I think it entirely depends on what kind of relationship you have with the people you work with so you are really the only person that can answer that for yourself. As for me, I have lots of co-workers as friends on FB...and handful that I've declined friend requests from. Just as you have to be the one to choose what you post and what you don't post. FB is not MAKING you post anything so be selective.

I avoid the whole thing by not having a facebook account. That way nobody gets pissed off.

I hardly use Facebook and the most personal thing I posted on there was simply my current employer - I don't even have a picture posted (my avatar is a picture of our Jack Russell). If someone I at least knew in "real life" sends me a Friends request, like old classmates and such, I accept them (unless it is a person I truly want nothing to do with) because I don't post anything remotely private on there and nothing I would not be comfortable saying to my boss. My only use for Facebook is keeping up with people I went to school with or former coworkers. I did have one coworker who defriended me after I became her manager a few years ago - thank God, because the personal stuff she posted on there was stuff I did not want to know about!

I have coworkers on mine, but just a few, only the ones that are actually on FB. But like Rick said, we're like a family, we're a relatively small group, and most of us have worked together for about 14 years now. We've been through good and bad life experiences, births, deaths, you name it, and been supportive of each other all those years. So no I don't see any major problem with that, or how it's an invasion of "privacy". My private life is in my home, not on FB  The only things people could possibly know about your private life on FB are things you choose to put on there. No one's forcing anyone to share their "private" life on there   People can only know what you share. That being said I don't usually add people anyhow, and there is no one on mine that I don't personally know.

FB is awesome way to communicate for events...like class reunions and such....which our HS class did last year to set up our 30 year reunion... GREAT fun in catching up with old friends...lots of people posted old pictures from HS days, junior high and all the way back to elementary school.... and many of us are still talking because of it today...its a great reconnection from our youth to adulthood... if you dont take FB too seriously...and your self to serious... you shouldnt have issues... but hey thats just me...

I asked a similar question when we had an informal poll about this at work a few months ago. The answer from some was 'well, we don't have enough time to talk to each other during the day' - this coming from the same people who I know for a fact spend at least 30-40% of their work day 'visiting' (and then probably at least another 20% complaining about how 'busy' they are and can't get anything done)

Not a bad philosophy Jonny. Hey, do you know where Houlton Maine is? My dad lives there, and I was just out there this past June for a week long camping/fishing trip. I had an amazing time, and caught some beautiful fish. Saw 7 or 8 moose while I was there too! I grew up in Florenceville N.B. for 11 years. Pretty place, but there isn't SHIT there!!!

I've only been that far north 3 times in my life. Once to tour UMaine in Presque Isle when looking for a college, once to trace family history, and again to tour Baxter State Park (if that counts. I don't think it's quite north enough.) You are right about one thing, there is a lot of nothing up there, unless you like to fish, canoe over rivers, or hike trails.

The big attraction in Houlton is one of the Marden's stores. A Maine chain of salvage & thrift stores, once runned and owned by our new state governor. I've met a lot of New Brunswickians who rave over that store and particularly that one location closest to their border.

But even Bangor with its empty mall and 2nd largest population in the state is still a pretty nothing city in comparison to Portland and anything out-of-state.

Anything north of Exit 113, the one that connects I95 to Route 3 and the coast, is considered the middle of nowhere, according to most out-of-staters. If you go any further north, it's speciafically for hiking, fishing, and/or camping. Certainly not for shopping.

Kinda like Rip said - privacy is everything. While all those social sites are kinda cool & fun, I see no necessity at all.

Grow a garden.
Build some furniture.
Read non-fiction.
Live simply.

I do love coastal Maine, Bar Harbor, Acadia NP. I've had several great vacations there. :D

I have quite a few fb friends from here on my facebook profile...but I only have one friend from work...
To put it bluntly, I would trust people here that I have never met before trusting someone I work with.

Perhaps that says more about my workmates than not...but the fact remains that I see enough of my co-workers 8-4...

facebook is for my private life....and the last thing I want is for people that I'm stuck seeing during the day commenting on what I'm musing about on the weekends or nights.

Anything posted on Facebook or the Internet in general can and will be used against you at work or when you apply for a job - potential employers really do check up on stuff like that and I know of one person (I didn't work with her personally) who would have used damaging information to further her career. The biggest problem is that you cannot control what other people post about you or post of you.

One poor girl was sexually assaulted outside a rave by multiple attackers and instead of stopping it, one of the scum bags who stood by and watched downloaded pictures to Facebook where they spread like wildfire. He has been charged with child pornography as the girl is only 16, but it happened in a small town in BC - and this kid not only has to live with what happened to her, but the fact that at least hundreds saw photos of it online, including the kids in her school which she no longer attends. This kind of stuff just makes me sick.
