes a lot of courage. How do you look back at that time in your life ?

Marcie: Well, I really had no choice in the matter. It was either be true to myself, or die at that point. My drinking and drugging to numb the pain of being me had taken it’s toll and were not working any longer. I couldn’t’ go on if I wanted to live. After “Tormented” I needed to be alone and start a new life. Music became a part of my past. When it got down to it, I looked back on why I wanted to be famous and it all made sense to me. I had to be loved on such a grand scale so as to prove to myself and my parents, who I secretly thought hated me, that I was worthy of love because I did not love who I was.
In fact I loathed who I was born as. I had no self esteem. I needed to find myself and learn how to give myself the love that I so desperately sought from others. With my faith firmly planted in God and things worthy of praise and self esteem, I was able to venture out in the world slowly but surely. Today I know that I am on the right life path. Because it led me to being back with my natal family as well as my musical family Bruce, Guy, Jay and Larry. I couldn’t be more happy. Finally! Thank you GOD!!!!! I guess the moral of the story is, “Learn to love yourself, and THEN you will be able to love others.”

and here...
http://www.melodicrock.com/interviews/marciefree.html

Just how dark did things get for you Marcie?
If I could've wished myself back to heaven instead of living my life as I am I would have. I never had the courage to actually harm myself. But I thought about it many times.

Yet, you had the courage to make that decision....
Courage or desperation? I think I had no choice in the matter. If I would've continued my life as Mark I would have died for sure.

Marcie's story is heartwrenching!! One will never know the torment
she experienced without walking in those particular shoes. But she struggled
with gender dysphoria her whole life, came out to the world as a new person/sex
and then kinda disappeared ...it may take a little minute for some of us to get used to
her face with his awesome, amazing, incredible voice ...but I will

The Unruly Child self-titled album was the last one recorded up until this recent comeback. The "Tormented" album mentioned above consisted of demos for the 2nd Unruly Child album released after the fact as a Marcie Free album as a farewell to fans.
