Let's see now... gee, maybe fight in World War I & II from the start, instead of waiting a couple of years to see how it was going to pan out, then swan in at the end and claim all the credit like the USA did?

though his statement was ignorant I wouldn't say the US takes all the credit. Any WWII movies I've seen show the US soldiers fighting as well as British and others. They had to wait for a reason that involved us. As soon as they had it they were in. The only reason that Germany lost that war from the things I've watched and learned from a husband obsessed with studying that war, is that Hitler got greedy. He divided up his army instead of keeping it full force in one direction and he should have worked faster on that atomic bomb. That's only a simplistic view, but no one country alone won that war. It was full of world wide Heroes and mistakes on the other side.
I know, hon, it was sarcasm on my part, because I do get tired of
some Americans talking about how 'we' rescued France and 'you'd be speaking German if it wasn't for us' - and to then have someone ask 'why should Canada have a Memorial Day'... well, it bugs me. I'm an Australian; our national day of remberance is Anzac Day, which we share with New Zealand, Anzac standing for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The day is the anniversary of Anzac troops landing in Gallipoli; that campaign is a huge part of our heritage and our sense of national identity, and fighting alongside us were the Canadians. When it comes to remembering our fallen soldiers, the people who defended our freedoms, Canada always stood with Australia and New Zealand, without hesitation, from the outset. So I guess I take someone implying Canada has no right to a day of rememberance for fallen soldiers pretty personally; it's like someone telling me Australia has no right either.
Besides which, I believe Canada is the only country to have 'officially' defeated America in a war, and on US soil too!

Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!
