Under Clinton we still spent more on the military than anyone.
I'd argue that a real conservative would want to cut wasteful Pentagon pork (like McCain and Gates are trying to do).

G.I.Jim wrote:I don't believe in "negotiating" with terrorists, as these assholes would just as soon behead you, Wyatt and Lulu, and air it on live t.v. than carry on a converstation with you.

Your president wants to open up dialog with these kind of people without pre-conditions. THAT scares the hell out of me.

And the radical right also bitched when Nixon went to China and Reagan spoke to Gorbachev.

It's pretty telling that you don't post the President's quote.
In it, Obama renounced negative attitudes on both sides of the Atlantic, saying: "They are not wise. They do not represent the truth."

That's what Hoover's Treasury Secretary said.

Actually, what Hoover allowed to happen was a huge tax increase just months after the crash occurred. THAT was not smart!

Clinton was being blamed for a recession that started in March 2001 (as verified by National Bureau of Economic Research), as well as a terrorist attack that happened EIGHT months into Bush's first term.
Obama, on the other hand, was being blamed for the economic downturn before he somuchas placed his hand on the bible.

Al Queda attacked US interests 4 times in the 90's. Both he and W when he took over should have been more proactive in hitting them, however, that wouldn't have gone over well with the general public.

As far as stating that the recession began in March 2001, that depends on if you use the traditional definition of what a recession is AND if you use the revised data. GDP was negative in Q4-2000, Q1-2001, Q2-2001 and Q3-2001. A recession officially is when 2 consecutive quarters of GDP are negative. That would mean that the recession began in Q4-2000. Others like to create their own definition of a recession and will label us in a recession if the stock market is headed down. The Nasdaq tanked in March 2000 leading many people to say the THAT was proof of a recession. The bottom line is that recessions occur and are best left to run their cycles. Clinton was not at fault for the early 2000's, nor was Bush at fault for it.....or the 2008 one. However, some of the excessive intervention that he and Obama have presided over could make this one worse. The real shock is how GDP was so strong in Q4-2000 after the 9-11 attacks. You could argue that the tax cut in the summer of 2000 helped because GDP is comprised of 2/3 consumer spending and giving folks more money to spend makes sense. However, the rebate thing has gone too far.

This was borne out by the Fed's report.

I've wondered the same thing myself. I guess once they luck out and get control of a big ship or two it's easier for them to push people around??

Good. I have to fly directly there, because the 6 hour drive won't work for me, as I am going to be "sick" from work and don't have the time to fly to Pittsburgh.

Ticketmaster is caving Stu. Dropping GA's for the floor for 65 dollars(face 95). Both nights are sold out, but we'll score. Granny is in. Setlist is at 28 songs. Just under 3 hours. Shooting for the 4/29 show. If we can't make this(I am trying very hard to), we can do Giants Stadium. Looks like 3 nights again there this go round too.

Back to the topic at hand, this is a precise example why you just don't go in and blatantly wipe out the Pirates. They have hundreds of captives in their control from different countries. If we go wipe them out or start killing them, they will gleefully execute these hostages. I agree with what Obama did last week, the captain had to be saved, because the opportunity presented itself, but now we are in much deeper shit because of it. If I were BO, I would institute an Indian ocean Escort Operative, and make our presence known there. Put a stop to this shit right now.

Nowhere does the CRA direct banks to dole out liar loans or so-called NINJA loans (no income, no job, no assets).
As a point of fact, CRA loans had a lower default rate than other subprimes specifically because of the federal regulations that came attached with it.
And private mortgage companies like Countrywide, that provided the majority of subprime loans, were not covered by CRA.
The gov't didn't force those same lenders to then sell these loans to Wall Street who bundled them into into complex derivatives which were given false Triple A ratings by Moody's etc.
This is the private sector run wild.
As Alan Greenspan recently genuflected before Congress on the myth of self-regulation:

"I made a mistake in presuming that the self-interests of
organizations, specifically banks and others, were such as that they were best capable of protecting their own shareholders and their equity in the firms.”

Eric wrote:2) I get the sense you blame solely/mostly the lenders....but what about people taking responsibility for their decisions?

Sure, people are stupid, but there's something to be said about predatory lending as well.
If the banks kept the mortgages on their books, as they once did, rather than selling them to Wall Street, this mess wouldn't be half as bad as it is.

Which came on the heels of a top marginal tax rate as low as 25 percent.
More than likely, this was Hoover's attempt to balance the budget in a time of crisis - much like the appeals of today's GOP to reign in spending.

I agree whole heartedly Deano, O fucked this up with last weekends antics of killing those pirates. He's destabilizing the Country, whipping up support against us, now they're taking more ships and hostages all because of the Cowboy Obama. This is a quagmire and we're gonna lose world opinion and the pirate war. Get our Navy out of Somalia now. No blood for bounty. We have no business in this unauthorzied pirate war, Congress hasn't declared a war yet and O is acting all on his own without the people behind him. I thought we were through with this kind of shit when W left town, guess not.

Dont agree(though Im sensing a bit of sarcasm in your tone :?: ) I think we are quite right to defend the shipping lanes over there. theres plenty of precedent. The US sent Steven Decatur over there in 1798 (off the shores of Tripoli) when there was a pirate threat (and decatur was an officer in the Navy not a merchant marine) . The problem is back then Decatur could go and kick ass and not have to worry about international law, the pirates feelings and all other sort of nonsence.

I say do what Ron Paul says, sub the work out to a private merchant Navy to do the dirty work. Better yet, take all of our theives, rapists, drug dealers, tax felons, out of prison (or better yet all the politicians in the state of Illinois) and tell them they have a choice of jail or going out to the Indian Oceant to hunt PIrates. Well give em speed boats, and each one of em a big ass butterfly net and a M16. For every pirate boat they take down they get a keg of Old Milwaukee beer and a package of Hormel Hotdogs( they get the buns an relish too if they acutally recover money or hostages) . we get rid of the pirates and the felons all at once.

lol, lighten up fact finder. my use of "regualr folks" was sincere, as in meaning part of the large group of folks that are seeing a slightly larger paycheck, as i am. i don't understand the protest. if it is against paying taxes, well that is just a way of life- someone has to pay for our infrastructure and various services. yesterday was the deadline to file for 2007- that was a bush tax year, so were these folks protesting bush? it is an insult to real grassroots organizations to say the tea baggers were organized at that level. i believe the term used in astro turf? i watched a replay of hannity's show with joe the plumber..... give me a break   . i'm all for dissent and protest so more power to em. i am unaware of taxation without representation other than maybe puerto rico and d.c. so i'm kind of wanting to understand what is being protested.

Yeah, Fox News and Karl Rove hypnosis did all of this. No doubt.

And screw San Fran Nan and her astroturf remark. She blamed this on big money organizers which is bad, except when Soros or Dem operatives bus people around the country for their protests. See ACORN and AIG Execs. You libs aren't the only group out here ya know. The world doesn't just revolve around your thought process, especially as limited as it is.

oh come on, please address my post, please answer my questions. i couldn't care less if fox news is behind the tea baggers; protest is a good thing.
