Let's see now... gee, maybe fight in World War I & II from the start, instead of waiting a couple of years to see how it was going to pan out, then swan in at the end and claim all the credit like the USA did?
though his statement was ignorant I wouldn't say the US takes all the credit. Any WWII movies I've seen show the US soldiers fighting as well as British and others. They had to wait for a reason that involved us. As soon as they had it they were in. The only reason that Germany lost that war from the things I've watched and learned from a husband obsessed with studying that war, is that Hitler got greedy. He divided up his army instead of keeping it full force in one direction and he should have worked faster on that atomic bomb. That's only a simplistic view, but no one country alone won that war. It was full of world wide Heroes and mistakes on the other side.
I know, hon, it was sarcasm on my part, because I do get tired of some Americans talking about how 'we' rescued France and 'you'd be speaking German if it wasn't for us' - and to then have someone ask 'why should Canada have a Memorial Day'... well, it bugs me. I'm an Australian; our national day of remberance is Anzac Day, which we share with New Zealand, Anzac standing for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The day is the anniversary of Anzac troops landing in Gallipoli; that campaign is a huge part of our heritage and our sense of national identity, and fighting alongside us were the Canadians. When it comes to remembering our fallen soldiers, the people who defended our freedoms, Canada always stood with Australia and New Zealand, without hesitation, from the outset. So I guess I take someone implying Canada has no right to a day of rememberance for fallen soldiers pretty personally; it's like someone telling me Australia has no right either.
Besides which, I believe Canada is the only country to have 'officially' defeated America in a war, and on US soil too!

Know of what you speak when it comes to serious topics like this.
Do you have ANY IDEA of the WORLD-WIDE sacrifices the USA has made throughout history? Stop "pissing" on the graves of the AMERICANS who have fought and DIED for FREEDOM throughout the world!
We DID help LIBERATE France. That is a FACT. Without the USA, WWII would not have been won. That is also a FACT.
Your disrespect and ignorance is astounding to me.

You know what - fuck you, Black Pot. Arseholes like you are the reason why 'talk about Americans' gets met with rolled eyes all over the English speaking world.
Tomulator wrote:I'll add that the US did not liberate France alone. Nobody should imply that. It was a large, coordinated effort which involved many countries either directly or indirectly. However, if the USA was not involved, it would most certainly not have succeeded.
Nobody (at least I haven't) should try to diminish Canada, Australia, or any other country's own sacrifices. They are just as significant.

Sorry, could you please point out anywhere that I said the USA hasn't made sacrifices or contributions to the world? Anywhere I have said anything disrespectful about the sacrifice made by American soldiers, past and present?
I'm not the one throwing a tanty because it was suggested that a few people make stupid, assinine comments that unfortunately make their countrymen look bad.

Yes, you did imply that the American sacrifices were "overrated" and "exaggerated".

1. I am Australian, not European. If you had read my original response to Everett, you should know that.
Yes. I realize that. What does that have to do with my comment? Explain please.
2. I'm not anti-American, I'm anti-idiot, especially especially when the idiocy is insulting.
You come off as "anti-American". You insinuate that American's are looked at with "rolled eyes" around the world. Sound familiar?
3. I did not make light of American contributions to the world. Let me say this again, very slowly, so you can maybe understand: SOME... Americans... behave... like... America... is... the... only... country... that... was... involved... in... the... victory... in... World... Wars... One... and... Two. This... makes... Americans... look... bad... and... is... annoying... and... insulting... to... every... other... country... involved.
Get it yet?
Re-read the tone of your posts. They make statements which insinuate that America stood idly by while the rest of the world fought Hitler, only to jump in after the fact and take all the credit. Again...sound familiar?
3. I have not ignored history, or facts, about anything. I haven't made any comment about what the USA has actually done or hasn't done. Nor have I "bashed" the USA. I've spoken about the attitude of certain Americans, NOT about America itself.
Your tone is one of general "disdain" for American "arrogance" and a general "glossing over" of the GOOD that the USA has REPEATEDLY done throughout modern history.
4. What does soccer have to do with anything? And how on earth did you get that I implied war is some kind of amusing game? Let me refresh your memory - this started because I got very annoyed with Eve suggesting that Canada had done nothing to merit honouring the war dead with a day of rememberance. I take the sacrifice of those who died in wars to defend their countries VERY seriously, and get very pissed off when someone implies that a nation has no right or reason to mourn or honour their soldiers and war dead.
Does the little "smiley face" next to your comment about Canada defeating the USA in a war on our soil strike a bell with you?? You seem to take some amount of "satisfaction" from that. Why is that?
5. Canada IS the only country to have defeated the USA in a war, and it DID do so on US soil. That is neither pithy, nor is it disrespectful, it is a simple historical fact (which you seem to be terribly keen on). To extrapolate from that a disrespect for the death of those involved is simply idiotic.
See #4 above.![]()
6. I did not, have not, and will not, ever say that the terrible sacrifice made by ANY soldier, regardless of which side they fought on, was exagerated or over rated. Asking a human being to risk their lives, to kill and to be killed, is the most terrible, solemn and dreadful thing we can do, and cannot be done lightly. The people who took on that risk, no matter what their motivations, no matter which side they fought on, made a sacrifice that should never be diminished or looked down on. War is a terrible, horrific thing; those who go to it to protect their country and their ideals - there aren't any words to describe how awe-inspiring that sacrifice is. I would NEVER disrespect that sacrifice, by ANY soldier, even if I was personally opposed to what they were fighting for (and as a pacifist, that's pretty much any side of any war.)
Was the world incorrect to fight Nazi-ism?
What I did say, repeatedly, and I will say it again, is that I dislike it when SOME Americans talk as though ONLY America was responsible for victory in BOTH World War One and World War Two. It is wrong, and it is disrespectful to every other nation that sacrificed its sons in that cause, and it makes America and Americans look bad. All of which are very good reasons to be intensely irritated by it.
It seems to me that you have one hell of a chip on your shoulder, one that leads you to shooting your mouth off and generally making yourself look like an idiot. And yes, it IS people who react the way you have that makes ALL Americans look bad. Just like it's a small group of fuckwits who gave Australians the reputation in Europe of being drunken arseholes, which every Aussie who goes to Europe has to suffer with. So do us all a favour and get over yourself.
