What decade do you think was the Greatest Rock Decade??????

Postby The Crew » Tue Nov 27, 2007 7:59 am

I would like to find out what people think?
If your around 16, don't tell me that this Decade is the best, just cause that's what you know!
Honestly, what do you people think??

I would have to say that the 70's were great! To this day, songs get airplay and everybody seems to be covering a song from the 70's!

For me the 80's because I grown up in this period and it was the best for melodicrock/AOR. But the 70's were also great with Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple etc.

My tastes have always been ecclectic. I listened to oldies all the time because my folks did, but I got sick of what they played on the radio. I didn't care for the 70's, because a lot of it was experimental and unpolished. (but there were greats like Kansas, Genesis, Boston, Triumph, and Rainbow, who were ahead of their time.) And I especially HATED grunge and everything that came out in the 90's.

So that defaulted me to the 80's, because no one was listening to it anymore, and my bro brought me up on it. Didn't matter the genre, it was all formulaic, but in a good sort of way.

I wasn't really a fan of the glam bands who dressed like and sung like girls though. I much preferred, well, real girls, singing rock songs. But even this was a rarety in the 80's. The record industries' standard for female rock was Pat Benetar, Stevie Nicks, and Heart. IMO, they were just pop singers/groups impersonating as rockers, especially when compared to say, Lita Ford, Vixen, Warlock/Doro Pesch, Chrissy Steele, Phantom Blue etc. So I grew up on 80's music, but preferred female singers because it was different from the thousand-or-so male-fronted bands in the same era. At that point, I only picked the best-of-the-best male-fronted bands, not by sales but by the music.

So why did I choose the 00's? For these reasons: Nightwish, Within Temptation, After Forever, Lacuna Coil, Lullacry, Visions of Atlantis, Leaves' Eyes, and of course, Evanescence. The pattern? All female-fronted groups. With Evanescence out-selling every US metal band for 3 years since their debut, and Nightwish destroying every European chart and finally charting in the US, all with a new singer with an AOR background, you could say that my taste for female singers in rock were ahead of their time. Perhaps this will be the new standard for metal when the new decade turns over.

The 80's were great, that's when you could turn on MTV and see your favorite band play or hear something new!

I'm nearly 16 and I hate this decade's music! Either the 60s or the 70s for me.

Interesting to hear another 16 year old take on it. I'm 16 and I also hate today's music. Most of it for that matter.

I'd go '70s too. All of my favorite bands took shape around then. VH, Journey, Styx, Rush, Genesis. Very good decade indeed.

It's up to us young'uns to keep good music alive. :D I chose the 60s in the end, since no-one else had gone for that option.

Prefer the glam metal from roughly '78 to '92, so I picked eighties. The nineties was especially cool until '92 when grunge hit. Saigon Kick was still topping the charts in '92 and even '93 with "Love Is On The Way", one of my all-time favorite ballads. Their "Lizards" album had just come out in '92, and was a very popular album, at least on the college campus I was attending. Everyone being in to Pearl Jam and STP was just around the corner, but Glam was still intensely popular.
