Martin Popoff is another good contributor to the rock world, I was reading his stuff before melodicrock went online (which of course catered to my needs and then some :lol:

) but I still follow Popoff's work and came accross this gem.

Have a look at this link for his interview with Sammy while they both take a trip down memory lane with OU812. I recall Popoff rated OU812 a 6/10 when it came about, pretty sad but he was a lover of all things Dave and not Sam, I on the other hand love this album and after reading this was all inspired again, ya's know the deal!

Anyway, I know Andrew rates Van Hagar too so I'm sure he'll dig this too!

Thanks for that Wardy.....I really enjoyed that read, as OU812 was really one of my two favourite albums of 1988.
Nice to see Sammy saying good things about it.

Ya know Kenny my wife leant over my shoulder when I put the post up (handed me medication for this f***'n virus I was handballed from our kids :roll:

) and I said if anyone is going to enjoy this (aside from Andrew) it's this fella, Kenny. Pleased to hear ya liked it, always pays to go huntin for these things.

Still rate it the worst Van Hagar album, but then again, it does contain my second favourite VH song of all time - Mine All Mine.

I think it's probably the worst sounding VH album, but it has so many great memories of that time of my life it will always hold a place close to my heart.
The first side (on the cassette) used to get absolutely flogged!!!
And 'Mine all Mine' is right up there with me too, top 5, no doubt.

and the best song of Sammy era, FINISH WHAT YA STARTED. stunning, stunning song, Edward makes an electric sound like some kind of country acoustic while still sounding electric? The hell did they make song?

Andrew????? U like Balance better than OU812? I love Balance but think OU812 us way better particularly cause it still had that allovertheshop guitars and vocals that was so summerfreelike 5150. I thought from the release of F.U.C.K on although still great, things got a little formula from here on!?

KENNY, so what's the second of the two best albums you got from 88?

RED13JOEPA, funny how we can all love an album but not for the same songs. I never liked Finish what ya started and still skip it. Sure it was a good departure and probably quite necessary cause without the song the album woulda been sameish throughout maybe, but hey, at least we agree it was a fantastic album! :lol:

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, no doubt.

Funny what you were saying, I always think of OU812 in the same terms as 5150 as well.....it had the same kind of vibe somehow.....I liked FUCK, but didn't like the sound of it so much, particularly Ed's sound.
Balance? I liked it, but it was patchy in my view.

If I were to list a top5 for each year 7th Son would without a doubt be apart of that list! I must confess however that I wasn't a Maiden fan at the time and only got into them years after 7th Son, so it would be only fair for me to admit that at the time of listening in 88 after OU812 I would probably go for DLR Skyscaper as number 2!

Hmmm, maybe a top5 list for particular years could be a good thread?.....

I remember Skyscraper fondly too. Just like Paradise was pretty much the anthem for myself and a group of mates for 1988.

I remember it wasn't until a 'long' time later I read a Martin Popoff review of Skyscraper where he rated it a 9/10 if I remember right, but he commented the highlight of the album was HINA, and I gotta admit after going back to it and analyzing all the guitars etc, wow what a cool song!

For readers info, Popoff rated 5150 a 6 also, F.U.C.K. an 8 and Balance a 5/10.

Phaa! He just couldn't get it, his loss! I think the Van Hagar era albums are standing the test of time extremely well and sounding better every year. Or is that just me getting older still? Gotta stop this aging thing :lol:

Just wish they'd bloody remaster em!!!!! Properly at that too!

Production was better on this cd, than the following. Production was best on the first and last Van HAgar cds.-ERIC

Yes about a month ago. Had it for a year and finally worked my way to it. What did you think? Just now starting over in my list. Back in the A's. Just listened to a pretty good Asia boot.
