Whatever. Fine. Play it tomorrow and get that shit off my tv. Fuck I hate this shit.

I actually watch a game, and the US gets a goal taken away because, well, I don't know why.....corruption perhaps? This sport is FULL of corruption.

This is what soccer needs to do... EPIC

Wimbledon 2010: Epic halted at 59-59 in fifth set
Wimbledon Championships
Venue: All England Club, London Date: 21 June - 4 July
Coverage: Live on BBC One and Two, HD, Red Button, BBC Sport website (UK only), Radio 5 live, 5 live sports extra; live text commentary online and on mobile phones; watch again on BBC iPlayer Full details of BBC coverage

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The duo will return to complete their match on Thursday
John Isner and Nicolas Mahut tore up the record books as their epic first-round contest at Wimbledon became the longest in tennis history.

The match was locked at 59-59 in the final set after 10 hours of play when it was suspended because of bad light.

The decision meant that, incredibly, the contest would go into a third day, having been called off at two sets all on Tuesday for the same reason.

It will resume on Court 18 on Thursday after two other singles matches.

The six-hour final set is already longer than any match ever played.

Isner (98) and Mahut (95) have also both smashed the previous record for the most aces, the 78 set by Ivo Karlovic in a Davis Cup tie in 2009.

The previous longest match was at the French Open in 2004, when Fabrice Santoro beat Arnaud Clement after six hours and 35 minutes.

The longest at Wimbledon was the famous battle between Pancho Gonzales and Charlie Pasarell in 1969, which took five hours 12 minutes and finished 22-24 1-6 16-14 6-3 11-9 to Gonzales.

There was no indication of the drama that was about to unfold when Isner and Mahut resumed on Tuesday afternoon locked at two sets all.

But fans quickly crammed into court 18 - capacity 782 - as word spread about the historic contest and every possible vantage point outside was taken.

Meanwhile, over on Centre Court, Venus Williams took just 25 minutes to wrap up the first set against Ekaterina Makarova.

Mahut from France had his first break points of the entire set at 50-50, but Isner, 25, dug deep into his reserves to save both.

The 6ft 9in American had two match points himself at 33-32 and another at 59-58, all of which Mahut managed to fend off.

Prior to that the set's only break point came with Isner, the number 23 seed, leading 10-9 and a point from victory.

606: DEBATE
Should Wimbledon introduce a fifth set tie-break?
Towards the end, the umpire's voice was going, rallies were collectors' items and the scoreboard was broken because it couldn't cope with the alien numbers.

Just after 2110 BST, Mahut complained that he was having difficulty seeing the ball and the decision was taken to suspend play.

Initially the crowd, desperate to see the match through to its conclusion, booed and chanted "We want more!" but as the players left they were given a huge standing ovation - a fitting tribute to the two gladiators.

Isner was out on his feet, although he would have been buoyed with the news from the referee's office that his doubles match with Sam Querrey, scheduled to take place on Court 10 had been cancelled.

While Isner was almost delirious, Mahut, 28, looked remarkably fresh, perhaps boosted by the knowledge he had won a match with Britain's Alex Bogdanovic in qualifying 24-22 in the final set.

Before they headed off for a well-earned rest, the players were grabbed by the BBC's Phil Jones for a final word on an astonishing day.

Mahut said: "We're fighting like we have never done before. We'll come back tomorrow and see who is going to win this match. Everyone wants to see the end."

Isner added: "He's serving fantastic, I'm serving fantsatic. Nothing like this will ever happen again."

The eventual winner will play Thiemo De Bakker of the Netherlands in the next round, who was involved in another marathon battle with Santiago Giraldo, before coming through 16-14 in the final set - although that match lasted a mere four hours and six minutes.

In a week of records, Novak Djokovic's first-round match against Olivier Rochus was the latest-ever finish at Wimbledon, while Taylor Dent's 148mph serve against Djokovic in round two was the fastest recorded at the All England club.

After his match against Dent had finished, Djokovic was asked about the Isner-Mahut match and said all the players were watching it in the locker rooms.

He added: "I'm amazed they could both hold their serve that comfortably all day. It's unbelievable. Maybe they should have agreed to play a tie-break at 50-all!"

Six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer added: "I love this! I don't know if I was crying or laughing. It was too much."

No. Rooney is an OK striker and one of the top players at club level but he has never done ANYTHING at international level to warrant a world class tag.

I don't understand why Joe Cole hasn't really featured in the team yet. OK, he got 15 minutes on the pitch in the last game of the group stage, but that's not nearly enough to get into the rhythm of things. Of all the players in the current squad he is the ONLY player who performed well at the last world cup (ie is proven at international level), and is probably the most creative player we have.

