APRIL WINE - Burlington, Vermont 2/9/08

I've been to this city 100 times, but never had the chance to take in a gig at "Higher Ground" before. Apparantly this was AW's first gig of the new year (having last played at a New Year's Eve show). After a few warmup problems (they were breaking in a new road crew) Lead singer Myles Goodwin kicked off the show announcing that this would be one of the last times that they would play this particular setlist, as they were putting a new one together.

Opening song- "Wanna Rock"...and the crowd was fired-up.

A little loud... but I didn't care, as I was there to flashback to the late 70'-early 80's and hopefully hear some of the music I listened to as a teen that belted out of Montreal's CHOM-fm rock station.

Other songs played included in the 1.75 hr set (not in order and off the top of my head): "Say Hello", "Sign of the Gypsy Queen", "Tellin' Me Lies" & "Holiday". Also, four to five "new" songs from their latest album (2006's "Roughly Speaking") were mixed in..."I Am, I Am" and "Sheila" stood out to me as killer tunes, the latter being about an over-obsessive fan(s) that get a little too close for their comfort...Myles threw out an F-bomb when speaking about these type of fans, and then remember he was at an all-ages show...ooops. Drummer Jerry Mercer is certainly a freak of nature at 68-young years of age, pounding the skins like he's 25 again. Soon after the band announced they were ready for a break, Jerry kicked into a 15-minute ass-kicking drum solo while the other members left the stage and returned rested. No break for Jerry. During the show, Myles made it a point to let us know that it was the first time he was trying out his new Fury guitar (one of many he played in the night), which was made by a friend of his in Saskatchewan.

Encores: "Just Between You and Me" & "Roller"....Great ending...Got hammered :D 8) and had a blast meeting people.

Do they ever sing anything off of 1993 release Attitude? Just curious.

This is a band I have always wanted to see. I can not remember the last time they came to my town….if ever. How many originals still in April Wine? Sounds like a great setlist.

Only one going all the way back to the beginning---lead singer/guitarist Myles Goodwyn. The other longtimers are drummer Jerry Mercer(who first joined in 1973) and guitarist Brian Greenway(who joined in 1977).

The group totally changed members by early 1985 before disbanding in 1986. They have been back on the scene since 1992.
