Van Halen SOul Sirkus controversy

Postby rockeratheart » Wed Oct 05, 2005 8:07 am

I would liek to add, regarding the business about Eddie not wanting to be on a bill with Soul Sirkus cause Neal Schon would havfe blown him away. I dont know if I buy that. eddie does not seem like the type of guy who si threatened by other players..I am not suggesting he feels he is better than everybody . I mean that in the past he has gone out on the road with Goerge Lynch , Steve Lynch abnd Kenny Wayne Sheperd opening for him , so I dont think he is frightened by this. Even a kick ass guitar virtusous liek Neal Schon.. I think eddi would just use it as a challenge to push himself harder..BTW I still have not heard Soul Sirkus yet, but I saw Journey last year and Neal was jsut as outstanding as always.

I definitely don't think ego would have been a factor as far as Ed's concerned!

Perhaps Planet Us was indeed the negating factor.

I forgot, did Journey open for VH years back. Or did VH open for Journey? My understanding is that the 'feud' between Neal and Eddie goes WAY back. I imagine it was exacerbated by PlanetUS.

neal vs eddie

Postby rockeratheart » Wed Oct 05, 2005 11:19 pm

vna halen opened for Journey in the late seventies and Journey treated them very badly. Accroding to Eddie in an interview he did for GW that was conducted by Bill Corgan around the mid nineties, VH was attracting a lot of fans to the shows, thus creating large attendance numbers and more money for the tour so by the time the stint was over JOurney realized what a good financial match this was and asked VH to continue to tour with them but VH had had enough of Journey so they said NO!!!!

HOwever, since that time NEal and Eddie have jammed onstage together at a couple of NAMM conventions shows and they have mutal friends and I have read where they have made postive commentsabout each other's playing

Thanks for giving new life to the VH forum, rocker. Hasn't been this active in a loooong time.

Do you know why Eddie thought Journey treated VH badly? What year was that, '78 or so?

I think JOurney was not letting VH do soundchecks..Just the usual type of mistreatment given to opening bands. Not allowing them to give their best.. Eddie said to ease the tension they would play mean jokes on JOurney and he claiims they made Steve Perry cry
