As for dirty hostels - some are appalling, but most of the hostels I stayed in were quite nice. There's a lot of fun travelling without a tour guide and discovering new things. Taught me a very important lesson - it's not getting lost, it's creative tourism.

That kind of traveling isn't my thing though. I'd rather chill at a beach bar in Puerto Banus, then to wade around in some old ass town in southern Hungary. But don't get me wrong; my family's ski cabin in Norway doesn't got any water, so we got to get water from a well nearby, which means we also got the toilet outside (don't know the translation for it). I've slept in a lot of cabanas though and that's pretty "backpackery" too I guess, Martinique is especially awesome.

I remember the post count rankings. There was a time when most of the regulars were in the Rant! forum; a good 3 dozen of us converted that into a 'whatever's on our mind'-type forum like this is now; we were the ones who suggested to Andrew to change the rank titles, and/or add additional rankings, because at the time, several of us had already achieved the highest rank status, which I think only required a couple thousand posts back in the day.

I once suggested that getting enough posts should allow us to unlock an option in our profiles to create our own unique rank title. But I don't think it was ever implimented.

Thanks, but I'd be pretty hopeless if I was trying to hold a conversation in French these days. I do plan to go back to France at some point; I have a lot more wine to drink that hasn't had to travel, and I never made it to the south of France, which I want to do. Fortunately for me, my experience is it takes me about 3 days at most to remember the languages I've learned, once I'm surrounded by them.

As for an outside toilet, in Australia, that's a dunny. And hey, backpackers hang out in a LOT of bars Especially in nice, sunny places.

I might watch... and I literally NEVER watch golf. I've never once watched it other than it being on in a bar. Tiger could boost ratings even more for golf now by virtue of this comeback. The curiosity of the entire country (dare I say world?) is piqued
