I would love to go, but teacher pay does not excede school loans and bills. *sigh* I just wished I could go to CA so Dan can visit his brother. Not close to SF......much the pitty. Maybe next year. I guess I would be a total tourist at the beautiful spots........I love that pic above, it would be wonderful to see such a thing in person. Cyndy you would have to give me directions........but if your in Arkansas (yeah right) I would stear you the right way. I have been to LA and Long Beach. I was born in LA. My dad used to drag race back in the day, and he never lost a race. :D

He used to tell me about Lumbard St. Is that the name? Worlds most crooked street. :D

That's a pretty pic...and, the yellows & greys. Love San Francisco but bridges freak me out...I close my eyes (no, I'm not the one driving!) and pray...I think those of us who live with earthquakes know what I mean. I do love the little Moon Bridge in Golden Gate Park...the coolest park I have ever been in - walked from one end to the other.

lombard st is overrated. everyone imagines they'll see something like the first pic below. that was probably taken a distance away, with a telephoto lens from a tall building. the second pic is what you'd see from the base of the street. driving down the street isn't much fun, as you'd be creeping down it at a snails pace after idling & creeping in line for 3 blocks. it's best to take the hyde st cable car line, which passes right by lombard. you can also see lombard at a distance from the top of coit tower.

btw, lombard is not the crookedest st. vermont st is crookeder.

i'm guessing that the golden gate bridge would be one of the safest places to be in a quake. it's built to sway & not much can fall down on you. in a moderate quake, i'd rather be there than downtown, where chunks of building & panes of glass could come raining down.

FLOWERS
Be sure to wear them in your hair.

CABLE CARS
Either get on the Cable Car or get on the sidewalk. Dawdling in the street will get your ass run over.

While on the sidewalk, waiting for a Cable Car, don't block the entire width of the sidewalk with your brood. I've lost count of how many times I've either had to walk out onto the street or ask people to move, so i could pass through.

Remember that this is not an amusement park ride. Do not go, "WOOOOOO!!!" when you come around a curve. It makes you look like a stupid American tourist. I notice that Europeans are more polite & don't do this. A worse offense than "WOOOOOO!!!" is singing Xmas carols. Don't. Do. It.

DIRECTIONS
If you whip out a map & a little asian girl suddenly shows up & says, "Are you lost? Do you need directions?" That's probably me.

UNION SQUARE
Enjoy the free wi-fi.

OTHER
Don't pee in my doorway.

i may add to this list as i think of more suggestions.

Also : Bring a jacket or sweater. It's freezing at night, even in July. And the taxi cab drivers are insane drivers.

You got THAT shit right sister! I thought for SURE that I was GOING TO FUCKING DIE one night!!! This dude was hauling ASS down those streets, and weaving in and out of traffic. It's like he was trying out for a stunt driving position on the next smokie and the bandit movie! I swear to God that I think the tires left the road one time.   I could NOT get out of that fucking car quick enough.

Same here. I went and spent a month in Lindsay with my grandmother one summer when I was 16, and we took the Amtrak to Oakland, and a cab to SF. The cabbie actually went up on the grass to get around some traffic at one point. We both thought it was our last day on earth. Crazy driver.

One late evening a friend and I were walking around in Sydney, Australia. I soon became sort of disorientated and for a little bit I thought I was actually walking around in San Francisco. To me the climate and structure of the buildings and streets reminds me of some places in San Francisco. I've been to dozens of big cities around the world and Sydney is the only one that reminds me of San Francisco more than any other.

Thanks Cyndy.........I have an old VHS tape that I taped off MTV where Neal was coming down lombard st. on his motorcycle.........He did not zoom right down it either.
I guess most places have their tourist attractions. I think what struck my husband about Arkansas was how plush and green it is here. I told him this is a greenhouse.......that is why it is so humid here. Why do we drink SWWEET Tea? Because it is so hot here in the summer you sweat the instant you step out of your house! LOL! I think your painted lady houses are beautiful, and the cable cars are cool. Nice city Cyndy. :D

We ALL screamed!! And then died laughing!! And what made the laughter worse was that you let out a "fuck you" to the guy as you screamed like a girl   I have no idea why we didn't think it was odd that there was a bush on the cement. And then to look up and see the guy had over 30 people watching us waiting for our reaction to him  And then to find out when i got home, via youtube, how famous the guy is and he does this all day everyday for money  I WISH I could have found a video of us. We had to be the funniest because we ALL screamed loud  And if I recall, you DID tip the guy because you felt bad that you screamed that "fuck you"  I still love that story

Every time we've driven down this street it was stacked solid with cars all the way up to the top. Took us something like ten minutes just to drive down it. I'd hate to live on that street, I'd get so tired of seening constant car traffic day in and day out all the time. I would be like living in a house on the grounds of an amusement park or something.....fun at first but eventually getting very old.

Ahhh San Fran.

I've been dying to visit for years. I've been to San Diego (yawn) and I've been to L.A. 3 times... so San Fran is definitely the next big Cali city I want to visit!! It's now been bumped twice on my "big city" list. A bunch of friends and I did a big trip the year we all turned 30 - I voted for San Fran, and they all vetoed it - they wanted New Orleans... so that's where we ended up. I put it back on the list as "definitely the next city I visit"... ended up hitting L.A. for the third time instead.

Every time I see something about San Francisco on the travel channel, it makes me want to get on a plane immediately. So beautiful!!

I wouldn't want to live on that street either for the tourist who drive down it all day and into the night. It's quite the street to drive down and stop and turn and stop and turn until you reach the street below. It's beautiful but unless I personally lived on the street I don't think I'd drive stop and turn again just to say I drove it.

i would have loved to have seen that!

lora & i have amused ourselves & puzzled the tourists by NOT reacting to the bush man. we'll be having a conversation (to show that we're not deaf) as we're walking by that area. when the bush leaps out & yells at us, we don't flinch or look at him or pause the conversation. the crowd of tourists don't know what to think & it leaves this weird tension in the air. we walk around him as if he's just a bush.

Best city evar.
Been twice can't wait to go back.

My dad and I drew some nervous looks when we re-enacted the torture scene from Dirty Harry at Kezar Stadium as I laid down at 15 yard line and he kept standing on my leg pointing an imaginary gun going "WHERE'S THE GIRL?"

PS Dan is right about the nighttime freakshow and the bums.
Per capita, and I'm Philly born and bred SF is leading the league in bums.

Still love that place though.

They are still looking for the missing people...............it happened in the middle of the night with no warning. Children died....so sad. Flash flood warnings can happen so quickly, and can be more devistating than a tornado. It is a pretty state. Not a lot of people and buildings, more nature. We are the Natural State. People go to the rivers here a great deal during the summer. Things like this are rare but they happen. :(

This is what it normally looks like........must be a fall or winter pic. Trees usually are plush this time of year.
