I think like Eddie, Alex has NOT improved..at all...but that happens when you stop playing music.

Alex Van Halen could plays circles around Steve Smith.

And Steve Smith has no business being thought of in the same league as Neal Peart.

Whaddya expect from a delusional Journey fan.

Chalk it up to being a Journey fan if that makes you feel better...but Steve Smith is one of the best drummers out there. And he easily outshines AVH! Now I, like many, rank Neal Peart as probably the BEST rock drummer out there. But I think Smitty is probably 2nd! When you add the jazz chops that he has you can't touch him. And if you were to ever read any of his interviews, you would see the kind of work he puts into constantly improving his craft. As stated by Deano, AVH has not really done ANYTHING to improve on his talent.

Isn't that guy the jazz studio session drummer who used to play on the CHEERIOS commercials back in the 70's? No offence...

Actually, listen and watch Steve Smith first. Like it or not, among his peers he still considerd a complete drummer, and considerd at the top of the game. Alot of the great drummers people talk about look up to Steve Smith, so alittle repect to the guy.

Do some research first, you'll find the answers.

Paddywagon and Darwin Nebraske are off their collective rockers. Idiots, plain and simple.

Hell, ask AVH, and he'd tell you he isn't at the same level as Smith..

Uh um O.K. Neal Peart and Steve Smith are in the same league dude. Portnoy mentioned at a clinic a few years ago that he's not even close to guys like Smith, Chambers, Weckl, Cobham ect... So get your facts straight and do some research!! You must be a metal head.

Not to be a Journey homer, I wouldn't be off in saying Ansley Dunbar, and Deen Castronovo, are both better than AVH as well....and I love Alex..Not trying to start a war, just speaking the truth.

Castronovo can flat BRING it. Speed, power and can sing lead while doing it. He's got it all.
Alex has a weird, unique sound. Doesn't have Deen's fastball but he's the only drummer for VH.

AK, have you seen the newest Rush DVD "R30"... specifically, Peart's solo? It is absolutely amazing. He's simply the best, in my opinion.

I agree. I haven't had a chance to see the DVD yet, I've just listened to the CD. I saw it in person during the tour though. It's the only concert you will go to where people run back FROM the bathroom when the drum solo starts. Nobody MOVES, they just stare in adoration!

That's the best part of a Rush concert...30,000 air drummers.

Cool, then at least you've seen it. I've seen them 5 times... been great each time.

Having seen Steve Smith, Neil Peart, and Alex Van Halen all live within about 1 and a half years, out of those 3 here is my list best to worst

1. Steve Smith (was amazing with Buddy's Buddy when I saw him, and a very nice approachable guy after the show 2nd best drumme I've saw live)

2. Neil Peart - Very solid performance, 3rd best drummer I saw live.

3. Alex Van Halen - Solid, nothing spectacular, but kept good pace and when teamed with Mikey added a solid backbone to the music.

The best drummer I've saw live was hands down Virgil Donati. The man was a monster!

OMG yes! Me and 28,454 men. The thing I've noticed every time I've been to a Rush concert is the male to female ratio. When there is a line outside the men's bathroom and the women can breeze in and out like the wind, that's unique! Ladies! Need to find a man? Go to a Rush concert! lol!

That's hilarious, the ratio thing. I guess you're right. It's kind of like being in a STAR TREK convention, huh? Er... not that... I would ... KNOW... anything about that! Too bad ole Geddy doesn't have the Russell Crowe look!

Now I remember why I've been going to Rush concerts since the early 1980's!!! LOL I LOVE seeing Rush live, one of the best concerts that I've ever seen!! Always a GREAT show. I try to never leave my seat during any concert, I never want to miss any part of the show!!

Dream Theater is exactly the same ratio - LOL The last time I saw Dream Theater I swear it was one female for every 100 men, it was GREAT!!! I can't remember seeing so many hot looking guys at a concert either!!

Deano's forgotten more about rock music than a lot of people will ever know... he's perfectly qualified to opine on this matter and I expect a full schooling of this butt hole ( ) post haste.

Look, the title of this thread is Boring rthym sections. I said if Castronovo couldn't sing, Journey would be amongst the most boring. Then out of control VH fan rushes in with maybe the most idiotic post of the year saying "AVH could play circles around Steve Smith." Uh, that's not subjective; Smith is just better, no big deal. I love VH. I am not trying to get a Journey v VH war going, but wouldn't hesitate to debate that anytime. I am willing to say Alex would probably agree that Smith is superior. As for Peart, who can argue him? He is amazing, flatout.

NIG and 13 brought up Castronovo. He is solid, but not close to Smith.

Last time I checked this was the VH forum, Rock'n Duncecap...why don't you take a JOURNEY back to the JOURNEY forum??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, you, you, turdy meanie! Or should I say big cockmeat eatin motherfucker. How's the taste? Need some jizz to chase it down? You sound so fuckin stupid, making comments like AVH can play circles around Smith. Go back and read the entire thread. I never bashed VH. I am a VH fan. I have seen VH. I smack my own too. I am the harshest Journey critic on these boards.

The whole point of this thread was "Boring Rhythm Sections"...You're the F'ing Tard who brought Steve Smith into this VH thread...and brought along your "Girls" to chime in!!!!

So by not bringing in ANY other rythm section, basically VH would be the most boring? I just said Journey doesn't set the world afire with it's bassist; and if Deen couldn't sing better than Journey's own lead singer, they(Journey), would win the award for most boring. M Anthony has some stage precense; Ross Valory just stands there and squirts water at people.

Go back and read the thread. These two bands should be allies on the war against Gay pop....no need to battle.

You were the first one to bring Steve Smith's name up...

You prefaced your comment by saying, "no offence, Paddy..."

Don't throw flames and then sit back and pretend you didn't...

Your whole purpose in writing that comment was to start a "war"...

DARWIN was the one who said AVH could play circles around Steve Smith - I was saying that AVH is often underrated...
