Finally get to go see Toto!!

Postby G.I.Jim » Thu Aug 01, 2013 3:40 am

Toto's one of the few bands I love that I have never been able to see live. Just bought tickets today for the Atlanta GA show in a couple of weeks. WOO HOO!!! I've been watching all the concert footage out there from this year, and they sound amazing! :D I can't wait. Is anyone else from here going? It would be cool to meet some of you.

Are they any good without Bobby Kimball?

I saw them a couple times back when Joseph Williams was there originally and it was great. Not sure how they sound with him now.

I don't know why. They are missing the 3rd lead keyboard player from track 5 on the Toto IV record.

What you are seeing barely amounts to a tribute band.

I'm a Bobby fan, but this tour seems insane. While Bobby was there, you had canned BG vocals, lip synched lead vox Africa...now they are playing live and there is more of a group dynamic. Joe William's voice is the melodic comeback story of the year.

How do you figure? Joseph was one of the original (as well as one of the best) singers, along with David, Steve Porcaro, Lukather. Yeah, they're missing Jeff and Mike, but they do have some amazing replacements. How is this a tribute band???

Could not agree more! They sound freaking AMAZING this year!! I am more stoked to see them than I have been for any band in a LONG time. To me, I'm even more excited for this concert than the first time I saw Journey with Augeri in the mid 90's. At least this time I get to hear one of the best and original singers! I liked Augeri, but it was never the original. I do appreciate what he did however. SOOOOOO pumped!!! :D

Really cool, Jim. I've never had the opportunity to see Toto, although I've always wanted to. If they make it within driving distance of me I'm going. No hesitation....I'm fucking there! Enjoy yourself, have a great time and I'm a bit jealous! :D

Fahrenheit was the last album that I purchased by Toto. Was also the last time I was interested in the band (1987). Time flies, can't believe it was that long ago. I bought the Japanese release since that was where I was living at that time. I think it was on Sony. Still got it. Maybe I'll listen to it tonight for shits and giggles.

ME TOO!! ME TOO!!
Of the hundreds of shows I've attended over the decades, Toto is one of the bands I've not seen live. They're playing at this brand new, really, really nice casino/hotel here on Sept. 14th. Two very cool things about this show:
1. The casino/hotel is only 2 miles from my house! Yessss!
2. The venue only seats 1,400 and the way it's built, I think the furthest seat from the stage is only like 75 feet!  Nah, it's probably more than that but when you look at the pic of the venue, it looks pretty damned close!

Then, the following week it's REO for the wife and a week after that it's Rick Springfield, both at the same venue!

Here's the showroom at the new casino.

That actually looks like a nice venue, and is right near where I used to live in Arizona (Maricopa)...I'm seeing them in Jackson, CA...from what I can tell its standing room, 500 max...At least I'll be burnin' calories...

I had no idea bands played middle of nowhere towns like Jackson and Visalia. Toto has no other CA dates except these two towns far from population centers. Makes no sense at all. Doesn't look like I can go to any of these gigs or Vegas due to my work and gig schedule. Luke had no comment when I tweeted him about this "tour".

It's a VERY nice venue. The entire casino/hotel complex is gorgeous! Very posh and super expensive.
Yeah, standing for an entire show will def burn some calories! I was front row, center for 2 shows on Journey's 30th Anniv./Generations tour - those were 3 hour shows, standing the entire time. Don't know how many calories I burned but my legs and back were on fire the next day!

For reference... the casino/hotel is at the I-10 and Firebird Raceway exit. It's pretty freakin' big too! All 3 of the new casino/hotel projects are fairly big and very nice - especially Talking Stick Resort... it's spectacular! Some of the finer Scottsdale and Paradise Valley resorts pale in comparison.
How long ago did you move away from the Valley?

Yeah, I remember when I first moved to the state, the first place I stopped at was "Wild Horse Pass" - so it's the same place I think but that was in '04 and they've added onto it. I actually got the hotels mixed up - thought I was staying there, but was staying at the dumpy / generic San Marcos 'resort'. Imagine my surprise at the disparity! I moved out in '09, did my 5 years in the heat (also saw some UFOs, short sold a house, bought a car) Now in Northern Sacramento / Folsom CA area..

Ahhhh yes, the San Marcos Hotel. I live 1/2 mile from it. When I moved to the valley in '88, the San Marcos was still a very nice property. It was owned by Sheraton at that time and I took a job there as the Asst. Exec. Chef and worked there for almost 5 years before I got out of the food & beverage industry altogether. One of the perks for the resort's management staff was free, unlimited golf which was a big deal to me back then - I played as often as possible. One particular afternoon the conventions manager and I got put into a threesome with Alice Cooper who is an outstanding golfer (could've gone pro anytime he wanted to). Turned out, he likes to play the older courses here whenever possible because he likes the older tree growth and the feel of the older, smaller courses. He and I hit it off for some reason and subsequently ended up playing together at least a dozen more times over the years and shamed me with his scorecard each and every time!  So there's my story about the San Marcos combined with my brush with greatness!  Although, if you've lived in PHX for any length of time and you're into rock music, a meeting with Alice Cooper is pretty much bound to happen. He conducts his life just like any average, normal person - shops at Fry's and Target, goes to lots of spring training games, mows the grass at his awesome mansion next door to the Goldwater estate on Camelback Mountain, etc. Add to that he's a hands-on owner of his restaurant/bar, Cooperstown where he makes himself very accessible and after a while, you get pretty much used to running into him now and then.

Cool story, love me some Alice! But I wouldn't go across the street to see Toto. Well, maybe across the street and it was free! hehe

Yep!  Speaking of Christmas... It came early for me this year. I found a freaking amazing deal on a new keyboard and jumped on it. I bought a Korg Triton Extreme. They run from $1200 to $2000 of Craigslist, and I bought one for $750 with a case. I'm now back up to 3 boards. :D I had 5 at one point a few years back, but had gone down to just one. Now that I'm gigging again, it makes my life MUCH easier not having to do everything on one board.

I'm anal when it comes to my sounds, and now that I have the best sounds from Yamaha, Roland, AND Korg, I think I'm covered.
