And had had two heart attacks previously b/c of drugs and overdosing. And Alan Wilder, the keyboardist, fed up, left, who composed all the music and Martin Gore was the writer of the lyrics. Dave Gahan never wrote any of the music that he sang, ever. They thought without Wilder the band couldn't go on after Dave got out of rehab. And Ultra was a very dark album b/c of the circumstances of Dave almost dying and his addiction and Wilder leaving, and a much more mature album, not the dance sound, but I thought amazing. Dave finally wrote songs on a solo album and I believe their last DM album.

I know Dave's history, ( He's been in recovery for quite a few years now,) but I meant hung in as in still producing music to this day, almost 30 years. Ultra is a very cool album.

My favourite album of the 80s is Bryan Adams' Reckless - awesome album and lots of great memories!

What was wonderful about the 80's is that there was SO MUCH great music
to choose from that I simply cannot/will not choose one!!
Being overwhelmed with so many choices...did we realize how lucky
we were ~then!?!

So true. Martin has such an amazing voice, too. I loved this song and his vocals on it on their new album. I thought it is his best ever on lead vocals: Jezebel - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKnjm5SJ5jc

That song is so moving.......and so full of truth. Something that gets me more upset than I can know is to see a lack of compassion for others. This song says it all. :D They were a great band.

And another beautiful song from that album, Seeds of Love '89, is Woman in Chains. One of Roland's favorites he wrote. Here it is live with the great Oleta Adams he and Curt discovered singing in a bar. And Phil Collins played drums on the studio version of this song.

I was just listening to all of these the other day. It's funny how different and alternative their music was considered 30 years ago, and now they are mainstream, tame and almost pop like.

Their reunion CD in 2004 is definitely pop sounding or light rock, but Beatlesesque as they said.

It was just unique in that in the '80s they weren't songs about being in love, more darker with synth melodies or angst or political in tone and then Seeds of Love album took a huge left turn and was pop rock/blues/soul/jazz. I don't know, a whole mixed bag. SOL threw me at first. I missed their old sound, but came to absolutely love SOL, especially the lush sound production and songs like

Standing on the Corner of the Third World: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTNK__eOoMs

and Swords and Knives: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3N-fFV-f3Q

I MISSED the 80s. I have no connection to that decade - all I did was work, school, work, school. I did love Spandau Ballet, 'tho and remember wearing an off the shoulder sweat shirt ala Flashdance.

At work the other day I saw a lady wearing leg warmers....I told her I remember wearing those in grade school in the early to mid 80's  :)
