I still haven't seen Thor or Captain America yet, but I am excited about the Avengers.

Joss Whedon is an unproven entity when it comes to directing big summer movies. What else has he done? A few episodes of Buffy? By his own admission, they are writing the script as they go along. I really don't have much faith in this movie. Iron Man 2 felt busy, with too many characters, kinda like Batman and Robin. How on earth are they gonna pull off a movie with all these different characters?

He also did Firefly and the related movie Serenity, and was linked for a while to the (cancelled) big screen Wonder Woman project.

Yeh, all things on a much much smaller scale. We shall see. Always cool to see the Hulk on the big screen. Don't understand why they can't get that franchise up and running.

One thing that they have going for them is that every major character except Hawkeye have been thoroughly introduced and developed. Hopefully it'll start off showing how Loki gets a hold of the cosmic cube and we hit the ground running with 2+ hours of kick-assness!!! :D

Joss is "Buffy/Firefly" guy. Serenity wasn't very good. It was pretty boring and by Whedon's own admission, the whole Firefly thing was his take on Han Solo.

Still, for some reason, I think Avengers is going to be anything but boring.

I saw most of this trailer already back when I saw "Sherlock Holmes" a few months ago...except for the "We have a Hulk" bit, it was pretty much the same.

Still looks awesome tho.

Serenity was great, IMHO. And Angel is the best of all Joss's works.

I never watched Firefly, but always heard it was great. Saw Serenity when it came out, and really enjoyed it. I should check out Firefly sometime, then watch the movie again.

The Avengers trailer is quite cool.

They're releasing too many clips from this movie, in addition to previews. I'm avoiding them as I know more than enough (thanks Joss...not).

I do like the new int'l Amazing Spider-Man trailer.

The movie is 2 hours and 17 minutes. Watching a 90 second clip is nothing.

I've heard the movie is more like 2 hours, 30 minutes.

A lot more footage has been released/leaked than a couple 90-second clips, when you add everything up. In an interview, Whedon even revealed the alien race that is Loki's army. Other tidbits have slipped out, too. I'm ignoring the hype machine till May 4.

I'm excited to see it because I personally got to watch a lot of this movie's filming here in Cleveland, which isn't exactly an everyday occurrence around here. But I am worried that the sheer number of characters and special effects don't end up costing the movie a solid plot and good thematic "feel" (ala Dark Knight, Captain America).

So far, the various Avengers solo movies have been hit or miss. Iron Man, Captain America, and Hulk were good; Iron Man 2 and (especially) Thor were not so great. Here's hoping this movie comes closer to the former group of movies.

The review on IGN said they also had concerns over the number of characters to handle, but said Whedon pulled it off incredibly well - that he was used to making "team" movies or something like that. Sounds like a solid winner from their report (excerpts below).

http://movies.ign.com/articles/122/1223096p1.html

...There is a ton to juggle in Avengers, which incorporates four characters who have previously been the leads in their own films, two other notable superheroes, a major supervillain and a supporting cast of spies. It could all be a complete mess, and honestly, the film could be qualified a "win" simply for not falling apart.

...The Avengers continually delivers the goods, with well-orchestrated, appropriately bigger than life moments.

...But the best part of hiring Whedon to tackle this movie is the character interaction. Anyone who's seen Buffy, Angel or Firefly knows Whedon is amazingly skilled at showing the dynamics of a team and the combustible elements that go with putting a group of people together with very different skills and viewpoints. From Steve Rogers' no-nonsense approach, to Tony Stark's humorous narcissism, to Thor's straight-laced, otherworldly focus, each character feels dead on, and it's almost as fun to see them in the midst of an argument aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier as it is to watch them actually take to the streets and fight either mutual enemies or one another - Yes, as is comic book tradition when superheroes first meet, there is more than one hero vs. hero battle along the way, most of them ridiculously fun.

The flaws in the film are ones that simply come with the territory in tackling an Avengers film at all – at least one that isn't four hours long. With so many characters, it's somewhat inevitable that someone get shortchanged and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) is notably underused here, making his true film debut (after a cameo in Thor). Also, the film's storyline is pretty basic. Loki is here to conquer the Earth, the Avengers have to stop him.... And that's about it. But I feel like this bare bones approach is the right step for this first Avengers film. There is so much time needed just to show the team forming and how these iconic characters get along together (or don't) that a more complex plan by the villain isn't needed and would only bog things down. Regardless, Hiddleston continues to be compelling as Loki, having already done a great job establishing him in Thor.

Just got back from the Imax 3D midnight showing. This movie kicks all kinds of ass. I'm going to need to see it 3 or 4 more times just to properly process all the awesomeness. Like all other Marvel flicks. Stay for the credits.

Loved it. As a devout Whedonite for many, many years, it's great to see that the man's brilliance will now be recognized by greater Hollywood. Easily the best film in its genre.

I'm a fan of Tom Hiddleston, having discovered him on Kenneth Branagh's show "Wallander" and the two of them together on the stage production of Ivanov.

He actually bulked up with 50 pounds of muscle to play Thor but Kenneth thought that he was better suited as Loki. A great actor, not that that is a requirement for these types of films.

Saw it at 5pm yesterday - incredibly entertaining, and Hiddleston's performance totally takes it to new heights this time. I know what they mean now by Whedon knowing how to manage a 'team' in a film. Every character got to shine, and the interaction (both positive and negative) was outstanding. Small example - seeing the two geniuses working together in the lab. Tons of good humor too, especially one extreme ROFL moment (not going to spoil it).
