Let's all move to Australia. Andrew can be our leader, and we will be his people. No more gulf oil spills or terrorist threats to deal with. Andrew will provide us with shelter, clothing, food, alcohol, and weed, and we will listen to melodic rock day and night. In exchange, we will write endless concert reviews and album reviews until his website is the largest one on earth.

And they all lived happily ever after!

  I wondered who would be the first... :D

Well considering you lazy assed fuck, that I have been slaving like Kutafuckingkentay overnight, you should be first on this.

What the hell are you talking about homo?

I was kidding about you be a lazy assed fuck, but was saying that I worked like a slave all night, or I would have dropped the Midnight Oil reset on here first. :)

Hell, I can BE lazy now! I have a guy enlisting today, and this enlistment completes my biggest goal in recruiting. I have always wanted to earn an Eagle award, and after today, I will have earned it! To earn an Eagle, you have to exceed your yearly mission by 125%. I've come close in the past, but this is the first time in 9 years that I've earned it. It's a big-ass bronze eagle statue, and you also get an Army Commendation medal. I'm not a big person on medals, and don't have a "Love Me" wall in my office, but I have just wanted that damn eagle for years.

Now that I've achieved it, they won't let me put another person in until October. I'll basically be screwing off until then (and harrassing all of you in here!).

Sorry you're having to work nights Deano, that sucks! I've done it many times, and don't envy you at all. It always messed up my whole damn sleep/eat schedule, and I always felt exhausted! :?

Kangaroo is delicious! Possibly the best tasting red meat around.

As for the immigration thing - nothing to do with water. In very simple terms, you need to provide evidence that you can financially support yourself if you want to emigrate to Australia, so either family already here who will take care of you, or an employer with a guaranteed job (one that they have shown they are unable to hire an Australian for), or you are a professional in an industry that we have a shortage of, or you have sufficent money that you will be able to live off that (I believe it's actually half a million, but don't quote me on that.)
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

'Illegal' refugees is a huge political hot potato at the moment. Nope, no food stamps, but there is unemployment benefit, disability pensions, full time tertiary students get an allowance (infuriatingly, it's less than unemployment benefit, and actually less than you can live on), and I think we still have single parent pensions. The health care system works pretty well; Medicare means everyone has access to free health care; health insurance means you jump queues for elective surgery, essentially, and can pick and choose which hospital you go to (including numerous private ones.) The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme is probably the best thing about it; there are severe limits on how much pharmaceutical companies can charge for medication here, and life saving drugs are government funded. When Mamma was receiving treatment for cancer, she paid the first $300 per year for the medication she needed, after that the government picked up the tab.

The concept of food stamps is one of those cultural differences between the US and Australia/Britain that leave me bewildered.

They're not stamps anymore. What is given to the recipient is a sort of ATM card that they use at the grocer. Not everything can be purchased with this card. Milk, bread, things like that will go on the card but anything like alcohol, cigarettes, different types of snack foods, etc, will be rejected by the software programmed into the cash register system or what ever it's called.

Ok, that kind of makes sense. It just seems like a contradiction in some ways; I understand why it's done that way, I understand the logic, but it seems to go against all those ideas I have about Americans treasuring their freedoms, like freedom to buy what they choose. Just something I'm never going to be able to wrap my head around - like disenfranching people from the vote.

Of course you can buy what ever you want. With your own money. Food stamps are one form of federal assistance aimed more at unwed mothers so that they can provide essential foods for their children. There are actual checks that are sent to welfare recipients which can be spent anyway they wish, however there is a five year cap on the total benefit, so you can not theoretically be on the dole forever.

Hey, like I said, I understand the logic, it's just one of those culturally different things that is very alien to me.

You have to look at the difference in population also. 300 million people might change the cultural mindset of a lot of countries.

Just the amount of government employees alone in the U.S. dwarf the size of many countries total populations, I think it's over 15 million even with all the job cuts and such.
Small countries have the luxury of running themselves as a giant corporation but that only works up to a certain point before the Bureaucracy becomes to much for one entity to handle.

So the first picture of the big ugly-ass snake probably not the right way to begin.

When I was in High School I looked into moving to Aus for college. There was a deal where they would pay for your schooling as long as you remain in the country for X amount of time after working in your field!

Oh please. Peter and the boys were UNREAL in a "live" setting. Take a poll...anyone who actually has seen the Oils knows what I am talking about.

Pure, shear, ENERGY! The bands you list aren't even in the same STRATOSPHERE as Midnight Oil.

Um dude - I've seen the Oils play live more than a few times. I've also seen a shit load of other Aussie bands play live. No doubt, Midnight Oil had some serious stuff going on, but to say they are the best Aussie band live simply ain't true. Fan-bloody-tastic, yes. Best live vibe - no, not by a long shot.

Ummmm....like....ummm....dudette...ummm....like I've seen The Oils more than you...ummm....like....and....uhhhh....dudette....like....I KNOW they kick-ASS over the bands you listed.

Word.

It's called an EBT card, meaning Electronic Bank Transfer card, and it is essentially a credit card for food furnished by the state. Now I see these all the time at my store, however, Don, there are two sides to it; there is a food side and a money side. Most that come through the line have 450.00 available in food and 400.00 in cash, and yes, they pay for the edible stuff with the food part, and then get cash back on the money side, and proceed to buy smokes and beer. Disgusting.

And then there are the people( and seedy vendors) who will pay you a percentage of cash for your 'food part'. Like 50%...so they'll give you $200 on cash for your $400 in food....there's a scam for everything...

I remember the scam in my high school days where you would go into a Chess King, Merry Go Round, or Dejaiz and purchase something...then return the next day with friends and the receipt...and while your friends were busy asking BS questions to the employee, you were grabbing the same item off the rack and asking for your money back....of course a more ingenuous one was sewing one of those metal security things inside your jacket, pants, or whatever....then walking through the security portal....after enough times of explaining you had pins in your leg the employee would ignore future security sounds...and them you could basically walk out with any CD you wanted.....

One helluva frontman! Definitely missed. I'm jealous Drew, sooooo many great tunes, one of my faves live (love the heavy bass intro, LOL I'm such a vocal/bass gal. :) Just give me great vocals and bass/drums (rhythm) and I'm happy  ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beimxl2iOug

How do you know you've seen them live more often than me? Do you have some magic gig calculator that tells you this shit? How many times have you seen the Hoodoo Gurus play live, or Mental As Anything? Do you even know of any other Aussie bands? I know fuck all about you, or your experiences, so I won't presume to tell you what you have or haven't done. I don't agree with your opinion, you don't have to agree with mine. I have a few other opinions about you that you also probably won't agree with.

Sadly, never saw INXS live, so won't presume to comment on how they compare to the Oils in a live setting. But Michael certainly danced with more finess than our honourable Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts.

Wow...guess you "told me" then. And you used a "big person" cussword too!

And yes...I have seen many other Aussie bands. I also have a calculator that told me that I have seen M.O. more times than you. 5 to 4.

Good match though... 8)
