Yeah...and on that list the USA is the most populated, meaning greater tax base...most potential for government spending out of control - another CON of Fair Tax...if uncle Sam doesn't learn to reel it in this proposed system won't work....also, I think there is a hidden agenda here...if consumption is taxed I don't see quite the push for illegal alien reform....just sayin.

Theres a fairly strong argument that a progressive tax system is a built-in mitigating control against run away economies (in either direction). Take a high level econ class (while ignoring the rest of the Keynsian bullshit, and you'll see what I mean).

Even though this is hardly the scenario to discuss right now, you don't want an economy blazing along at a massive pace. It's just as unhealthy as an economy regressing (like we currently have)...the progressive tax system is a built-in stop-gap. When things are shitty, and incomes are low for people, they have to pay less.....meaning they have more income for investment into GDP. When things are great, they pay a little more, and don't pour as much money into the GDP....hence keeping things 'tempered'

While the pure conservative in me scoffs at this...the fact of the matter is that you want this sorta thing to prevent an economy from purely hitting the shitter in bad times or blazing out of control in very good times.

A flat tax doesn't provide this natural stopgap that I'm talking about.

Here's the problem with the current system......the progressive tax (and I don't mean progressive...like the socialists like the cvnt of the house or the dictator in the white house), but more as in 'stair stepped' we have is NOT fairly distributed. Just like the AMT tax isnt. The AMT tax was designed to capture only the hyper-rich when it was firs created....but congress has refused to adjust it for inflation....and as a result, people who are NOT rich (and that includes people who make 100-300k per year) get slammed with it....and that's not right.

But getting back to the current progressive brackets...they are NOT distributed properly. Obama likes to refer to people making 250k as the ultra rich. I defy anyone making that kind of money in NYC or San Francisco to claim they are 'ultra rich' it's laughable.

The tax system is broken because the brackets don't match society......the problem, however...is that if they matched society.......the government would NOT get the income it needs to survive.

I sugests a better fix to the tax system is to re-align the tax brackets so that they match society......and cut government in half.....simple.

There isn't a socialist/liberal that would agree to that. Where else would they get their free-ride?

That's the problem.

Suggesting a fair tax isn't going to solve the entitlement system, the unfairness of the current progressive brackets or the outlandishly over-expanded government.

Let's focus on the problems first...before applying solutions that wont fix shit!

Agreed.

Very interesting.

By the way, I was a "no" vote.

The Loons have 3 windows open right now:

-The first is a Google search for "Steve Perry's view on the tax system" ... so they know how to answer.

-The second is Hostess.com.

-The third is Fan Asylum, which they've been logged into non-stop since 1996, along with the incessant need to refresh it every couple of minutes like Desmond had to on the TV show "LOST."

Because it will make going to the fair far too expensive. Maybe they should tax theme parks, like Disneyland, where it is already far too expensive.

I don't think there's any hidden agenda with the Fair Tax. It doesn't have enough support amongst politicians right now because it would effectively take power away from politicians because special interests would have a much harder time lobbying for tax breaks because there wouldn't be ANY tax breaks. As far as illegal aliens go, they send a lot of their money back to Mexico anyway and they don't really spend a ton of money consuming goods and services...They like spending bucks at garage sales.

I have long favored a Fair Tax for the same reason I favor single payer healthcare – simplicity. Anything that can help ease the burden of paperwork and red tape for already overworked Americans is fine by me. One thing I never quite understood is the idea that a Fair Tax would eliminate the IRS. While it could reduce it, the agency would probably still exist in some form to collect the tax and administer the rebates. With the exception of very few politicians (R or D), this idea has about as much chance of passing as legalized drugs and prostitution.

Monker, Disneyland is a great bang for the buck. They offer three days for 105 dollars. The place has great culture, real family environment, and pathways so clean you can eat off them. Heck, we leave the purse in the stroller when we wait in line. Real trusting place. It truly makes you feel good being there. Lynn and Melissa will back me up on this, as they frequent Disneyworld a lot....same culture as Disneyland.

What's expensive is Major League baseball and movie theatres. Sure you can buy an Dodger ticket for 10 bucks, sit in the outfield, but pay 10 to park, 7 for a hot dog and 10 for a beer....same with theatres...7 to get in, and once in, they rape you for food and beverage. At least Disney gives you something once inside.

Where are you getting that price? http://disneyland.disney.go.com/tickets/ doesn't have that, even under SoCal resident prices.

Dean,

I'm right with you on Disney...I am a WDW addict and we try to get down to Orlando at least once ever two years.

Also, you are spot on in saying that it makes you feel good being there. While a week in Disney World is hardly physically relaxing...I likely walk more miles in the 4 theme parks than I do in 2 months at home.....it is the most emotionally and spiritually recharging place I can vacation to.

I come back from these trips complete recharged to deal with the crap life throws me in the real world.
