I never even knew there was such a thing  I think there was a whole era of technology that I missed out on

They were kinda like BetaMAX... very short lived/failed technology. They were neat for their time though.

Ah, maybe that's why I missed it! I was still using my walkman at that time, no doubt  Or MAYBE by then, I just had a portable cd player and I only listened to one cd at at time. I guess it depends on what year we are talking about

I think it would probably be mid to late 90s, just before the MP3 explosion. So you had probably graduated to a DiscMan at that point  . Don't worry, I had all that shit too. I've always loved music

They actually lasted for quite awhile in Japan. I have Escape on MD (and 8-track). MiniDisc was really a great medium, especially the ability to load up mixed discs of all your favorite songs. More compact and durable than a portable CD player and more cost efficient than the first and second generation mp3 players. They are still being used quite a bit, taking the place of DAT as a portable hi quality-audio recorder as they give interviewers or whomever a removable storage piece that they can catalog and keep separate from the player itself.

I lived in Japan (Okinawa) late 80's and early 90's and there were these little discs popular there then, about 50% smaller than a regular CD, are those the mini-discs?

This is what minidiscs looked like

There were also many artist releasing singles on a mini cd's that you could play in most cd-players. Minidiscs were awesome. More compact than cds, plus the protective cartridge....

Yep, those are it! I remember them, what they were most popular for when I was in Oki. were for single releases, back when singles were still popular, lol.

Yup, like I said, my father and I got into them because they came out in the days when it was tough to get MP3s and even tougher/more expensive to get (1) A CD Burner (2) Blank media and (3) A good burning program. They were cool. I think my dad's still got his old player hooked up at his house, I'll have to check next time I'm over there.

With a name like iPad, can Apple's new device possibly have wings?

By Monica Hesse
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, January 28, 2010

After months of speculation over what Apple would call its latest sacred touch-screen device (iSlate? iTablet?), the company revealed Tuesday that it had opted to go with iPad.

Boyfriends everywhere promptly refuse to purchase it unless they could simultaneously buy some really manly products, like shaving cream and batteries.

Are You There God? It's Me, Steve Jobs.

Business Insider declared the name "terrible," with one columnist writing that he'd heard rumors of the name "but dismissed it immediately," thinking that Apple would have the foresight to predict a landslide of menstruation mockery. (Did they not see "MADtv's" iPad parody in 2007?)

Meanwhile, the blogosphere found the name debate totally absorbing -- "How will it stand up to other tablets if I pour a test tube full of blue water on it?" one Lemondrop blogger wondered -- and a heavy flow of iPad-related Twitter traffic led "iTampon" to become a top trending topic.

"Are there NO women in the Marketing or Biz Dev department of Mac?" wrote one user, speculating that "iPad" would pass muster only with a man. No women were present on Apple's panel at the San Francisco announcement.

Apple, for its part, heralded the iPad as "a magical and revolutionary device" on its Web site, and did not return a phone call for comment.

This is not the first time that a widely anticipated product launch was met with ridicule. Nintendo's Wii was referred to as "Wee" by disparaging gamers who could not get stoked about a console that sounded like a potty-training term. The Wii went on to break retail records, selling 600,000 units in its first eight days.

However, Apple has yet to address what women everywhere anticipate will obviously be the iPad's biggest problem: You can't use one while swimming.

Does it need to be plugged up at night to prevent battery drainage?

The name is pretty funny. 9.7 inches long... how wide is it?

I've actually heard some complaints about the iPad ironically from iPhone lovers here at work, like the fact that you can't have 2 apps open at the same time, or have a flash player on it for vids.