Exactly, and I asked the purpose of this earlier in the thread, no response ...soccer fans = rude ...no use for this sport or trying
to learn about it!! :D

Unfortunately, as is the case with most threads like this, genuine questions often get lost in the drivel, sarcasm, and wisecrack one liners of other posters. By the time we Europeans (who probably represent the majority of soccer fans here) wake up there are pages of such posts and to be honest, if I see a thread generally being derailed by a flurry of such posts I don’t bother trawling through it. It’s not being rude, just getting on with life.

As to your question, when it gets to the knockout stages there will be tie-breakers in the form of extra time or even penalties. However, there is no need for that in the group stages, which is like a mini league. What purpose would it serve? As long as there is a clear cut winner and runner up to progress from the group stage, forcing those early matches to have tie-breakers is superfluous.

thanks for the answer Marty.... ties though are still like kissing your sister...but if they had tie breakers... during these early games... I think it would still benefit every team that works so hard... to come away with maybe 2-3 wins and a bunch of ties kind of defeats the purpose of playing to win doesnt it???

I think this match has broken almost every record there is in tennis. Longest match, longest set, most aces (both players have absolutely smashed the previous world record), longest period of continuous play etc. I also heard somewhere (correct me if I’m wrong) that the BBC commentator, with his first live broadcast, is also now in the record books with the longest single match commentary.

One hundred and eighty one games played (excluding the two tie breaks) and only three breaks of serve. Incredible.

Drama in the World Cup too, as holders Italy fall at the first hurdle. Their exit, after defeat by Slovakia today means that for the first time both the winner and the runner up from the previous World Cup (Italy and France) have both failed to get through the group stage.

I would agree, if the competition was purely a knockout competition (as it used to be in the past). However, nowadays with TV rights and advertising etc it is in the organisation's best interest to keep teams interested in the competition for as long as possible, hence the group stages. Once this stage is over the real knockout competition begins and those teams remaining will generally start raising their performances.

I couldn't stand Cristiano Ronaldo when he played for Man United but the guy has so much skill, he creates their own luck.

Another thing that makes absolutely no sense is offsides...the whole point is to beat your man. If offsides was more like hockey I could accept it. Put in a line, don't go by opposing players positions....another reason soccer is gay.

Just cause you dont understand the rule clearly..... The offside rule basically MAKES you run harder to beat your man instead of camping outside the opposing teams goal and waiting for the ball..
You wanna talk about weird rules that dont make sense, the ENTIRE football rules from points to yards to touchdown and safety and goalfield, is all weird rules, in a sport where you get more commercial break than watching the actual sport.

And since when does yellow card = they need to toughen up. Would you say the same if a hockey game ended up with 9 penalties? Didnt think so, ;)

Your argument makes ZERO fucking sense. The offsides in soccer is ridiculous. Like S2M said, make it a line like hockey. You wouldn't have players camping outside the goal line with a permanent offsides line.

Also, yellow cards DOES equal pussies. IFor every legitimate injury, you have 15 fake injury/flops. Guys going down grabbing their ankles like they've been slayed with a machete, when in reality, they clipped an opposing players shoelace. It's not me being sarcastic either, it was right on tv in front of you. You saw it. It's despicable that a "sport" allows this shit to happen. These guys are fucking women, fucking pussies, plain and simple. My kid will never see the soccer field. That is complete garbage.

PS- Hockey penalties are actual penalties, ie, obstruction, slashing, roughing, fighting....not faking, faking and more faking.

And I'll say it now, as bad as the NBA is, and it is hard to watch, I would rather watch thugs than smelly Euros faking injuries. Soccer ought to call a penalty on players who fake it...but it won't because the referees are pussies themselves.

Hockey has fake penalties too big boy. And the offside rule makes perfect sense if you have actually played the game, youd understand it.
Also, I can guarantee you that your kid will eventually play soccer as it is the most popular sport in schools these days... ;) I find it hard to believe that you would be a strict father and not let your kid enjoy the sport he enjoys just cause daddy is too stubborn to understand and enjoy it

Yep, and when a player dives, it's 2 minutes in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct. By the way, only the pussy euros fake dives. The North American players never dive.

It does, LOL? Hell, just keep you read defensemen back as far as the goalie. There would be no way to ever score, not that they score anyway.

It's popular because it takes a single ball and 20 kids on each side can play school soccer. It's free babysitting for the yard teacher. Kids don't enjoy that shit. They'd much rather play football or basketball or baseball, but those sports are more advanced than the shit that is soccer. You guys who continuously make the claim about the "most popular sport" makes me sick. It's the most popular because ANYONE can play it. You don't have to be good. Just run around in circles screaming like a fucking banshee; that's all it is.
