He was my best friend at the time, and had been dating this same girl for years. We were eating lunch one day and he says "man I want to marry her so much! She makes me happier than I've ever been, and I just thought this morning about asking her to marry me". I asked him when he was going to do it. He said he wanted to do it that Friday night for some reason (can't recall), because it was some important night to them. He said if he didn't propose that night, then he would wait until the following year. He said he didn't have the money for the ring.
I asked him if I went with him and got him the ring, how long it would take for him to pay me back. At the time, he was a contractor, and he could literally make $3000-$4000 dollars off of one job in 2 or 3 days. He said he could pay me back within a couple of weeks at the latest! So we go to 3 or 4 jewelers that day until he found the perfect ring. That perfect ring was $2100.

I ended up getting a payment from him of $300 about a month later, and was so furious about the whole thing, that I didn't speak to him for nearly a year. I finally out of desperation asked him to give me at least HALF of what he owed, and I'd forget about the rest. He paid me half, and we have become friends again. We'll never be close like we were in the past, but we do hang out from time to time. I just can't fathom how people can have stuff like that hanging over them and it not bother them.

The worst part is that they broke up, and she wouldn't give us the ring back!

I may have been a complete dumbass, but I think that was my greatest act of kindness. Live and learn!
