The CD from Hell...

Postby Rip Rokken » Tue Dec 06, 2011 1:31 pm

Every morning I'm awakened by the blaring sound of a cheap clock radio cranked up to the point of distortion, tuned to a pop radio station that plays the same damned shit every single fucking morning. "Pumped Up Kicks", "I'll Drink To That" (or whatever it's called from Rihanna), that Stevie Wonder-sounding motherfucker with the trippy guitar groove ("I am in miserrryyyyyy"), and that same obnoxious Avril Levigne "short shorts" song they've been spinning relentlessly for two years now.

My little girl just came down and asked if I minded if she played her new CD in my sound system while she works out in the gym. Thought that was cute and gave her the go ahead. I don't know where she got this -- I think most of her CD's come included with McDonald's Happy Meals -- but this thing is a compilation of ALL those most hated, overplayed to the point of torture, current pop tunes. When I go to Hell, I fear Satan will have this disc waiting for me, ready to spin it non-stop... I could play TNT's "New Territory" and think I was in Heaven right about now.

Not sure what track it's on now, but I'm fully expecting to hear some Nickelback any moment now. Talk about a band who sold out quicker than a real GnR reunion would. They had one really worthy song ("I love your pants around your feet..."), then they jumped on the fast water slide into suckitude. This latest song that's being played is the final insult to injury... pure pop fluff, laced with Chad Kroeger's perfectly delivered gravely corporate growl. If I hear that song coming out of my jam box, I'm ripping the CD out and tossing it into the shredder. She'll get over it.

Is there a new one coming out?!? Man, you cannot seriously be dogging either of Don's solo efforts. "Up From The Ashes" was better than any Dokken CD, and "Solitary" was outstanding.

I still have fond memories of Don signing my copy at the Shadowlife concert here... he signed it large on the inside of the booklet, "To Rip - Thanks 4 the support! Don Dokken" He was actually surprised I had it, and sounded excited telling me about the songs and the musicians he worked with.

Too bad I gave that disc away in with my other idols in one of my religious epiphanies. I bought another one and Don signed it for me just this past May. but I had to hand it to a security staffer who took it into his dressing room, and Don signed it on the front cover with a black Sharpie... hello!?!? Just a lazy little scribble, barely resembling my other autographs. He's a shadow of his former self.

Because I'm drinking again, lol. I'm at the point where bitter-ass Red Hook Long Hammer IPA actually tasted damned good. I'm back to the Metal Sludge-era Rip Rokken again.

I agree to a point. I listen to the new stuff a little more now than in the past, and Like a lot of the tunes. But motherfucker, they play the shit out of them to the point where you could care less about EVER hearing them again. "Pumped Up Kicks", "Rolling in the deep", "Party Rock anthem" and anything by Bruno Mars ges played to the point of no return. On the other hand, they could play Pink all day and I would be a happy man.

Great tune! Figured You Out ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mm3w0Jq520w&ob=av2n

That one and Never Again are probably my faves of theirs. Such powerful (abuse) lyrics in Never Again ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxOV12hfv2o&ob=av2n

Agree on their new album too, what I've heard hasn't impressed me much either, hope they aren't turning soft. But I do like a lot of their older stuff. I love hard crunchy rock! And of course, proud as all hell for them. They are from a small town (Hannah) not far from Calgary here. They've paid their dues playing small town bars, great to see them Alberta boys blow up the charts and do so well.

lol, it was hilarious hearing them get the "golf clap" reception during the Thanksgiving day Packers-Lions game. Apparently, there was some mass protest campaign staged urging the NFL to choose another band for the game

My hats are off to anyone who makes it big... it's just sad to see what could have been a great rock band sell out so incredibly hard, and they deserve a golf clap from time to time, or no clap at all from any self-respecting rock fan. I mean, listen to this pop crap with silly vocal effects borrowed from hip hop... I wonder if Chad Kroeger even protested at all? I'd be so ashamed. The only way I could get thru a whole listen was to pick the one played over footage from The Avengers.

It's like an 80s guilty pleasure, e.g., Aha - Take On me. It's an objectively terrible song, but all but the most jaded listeners have to admit it's a littttttle bit catchy. I can at least understand why these guys sell records. That says more than most of the chart-toppers these days.

Disclaimer: I don't own a single Nickleback song, so don't get the wrong idea.
