I would rank the Hagar era albums in the following order:

1- For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
2- Balance
3- 5150
4- OU812

yeah it did rock, i also heard today that there is talk that sammy will be back in vh and they are talking about contracts, 1st i read this on a vh board that it came from a local radio station anf other posters said they heard that to.
so i called a station here in connecticut and they said they heard that talk a week ago, and also said it comes from mike anthony doing shows with sammy, but as far as they know eddie and alex have not said anything official yet, but the station said they think we may hear something soon.
i do hope this is true.

5150 has to be #1 cuz it has the "Roth" influence w/ Sam's killer vocals.
Balance..then F.U.C.K...then ou812...I think the writing on Balance was awesome!

5150 Time

Postby MrEd » Fri Sep 20, 2002 12:03 pm

I would agree with Joe318 totally: 5150, followed by F.U.C.K.

My order:
1- 5150
2- For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
3- Balance
4- OU812

Since EVH appeared on Sammy's solo album, we might need to consider that one in the poll.

2- 5150
3- Balance
4- OU812

5-Greatest Hits
6-? all DLR VH Albums

God this is hard, but I cannot believe people think Balance sucked - that album is absolute TOP NOTCH !!!!!!!

My order :

1- For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
2- 5150
3- Balance
4- OU812
These albums all have great songs, BUT OU812 has by far and away too many fillers on it.

I agree with a comment on the other DLR board that too many of the "Dave Era" albums have so many fillers on them. The quality of writing, the singing performances, and the talent increased when Sammy joined the band, but NO-ONE can touch Dave for stage presence !!!

With the exception of Van Halen "Van Halen", I dont think there is a Dave album where I dont hit fast forward at a few points, but I can listen to the Sam albums all day without doing that.

Now what about III ??? I demand a refund, and get the Trades Authorities onto this one - coz that sure as hell aint Van Halen baby !

I've got to agree.... I'm probably in the minority here, but Balance is probably my favorite overall VH disc (of all the eras - Roth, Van Hagar, and Cherone). Balucthitherium is one of my favorite guitar instrumentals of all time.....

My favourite is missing from the list...

Postby locobenno » Mon Sep 23, 2002 3:31 pm

But that's ok, I'll list it anyway:

1. Live: Right Here, Right Now
2. Balance
3. F.U.C.K.
4. 5150
5. OU812

I think I ordered them slightly different in a different thread yesterday, I've come to the conclusion that I liked F.U.C.K. better than 5150...I do go through phases though. At the moment I'm revisiting the Roth era and am getting blown away by, you guessed it, albums that most people didn't like ie Diver Down.

Also, as in a similar thread yesterday, I have to add that the band become a different beast live, I find myself enjoying the OU812 material a lot more. The OU812 material on the Ambulance tour was sensational, they even did "Mine All Mine", sounds much better with REAL drums! Similarly, the Balance material can lack, Aftershock falls a bit flat. On the other hand, Amsterdam and Big Fat Money come across much better live then they did in the studio. Interesting how it works out hey.

Cheers and beers

Half of 5150 was great because it was conceived as a Van HALEN album. But the other half, as well as the synth drums and lame production ruined it.

F.U.C.K. has the lowest overall cheese factor, and the best production of the 4 Van Hagar albums.

Van HALEN is Dave, Eddie, Mikey, Alex. Any Questions?

I actually thought Balance had the best production. FUCK sounded weird to me compared to the other Van HALEN/Van Hagar albums. I think overall, the songs are better on FUCK though.

I still say 5150 was the best because out of the 4 Van Hagar albums, it had the most Van HALEN in it. The song "5150" is Van Hagar's best in my opinion.
Van HALEN is Ed, Alex, Mike, and Dave. End of story.

Yeah, 5150 was one tune I was actually looking forward to hearing Hagar sing at the Gorge. Wasn't the same though, because Vic Johnson didn't even attempt that solo.

FORD, you were at the Gorge show too? Yeah, that sucked that 5150 wasn't included in the setlist. Being a Dave fan, whaddid you think of Dave's show vs. Sammy's? I have to say Sammy's show was better, but I prefer the classic Dave stuff still. I was surprised to hear Dave do DOA and Little Dreamer, and some of the more obscure stuff. But the show was an overall disappointment. Sammy could have left out When Eagles Fly and Dreams, but I liked Rock Candy from his old Montrose days. And no Summer Nights???

Sammy DID do 5150, or at least the first half of it, then he went into Poundcake. "Eagles Fly" killed the whole momentum of his set. And after starting his encore with a decent, heavy, almost grungelike rendition of "Heavy Metal", he had to ruin it with that fucking cheesefest "Dreams", which was only made worse by letting his Chedhead cheerleaders sing on stage with him. Aside from those two things, Sammy put on a better show than I expected.

But better than Dave? Not a chance in Hell. Dave had the better songs, the better band, and was singing better than he had in the last 20 years. All these sheep claiming his voice is "shot" obviously did not see this tour.

His screams aren't what they were 20 years ago, but neither are Robert Plant's. It happens to the best of us.

Postby essbee » Wed Oct 30, 2002 5:01 pm

I was at the Gorge show too...I thought both singers weren't so hot, but Sammy wailed a lot better than Dave. I saw Dave open for Bad Company in Spokane a few years ago and he was much better then......

It was no contest who was the better act on the DRLvs.Hagar tour.Sammy wins hands downs!I saw two shows on the tour and Sammy blew Roth off the stage.Unlike Roth,Hagar was having fun while Roth looked like was going through the motions.I loved BOTH eras of VH,but I must say that Roth CAN'T sing anymore. He really disappionted me.

Dave couldnt sing back in 1984 either, so what difference does that make?

My picks are as follows: 1 = 5150
2 = F.U.C.K
3 = Balance
4 = OU812
Personally, I preferred III over Balance and OU812, but thats just me 8)

What's the deal with OU812. So okay, it's not full of hit singles but it does go off! Anyway, I love it. The lists go on:

5150
OU812
F.U.C.K.
Balance.

Now come back and save the day Sam!
