If Bon Jovi were Ugly

If Bon Jovi were ugly, do you think they would have the same amount of longevity as they have had, or would they be playing the local state fairs as many of the 80's hair bands are doing? They recently played 5 nights in Toronto at the ACC. U2 hasn't even done that. If they all looked like the guys in RATT, I really beleive they would have played at the local casino as an 80's nostalgic act. Don't mean to be a troll, but I think it is a valid question.

2hr-hr45 min set lists ,all the hits, heaps of women at there shows, makes u feel like you were 18 all over again.
Thank god for bon jovi.
Beats seeing kiss the old farts who seem to play the same boring set lists.

I imagine they'd be popular, but not nearly as popular. I saw the band live a few years back. A friend had an extra ticket, so I went for free. The crowd—it seemed—was 90% women, and they were treated to numerous close-up ass shots on Bon Jovi on the big screen. Haha. I can't imagine if Bon Jovi was fronted by someone that looked like Lemmy there'd have been that many women there.

Hey, I'd rather 90% of women, too! Haha. But while it was nice to look at, their collective scream was so loud the band sound like they were playing through a small boombox.

Slippery When Wet remains one of the greatest AOR albums ever. Right up there with Escape (but not quite!!!) and Hysteria (though Hysteria has not stood the test of time to me...prefer Pyromania much more). New Jersey is a heck of an album as well. But you're right...the looks helped. Makes Journey that much more impressive. Perry was only "sexy" because of that voice.

Are you kidding? :D

I also think that Bon Jovi's looks were only half of the equation....... don't forget the fans who come to see RICHIE, not only for his hotness, but his guitar playing......... 8)

of course they would of. I mean there are a lot of people out there who support the band only for the music and not for the pure fact they have an attractive front men.

Look at twisted sister, they are not exactly hot now are they but seem to of done okay in the popularity stakes ha ha.

Well, I doubt they would've gotten as much MTV exposure if they hadn't been a 'visual' band. I think their biggest hits were so good that they'd have succeeded no matter what, but I don't think their career would have been as sustainable at that level since they never wrote another batch of songs as good as the stuff on Slippery. (Some good songs, yes, but not AS good)

I think MTV intially pushed them based more on their looks and let the talent angle come in to play later on. Music televison was slowly getting away from videos with pasty white Britains singing romantic punk and started putting on any rock groups with hair longer than the back of their neck regardless of talent.

I don't think they would have been as popular if they were ugly. These guys are just still too cute.

I enjoyed their music long before I knew what they looked like.

First concert was Have a Nice Day Tour in Portland, Oregon
Then Las Vegas
Then Lost Highway Tour in Anaheim, CA

I love these songs....

"It's my life"
"Livin on a Prayer"
'Have a Nice Day"
"You give Love a Bad Name"
"Bad Medicine."
"Welcome to Whereever you Are"
"Who Says you Can't Go Home."

Yes, they are easy on the eyes, but they couldn't have sustained 25 years and still sold out every venue without great music also.

Good question. Anyone who has gone to their concerts over the years knows that they put on a great show and Jon definitely knows how to work a crowd. There are generations of fans there and everyone knows their songs.

I don't think that having the entire package hurts, but they certainly wouldn't still be as popular if they had stayed stuck in the 80's. What I mean is they're not afraid to try new things and grow. I think that is a big part of their popularity. I think that initially when we were all screaming teens those looks certainly didn't hurt, but granted they still look great, but that's not all that there is too it. There have been a lot of great looking men that haven't achieved the level of popularity that Bon Jovi has.

Would Angelina Jolie be as popular if she was ugly or would Brad Pitt? They can both act, but being gorgeous and doesn't hurt.

I saw them a few years ago and was disappointed to see them using an extra guitarist and and an extra keyboard player. Other than that, it was a good show, but I don't have a desire to ever see them again.

In the 80's they had good songs and were pushed by MTV a lot because of their looks and all the screaming female fans. That being said, they are one of the few bands that the music business continued to support even when their music style stopped being the "In" genre. While there are a couple decent songs, I don't think any of their recent work comes close to the old stuff, and I don't feel like I am someone who is stuck in the past, in fact I like many of the "80's" bands recent output over their older stuff. That being said, they (in a similar way, but exactly like KISS) have a very good business model behind them. They do their music, but the band and prominently Jon as the face of BJ are out there supporting worthy causes, involved in sports teams, etc...etc... They aren't one denominational, and they don't let people forget about them even during down periods for the band.

I've seen them a few times over the years beginning with the Crush tour, and I am not sure I've seen anyone put on a better show. Regardless to the reasons, whether you like the mellower musically direction, the way Jon sings now, or think they just phone in new albums, you have to admit they are the "Rolling Stones" of our generation of music, or at least one of the.. They can tour constantly or go away for a while and still be huge when they decide to come back round.

And, even though all may not like the present Bon Jovi music as much as the earlier Bon Jovi, they still are out there doing their thing, bringing in the crowds and changing up their music. They still give it all on their tours, even with Richie Sambora MIA on their last tour. This can't be said for some of that genre.
