The album ain't that good....

Is it because he's a Journey alum?

What gives with this hero worship for this man?

Danger Danger's 'Revolve' blows this Cd out of the water....and there was no mob scene claiming the sort of weird worship that W.E.T.'s is....weird.

I'll never, ever understand this phenomenon. Cd is average, at BEST.

Of course....it is mainly Eclipse and WOA influenced, but there's at least 3 tunes that would fit a JSS lead Journey.

Which 3?

The clips are good, not great, and enjoy the One Love video, catchy song. But masterpiece album? I don't know. I can think of very few albums I would call a masterpiece released in recent memory. And by the clips, Daughtry's new CD is better and it's no masterpiece, but a great album. But, to be fair, you can't go by clips. Wll wait and listen to the whole album.

It's not 100%, and not even close. It is good though, and better than a lot of what is released these days. You have to understand Andrew's ratings, and how they apply to your listening tastes. Personally, anything under about 90% isn't all that good to my ears as a general rule, barring a few instances where I might like something he doesn't care for or visa versa. If you read and listen to enough of what he reviews, you can figure out about where you would stand on a release between the rating mark and the description itself. The scores are WAY too high across the board (and he's admitted this), but they are generally consistent--and that's the major point.

As far as rating albums go, I'm not even sure I've ever heard a 95% album, let alone a 100% one.

Thank you :) And you are right... As far as 95-100% albums - I have a TON! You tend to get that over 25 years of collecting....I never got some folk saying that no album could ever be perfect. Sometimes I think that reflects someone looking too hard for perfection.

Thoughts?

Off the top of my head, these are 100% (or very close) albums:

Journey-Escape
Boston debut album
Bryan Adams-Reckless
Bon Jovi-Slippery When Wet and New Jersey (although I think there were a couple of mediocre songs on the NJ album which could prevent it from 100%)
Whitesnake self titled
Probably with some ridicule/not as popular as the others listed: Survivor - Vital Signs

I'm sure there are a few more...but only a few. Probably a Def Leppard and possibly Foreigner album back in the day would qualify.

Boston debut is definitely a 100%. All 8 songs consistently in rotation to this day on classic rock radio, all great songs, not a filler track on there.

Escape has plenty of filler and garbage (open arms)

Vital Signs is damn close for me too... an excellent album. If not 100%, a 98%

Of course....it is mainly Eclipse and WOA influenced, but there's at least 3 tunes that would fit a JSS lead Journey.

Which 3?

I would say:

One Love
My Everything
Invincible

I just can't see any of these working for journey, i hear a more grounded melodic JSS but not a journey-esque sound.

I don't get JSS's comment in interview: "Some of the songs sound like what Journey might have been had we remained working together,"

These songs were written by Sall and Martensson and it was their vision, not what Jeff might have written for or with Journey.

The way I read it, I think he just meant that the end results sound like what he envisioned his sound with Journey might have been. He's talking sound, not writing.

for me, radio airplay has ZERO to do with how good an album is. Promotion had everything to do with airplay, and just because management/label dropped the ball shouldn't affect how good an album is. There's also plenty of albums who made charts somewhere, but weren't even released in other countries. How do you rank that? I know this is twisting your point, but still...

Ehwmatt wrote:Escape has plenty of filler and garbage (open arms)

I'd add Dead or Alive and Lay It Down to that list also. OA is ok, but pales in comparison to Still They Ride/Mother Father.

Ehwmatt wrote:Vital Signs is damn close for me too... an excellent album. If not 100%, a 98%

See, I never viewed Vital Signs as anywhere near the peak of Survivor's career. Sure, some great songs, but Popular Girl might just be their worst song ever. The Search Is Over is ok, but not even close to their best ballad (Ever Since the World Began or Man Against the World blows it out of the water). When Seconds Count was better to me, and Premonition (the Japanese version with the uncut Summer Nights) is their best album.

Now, as far as some of my favorites (some you may have heard, others not)...using the higher scale here ;)

Survivor - Premonition (if you've only heard Vital Signs, this will be an eye-opener! Survivor didn't come close to sounding like this until Too Hot To Sleep. The Japanese version with the uncut Summer Nights is miles better than the US version)
Dare - Out of the Silence (maybe THE aor album...just stunning)
Magnum - On a Storyteller's Night / Wings of Heaven (you either get Magnum or you don't.....if you do, you don't get much better than this)
Cold Chisel - East / Circus Animals (very popular Australian rock band....completely different albums, and both near untouchable. Blues-based hard rock would be the best description, but that would be doing the band a considerable disservice)

near the 99% rating
Richie Sambora - Stranger In This Town....maybe cut River of Love and possibly Rosie. The best Bon Jovi-related album ever, and a tragedy that it didn't get any airplay

Ian Moss - Matchbook....Australian version of Stranger In This Town, but a bit more AOR. A couple of huge hits, and Don Walker is one of the best lyricists ever. Pretty Face is just ok, but the live version with the very extended guitar solo is miles better--and would move this to 100%.

There may be a few more that I've missed...

It's certainly worth the effort. Not much Bon Jovi in there, and it's much more blues with a bit of melodic rock/AOR, but the songs are outstanding with some great lyrics and a bunch of soul. His 2nd album, Undiscovered Soul, is quite good also, however in much more of a midwestern pop-rock vein. You will certainly come away with a new impression of him after listening to the Stranger album.

From another site....

"Ive just been reading over at melrock noticeboard the number of people slagging this album off as 'Jeff by numbers' 'AOR by numbers' etc etc.

Jesus Christ!

If our small community of fans cant appreciate a great melodic rock album such as this and get behind the artist, and stop whinging about digipacks (WTF is wrong with some people??!) etc, this scene is well and truly dead

Quite depressing really. "

It all comes down to opinion, really.....

but there is a certain sect of fans that like everything that is released. Probably because they are trying SO hard to make this genre survive, that they can't fathom a less than stellar outcome....

I don't think it's fair to say we all like everything that's released. That's not even true with JSS. I didn't get into the Redlist stuff at all. And his latest solo album was okay, but I like his harder rock music better. I just think this current album seems very melodic nature, harder rock which is what I like about Talisman, and from the clips it just sounds like the style of his music I will really enjoy. Even us fans have opinions too :)

Well I felt I was included in that group you were blaming for just worshiping everything JSS does. :P  And yeah, shutting up would be good
