Nobody outside of the Journey world thought Perry was any sort of "frontman." Singer? Yes ... the best ever. He's the reason so many people made fun of Journey. He was dorky, faggy and feminine.

This is one of the rare occasions I love to agree with you :)

And I'm not being biased here and I'll tell you why. I've gotten into fucking I don't even know how many arguments about Journey and Perry. They're my favorite band ever and he's the person I consider the greatest singer ever. However, I was always slammed with someone laughing at me and "Journey??? Steve Perry???? That guy was a fag!!!" That has always been the perception.

The perception still prevails today. Ask my brother. He's only 3 years younger than me but in his world Journey wasn't and is still not cool....but, on a recent visit to his house, I opened a chest next to his CD rack and guess what was in there? Yep, almost every Journey album. He is vocal about how much the band sucks but also a closet fan.

What's wrong with being effeminate? That's one thing that really annoys me; the fact that men who are feminine are automatically thought of as weak or freaky or gross or whatever. There's nothing wrong with effeminate men, just like there's nothing wrong with masculine women (Though masculine women seem to not get nearly as much flack for being who they are). Nor is there anything wrong with men and women who go along with stereotypical/common gender presentation. *ahem*/my rant of the day

For the record, I think Steve is a fine frontman. Perhaps not the *best*, but definitely good. Whenever I see youtube videos of him in concert he always has this sincerity and genuine nature in his performances that really makes them good. He seems to get lost in the song at times, and I like that.

Yeah, Richard Simmons and Perez Hilton seem really normal.

Not at all ... if you wanna be manless and a regular at the Pink Taco Cafe.

He seemed to get lost in 1987, then again in 1994 and finally in 1996.

Hahahaha!!! That's what's cool about this forum. Somebody can say something like that w/o the entire populace flipping its collective wig and calling the poster a homophobe and all kinds of other nonsense. Years ago on another forum, the topic of Pete Townshend being arrested for logging into a pedo website got brought up. I dropped a line about NAMBLA and a bunch of peeps flew into a rage. The webmaster-mod guy even emailed me, chastising me because he got complaints from people. I said whatever.

Until reading this list, I never thought about how much "makeup" played a role in helping ROCK AND ROLL performers be considered the best frontmen.

I went through the same comments about Perry with my buds, but hell, at least he didn't have to wear frickin' makeup.

Make up makes up part of what is known as showmanship.

that head-bobbing mechanical dance thing that he does should qualify for a place even if nothing else does. Just about as distinctive as Bob Catley's (Magnum) swaying arm gestures--which can't be properly described in words, but probably are an equal mixture of symphony conductor and a wizard chanting spells. Garrett (and Catley) certainly walk to their own beat.

Yep, Rolie nailed it when he said 'this guy is a crooner'.
Best ever singer? Yeah, maybe.
Greatest frontman? Nah, decent at best.

And remember, a journalistic trick is to use the term 'greatest', which is subjective. This list isn't 'best singer' or 'most technically proficient vocalist'. 'Greatest' has many angles & opinions. Who is the leader of the band, on & off stage? Who's the media darling? Who creates the most attention so that consumers know the band? Yes, Perry may fit that category, but he's not nearly notorious, if at all, than the guys in this list.

Again, it's 'greatest' ...according to the writer.

Well, something is wrong with that list...or with me. I don't know half of the guys there  !!! If SP seemed dorky, some of these guys look scary weird.

Agreed...but, it's more than just the "weirdness" of his moves, etc. He has a PRESENCE about him...a "POWER" to his delivery. If you were fortunate enough to have witnessed Midnight Oil "live"...you know what I mean.

Incredible band. Incredible "frontman".

I can accept Mick behind Elvis but Mercury??? Come on, typical agenda-driven list.

never seen him in person, but I've seen several live videos. I agree that he certainly has a presence.
