Ohhh... wtf... just crank it up LOUD!

It's the best track on Balance for that purpose! It ain't deep. It ain't meaningful. It's just a kick-ass tune that begs to be heard!! Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Its one of the tracks I just couldn't get into from Balance. I've seen a couple of concerts where they play it live and it comes off a bit better there, especially the little bit of riffage that Mikey and Eddie do somwhere in the middle of the solo, but yeah the staggered rhythm and contrived lyrics, I struggle.

Still, if its blowin' your hair back man, I'm stoked for you :-)

Appreciate that.

It is an awesome duet of guitars, I must say.

And, as always, there really are no bad VH songs when I'm drinking.

Loved it when it came out, but I've so outgrown those lyrics. just bad.

Musically it's still one of the best numbers on the album and Edward's swaggering little outro still KILLS me.

Right you are, Red!! :) Those lyrics are too corny for me to enjoy the song...I've always thought "Aftershock" was a cool tune off Balance.

Eddie Van Halen has even commented publicly about Sammys' bad lyrics. I can't help but think of Hagars' "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy"...That line about "Hot, Sweet Cherries On The Vine" always kills me!!!

Gotta ally myself with PaddyWags. My man is a cringeworthy lyricist.

That said, he's so prolific that he's drummed up his share of gems (the old blind squirre/nut anology) that are very cool, the "mental masturbation" among the rest.

Lessee....I like the alien as love reference in Love Walks In....that can be so true.

Mental masturbation!!

Another dream goes up in smoke
So I fire me up another toke
Yeah, I'm comin' on
I've got masterplans by the dozen
(something, something) when I get buzzin' 8)

High Hopes, by S. Hagar

The way Sammy rhymes "dozen" with "buzzin'" is pure genius, IMO.

Gotta admit, Sammy was before his time. How about VOA, released in 1984?

Spread the news for all to hear.
We've come to fight, let's make that clear.
You push too hard, you're gonna fall.
We got fifty million rockers, we're all on guard, yeah!
We don't like it. (Oh, no!)
We can make it stop (Oh, yeah!)
We won't take it (C'mon!)
Let it rock!
You in the middle east, you be on your toes.
We're bound to strike, everybody knows.

There's so many "Sammy-isms" to choose from...

"...Mother Nature's gonna punish you...
with some Serious Ju Ju..."

Serious Ju Ju by S. Hagar

I'm guessing "Ju Ju" is some kind of karma, from the over-consumption of tequila!!! :)

Yea, that "JuJu" shit  that's exactly right, they're Sammyisms.
That said, I LOVE 1013. That record still kicks my ass.

Here's one of Sam's lyrics which probably would get him heavily fined nowadays:

Well I ain't no faggot, no no no no
We'll get somethin' straight, between us yet

The entire song, Dick in the Dirt, is a candidate for this thread!

I know this guy named Richard
He's my red-necked friend
He does everything the hard way
You see, Rich don't like to bend.
He went out for a haircut
Get himself a little trim
Got hooked up with a beautician
And she set out to do him in...

 I forgot about that one!!

Besides Sammy's "Sammyisms", I've never cared for his "stock" lyrics. A lot of the same lines and phrases used over and over...like he writes them on the spot in the recording studio. Either you get the stock lyrics, or the crazy "Ju Ju" stuff!!

If we could just get Martin Gore and Dave Gahan to write lyrics for Eddie we'd have something!

I remember seeing them do this song on the "John Stewart Show". It's been one of my Hagar era songs ever since.
